Chapter 10: The Wedding That Never Happened

Marcus stared at the phone.

*Mom.*

His thumb hovered over the screen.

Aaliyah whispered, “Answer it.””

Marcus pressed accept.

For three seconds, there was only static.

Then a woman's voice came through.

“Marcus?””

His knees nearly gave out.

“Mom?””

Aaliyah covered her mouth.

Evelyn began sobbing.

Darius stepped closer.

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

His mother's voice was older than he remembered, but unmistakably hers.

“I'm sorry.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“You've been alive all these years.””

“Yes.””

“Why did Dad tell me you were dead?””

“He wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

A pause.

“From me.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

His mother breathed shakily.

“Your father discovered that I had found the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The money trail. The stolen accounts. The people behind it.””

Marcus looked at the folder on the table.

“Richard said you were investigating the company.””

“I was.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

“Because someone tried to kill me.””

Marcus's eyes moved toward Richard.

“Who?””

“I never saw their face.””

“Was it Evelyn?””

“No.””

“Was it Richard?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

His mother's voice became quieter.

“The person who ordered it was someone your father trusted more than anyone.””

Marcus stared at Aaliyah.

His mother's next words made his heart stop.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“No.””

“He didn't want me dead,” she said quickly.

“He wanted me hidden.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered the theft wasn't coming from outside his company.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“It was coming from inside.””

“Yes.””

“And Dad knew who was responsible.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

His mother hesitated.

Then she said, “Evelyn.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Evelyn sank into the chair.

“No…”

Marcus stared.

His mother continued.

“Evelyn didn't steal the money herself. She was being blackmailed.””

“By whom?””

“Her sister.””

Marcus froze.

“The woman in the photographs.””

“Yes.””

His mother's voice shook.

“She was alive. She had been using Evelyn's identity to move money through the company.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Evelyn was crying openly.

“Because your father made me promise.””

“What promise?””

“To keep Aaliyah safe.””

Marcus looked at Aaliyah.

His mother continued.

“Your father discovered that Aaliyah had accidentally seen the evidence when she was a child. He knew the people behind the theft would eventually come looking for her.””

Marcus remembered the photograph.

The little girl standing behind his parents.

“She was there.””

“Yes.””

“And she remembered?””

“Not at first.””

Aaliyah slowly spoke.

“I remembered the ring.””

Marcus turned toward her.

She touched the engagement ring on her finger.

“Your father gave it to me when I was eight.””

Marcus stared.

“My father gave you my mother's ring?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me someday you would need it.””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

All the lies suddenly had a different shape.

Aaliyah hadn't been planning to steal his money.

She had been using it to follow the trail.

The wedding wasn't a betrayal.

It had been a trap designed to expose whoever was watching.

Marcus looked at Darius.

“You knew.””

Darius shook his head.

“Not everything.””

“You knew enough.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father made me swear that I would only tell you when the evidence was complete.””

Marcus looked at the ring.

“How do we get it out?””

Aaliyah removed it.

She turned it over.

There was a tiny seam beneath the stone.

Marcus stared.

“The ring opens.””

Aaliyah nodded.

Darius took a small tool from his pocket.

With one careful movement, he loosened the setting.

A tiny memory card dropped into Marcus's palm.

Everyone stared at it.

Richard whispered, “That's it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew about the ring?””

“Yes.””

“Then you knew about the evidence.””

Richard's face changed.

“I knew there was evidence.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then why were you helping the people who were hunting my father?””

Richard looked stunned.

“I wasn't.””

“You ran from the house.””

“Because they were coming for me too.””

Marcus studied him.

Then his mother's voice came through the phone.

“Marcus.””

“I'm here.””

“Don't trust Richard.””

Marcus froze.

Richard looked toward the phone.

“Listen to me,” his mother said.

“Richard didn't betray your father.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Then who did?””

A woman's voice suddenly answered from behind him.

“I did.””

Marcus turned.

Evelyn stood holding a handgun.

Aaliyah screamed.

“Mom!””

Darius moved instantly.

“Put it down!””

Evelyn's hand shook.

“I never wanted this.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why?””

“Because they threatened Aaliyah.””

Aaliyah stepped forward.

“You're lying.””

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“I tried to protect you.””

“You stole Marcus's money.””

“I had no choice.””

“You lied about my father.””

“I had no choice!””

Her voice broke.

Then the front windows shattered.

Darius tackled Marcus to the floor.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Richard pulled Aaliyah behind the wall.

Evelyn dropped the weapon and screamed.

“Stop!””

The shooting stopped.

For several seconds, there was only ringing silence.

Then police sirens approached.

Marcus looked at Richard.

“How?””

Richard held up his phone.

“I sent the evidence to federal investigators.””

Marcus looked at the memory card.

“You had a copy?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father made sure I did.””

Evelyn collapsed into a chair.

Marcus walked toward her.

“Where is my father?””

She looked up through tears.

“He's at the venue.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because they forced him to go there.””

Marcus picked up his jacket.

“Then we're going.””

The wedding venue was twenty minutes away.

By the time Marcus arrived, police cars surrounded the building.

Darius ran inside first.

Marcus followed.

The ballroom looked exactly as it had during the final rehearsal.

White flowers.

Gold chairs.

A massive arch.

And at the end of the aisle stood an old man in a gray suit.

Marcus stopped.

His father turned.

For one moment, neither spoke.

Then his father smiled.

“Hey, son.””

Marcus crossed the room.

He grabbed him.

The hug broke something inside him.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me hate you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His father held him tightly.

“Because I would rather have you hate me than bury you.””

Marcus stepped back.

His father looked at Aaliyah.

“You did well.””

Aaliyah cried.

“I almost lost him.””

Her father shook his head.

“No. You saved him.””

Marcus looked around the ballroom.

“What happens now?””

His father glanced toward the doors.

“The truth.””

Police entered.

Evelyn was arrested.

Richard handed over the financial records.

Darius gave investigators the names of everyone who had helped conceal the operation.

And the memory card inside Aaliyah's ring contained everything they needed: recordings, bank transfers, photographs, and proof that the wedding had been engineered to expose the people hunting Marcus's family.

But there was one final surprise.

Weeks later, Marcus stood in an empty courtroom as the judge finalized the transfer of Willow Creek.

The property was not given to Evelyn.

Not to Aaliyah.

Not to Marcus.

His father had placed it in a trust for victims of financial crimes.

Marcus looked at Aaliyah.

“So the wedding is really over.””

She smiled through tears.

“It never started.””

He laughed.

“That's one expensive way to find out.””

Aaliyah looked down at her empty ring finger.

Marcus reached into his pocket.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Marcus…”

He pulled out a small velvet box.

“Before you panic, this isn't a wedding ring.””

She opened it.

Inside was a simple silver band.

His mother's.

Recovered from the evidence vault.

Aaliyah stared at it.

Marcus took her hand.

“This time, no contracts. No secrets. No money.””

She smiled.

“Just us?””

“Just us.””

Across the courtroom, his father watched quietly.

Marcus finally understood the truth.

The woman he thought had betrayed him had spent months trying to uncover the truth.

The mother he thought was protecting his family had nearly destroyed it.

The man he thought was an enemy had protected his father.

And the wedding he thought was the beginning of his life had actually been the trap that saved it.

Marcus looked at Aaliyah.

Then he smiled.

“Maybe we can try again.””

Aaliyah laughed.

“Without a thirty-thousand-dollar budget?””

“Definitely.””

She squeezed his hand.

“Good.””

Marcus glanced toward his father.

For the first time in years, the man smiled without fear.

And Marcus realized that some families are built on blood.

May you like

Others are built on secrets.

But the strongest ones are rebuilt after the truth finally comes out.
