Chapter 4: The Father Who Came Back
“Hello, Emily.””
Daniel Carter stood beneath the auditorium's entrance lights, holding his leather briefcase as though he had arrived for an ordinary business meeting.
Emily couldn't move.
For twelve years, she had imagined what she would say if she ever saw her father again.
She had rehearsed angry speeches in the shower. She had imagined throwing something at him. Sometimes, late at night, she had even imagined running into his arms.
But now that he was standing three feet away, all she could manage was silence.
Daniel looked older than the man in her childhood photographs. His hair was gray at the temples, his suit expensive, and his expression carefully arranged.
“Emily,” he repeated.
“You've grown up.””
Marcus muttered, “That's usually what happens when you abandon a child for twelve years.””
Daniel ignored him.
Jace stepped forward.
“You need to explain why you're here.””
Daniel adjusted his cuff.
“I came to congratulate my daughter.””
Emily finally found her voice.
“My graduation was last week when you last checked. You missed everything.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
“I understand you're upset.””
“Upset?””
Her voice cracked.
“You weren't there when Mom died. You weren't there when I got my first job. You weren't there when I won my scholarship. You weren't there when I had nobody to call.””
Daniel glanced at the surrounding bikers.
“This isn't the place for a family discussion.””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“You disappeared for twelve years, and now you're worried about the place?””
Jace placed a hand gently on her shoulder.
“Let him talk, sweetheart. But you don't owe him anything.””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
“I have something that belongs to you.””
He removed a thick envelope and extended it.
Emily didn't take it.
“What is it?””
“Documents. Your mother's estate papers. Some financial matters that were never properly settled.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“Funny. You show up after twelve years carrying paperwork.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Who are you?””
“Someone who knows what a father is supposed to do.””
A few bikers exchanged approving looks.
Daniel turned back to Emily.
“Your mother and I had an agreement. She wanted you protected from certain things. I respected that.””
Emily stared at him.
“Protected from what?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked directly at Jace.
“From people like him.””
Jace didn't react.
But Emily noticed the way his fingers curled.
“What does Jace have to do with my mother?””
Daniel closed the briefcase.
“More than you realize.””
They moved to a small conference room beside the school office.
The principal offered to call security, but Emily asked him to wait.
She wanted answers.
Daniel sat across from her.
Jace stood beside the door, with Marcus and two other bikers nearby.
Daniel placed several documents on the table.
“Your mother and I were married when you were born. But our marriage was complicated.””
Emily stared at him.
“Complicated? You left.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You made a decision.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Margaret was involved in something dangerous. She discovered that a group of people had been stealing money from a charitable foundation.””
Jace's expression changed.
“What foundation?””
Daniel ignored him.
“Your mother was working as an accountant. She found evidence of financial fraud. She wanted to report it.””
Emily shook her head.
“Mom worked at a hospital.””
“She worked there officially. But she also handled accounts for a private foundation.””
Daniel slid a document across the table.
Emily recognized her mother's signature.
At the bottom was the name of the organization.
The Carter Family Children's Foundation.
“What is this?”” Emily whispered.
“Your mother helped establish it. She believed every child deserved access to education and medical care, regardless of their family's income.””
Emily stared at the document.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she wanted you to have a normal childhood.””
Marcus snorted.
“Doesn't look like you gave her much of one.””
Daniel continued.
“After Margaret discovered the financial irregularities, she began receiving threats. I panicked. I thought leaving would keep you both safe.””
Emily's eyes filled.
“So you abandoned us to protect us?””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice!””
Her voice echoed through the room.
Jace finally spoke.
“That's enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You don't know what happened back then.””
“Then explain it.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Sixteen years ago, Margaret was driving home from the hospital with Emily. A truck struck her vehicle.””
Emily felt the room tilt.
She had heard about the accident before.
Her mother had survived, but suffered injuries that required months of recovery.
“That's why she had that scar on her shoulder,” Emily whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“She was never the same afterward.””
Jace pulled the old photograph from his pocket.
“Then explain why I was at that hospital.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You were working with the foundation.””
Jace looked at Emily.
“I was a volunteer coordinator. Your mother was helping us organize emergency housing for families.””
Emily looked between them.
“So you knew my mom?””
“Very well,” Jace replied.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't know who you were until recently.””
Daniel suddenly stood.
“This conversation is over.””
He gathered the papers.
But Emily caught one page before he could take it.
It was a bank statement.
A large account balance appeared at the bottom.
Her name was printed above it.
Emily Carter.
“What is this?””
Daniel froze.
“That account was established for your education.””
“How much money?””
He didn't answer.
Emily looked again.
Her hands began shaking.
There was more money in that account than she could have earned in a lifetime of working two jobs.
“Why was I working at the grocery store?”” she whispered.
“Why was I cleaning offices before school?””
Daniel looked away.
“I managed the account.””
“You managed it?””
“Your mother appointed me.””
Jace stepped closer.
“Daniel, where did the money go?””
Daniel closed his briefcase.
“That's none of your business.””
Marcus stood up.
“Actually, if the account belongs to this young woman, it sounds very much like her business.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
Emily stood.
“Dad!””
He stopped.
She had never called him that before.
Not since she was four.
For one brief moment, something softened in his face.
Then she asked the question that destroyed it.
“Did you steal my mother's money?””
Daniel turned.
His eyes were cold.
“You have no idea what you're asking.””
He walked out.
Emily remained standing, holding the bank statement.
Jace looked at the paper.
Then he noticed something.
A transfer date.
The money had been moved only six weeks earlier.
And the recipient wasn't Daniel.
It was an account belonging to a company called Northstar Holdings.
Jace recognized the name immediately.
It was the company that owned the delivery truck involved in his accident.
He looked at Marcus.
“Call our attorney.””
Marcus nodded.
“Already thinking about it.””
But before Jace could explain, Emily's phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent her a photograph.
It showed her mother standing outside a hospital with a baby in her arms.
Underneath it were seven words.
Your father isn't the person you should fear.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
Ask Jace what happened that night.
