Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Die
For three seconds, I couldn't move.
Daniel Mercer lay beside the workbench, one hand pressed against his chest, his blood spreading across the concrete floor. The tiny device he'd shoved into my palm blinked red in the darkness.
Then someone shouted from the loading bay.
“Check the body! Reed wants confirmation!””
I dropped beside Daniel.
“Stay with me,” I whispered.
“You don't get to disappear twice.””
His eyes fluttered.
“James…”
“Save your breath. Help is coming.””
He caught my wrist.
“Vanessa… the recording…”
“I'll find it.””
“No.”” His grip weakened.
“She came back for you.””
A flashlight beam swept across the warehouse.
I dragged Daniel behind the workbench and grabbed a folded tarp from a nearby shelf. It wasn't enough to conceal him completely, but it broke the outline of his body from the entrance.
Footsteps approached.
“Where is he?”” a man demanded.
Another voice answered, “He was here a second ago.””
I slipped behind a row of parked vans, keeping the device in my fist. My phone had no signal, and the gunshot still rang in my ears.
Two men moved through the aisle.
One carried a flashlight. The other held a pistol pointed toward the floor.
“Mr. Reed said Carter was alone,” the first man muttered.
“He also said Mercer was finished.””
“What if he's not?””
“Then make sure he is.””
I waited until they separated.
The man with the flashlight moved toward the loading bay. His partner headed for the workbench.
I ran.
My shoulder struck a metal shelf, sending tools clattering to the floor. Both men turned.
“There!””
I sprinted between the vans, vaulted a low barrier, and reached a side door. It was locked.
Behind me, the footsteps accelerated.
I slammed my shoulder against the door once.
Twice.
On the third attempt, the latch broke.
Cold air hit my face as I stumbled into an alley behind the warehouse. Marcus's vehicle stood across the road, headlights blazing.
He had heard the gunshot.
“James!””
He ran toward me.
“Daniel's inside,” I shouted.
“He's been shot. Call an ambulance and the police.””
Marcus grabbed my arm and pulled me behind his vehicle as another shot struck the metal gate.
“Get down!””
He drew his weapon and shouted toward the warehouse.
“Police are on their way! Drop your weapons!””
I heard the men retreating.
Marcus kept his attention on the entrance while I called emergency services. Within minutes, sirens approached from the main road.
The two gunmen escaped through the rear fence before officers could secure the building.
Daniel was alive when the paramedics reached him.
They loaded him into an ambulance, and I climbed in beside him after Marcus spoke to the attending officer.
As the doors closed, Daniel opened his eyes.
“Did you get it?”” he whispered.
I showed him the black device.
His expression changed.
“Good.””
“What is this?””
“An encrypted storage key. The archive is on the server. This unlocks it.””
“Why didn't you just give me the files?””
“Because Richard has people inside the systems that matter. He can erase a digital trail before anyone knows it existed.””
The paramedic adjusted Daniel's oxygen mask.
“Sir, please stop talking.””
Daniel ignored him.
“The final attachment, James. It's the only thing Richard can't explain away.””
“What does it contain?””
He looked at me.
“Proof that Vanessa was supposed to die in the fire.””
His eyes closed again.
The paramedic checked his pulse and ordered the driver to move.
I sat beside Daniel, staring at the blood on my hands.
Vanessa had helped Richard access my garage. She had known about the insurance documents. She had married the man who apparently planned to eliminate her.
And ten years later, she had approached me at a charity gala, knowing I was wealthy enough to investigate him.
I couldn't decide whether she was a victim, an accomplice, or someone who had spent a decade waiting for the right opportunity to save herself.
At the hospital, doctors rushed Daniel into surgery.
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later with two detectives.
Detective Elena Ruiz introduced herself, a compact woman in her forties with tired eyes and a voice that suggested she had little patience for wealthy men who expected special treatment.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.””
I gave her the sequence of events, from the anonymous photograph to the meeting at the warehouse. I told her about the gunmen, the shooting, and the encrypted device.
When I mentioned Richard Reed, her expression sharpened.
“We've received complaints involving the Reed Foundation before,” she said.
“Nothing that established a criminal offense. Mr. Reed has influential friends.””
“He also has five million dollars missing from a charity program.””
“We'll investigate the financial allegations. But the shooting is our immediate concern.””
“Can you protect Daniel?””
“If he survives surgery, we'll arrange security.””
“And Vanessa?””
Detective Ruiz paused.
“Why Vanessa?””
“Because she gave me the evidence that led to the warehouse. And because Daniel says Richard intended to kill her eleven years ago.””
Ruiz wrote something in her notebook.
“Do you have evidence supporting that claim?””
“Not yet.””
“Then don't confront her. If she's involved, you could compromise the investigation. If she's in danger, you could make it worse.””
I knew she was right.
I also knew I couldn't leave Vanessa to Richard.
At 2:18 a.m., my phone rang.
Her name appeared on the screen.
I answered.
“James?””
Her voice trembled.
“Where are you?””
“Hospital.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel was shot.””
She made a small, strangled sound.
“Is he alive?””
“Doctors are operating.””
“Did he tell you anything?””
I looked at Detective Ruiz, who was watching me closely.
“He told me you were supposed to die in the fire.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa began to cry.
“I wondered when you'd find out.””
The words chilled me.
“You knew?””
“I knew Richard wanted me dead. I didn't know Daniel had survived until recently.””
“Why would Richard want to kill you?””
“Because I knew what he had done. Because I had copies of the original records. And because I was supposed to be the person who signed the final insurance documents.””
I gripped the phone.
“You helped him get into my garage.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was trying to destroy evidence.””
“Yes.””
“Did you know he was going to set the fire?””
“No.”” Her voice broke.
“James, I swear to you, I didn't know until the flames started.””
“Then why did you help him?””
“Because he told me you'd signed a deal that would destroy everything we had built together. He said you were planning to leave me with the debts while you escaped with the money.””
I stared at the hospital wall.
“That was a lie.””
“I know that now.””
“You could have asked me.””
“I was twenty-five and terrified. Richard had shown me documents with your signature. Daniel told me you were hiding money. I believed them.””
“And after the fire?””
“I realized they'd used me. I tried to withdraw, but Richard threatened to send the police everything he had on me.””
“So you left me.””
“Yes.””
She didn't offer an excuse.
“I thought if I disappeared, he'd leave me alone. Then he found me again years later. He told me Daniel was dead and that the only way to protect myself was to marry him.””
“You married the man who tried to kill you?””
“I married the man who convinced me he was the only person who could keep me safe.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had imagined Vanessa leaving because I wasn't rich enough. It had been easier to believe she was shallow than to wonder whether I had missed something more complicated.
But her fear didn't erase her choices.
“You humiliated me tonight,” I said.
“You stood in front of a room full of people and made me feel like the man you abandoned.””
“I know.””
“Was that part of the plan?””
“No.”” She inhaled shakily.
“I was angry. When you walked into that ballroom, I saw the life I could have had if I'd trusted you instead of Richard. I wanted to hurt you before you could make me feel ashamed.””
The honesty was brutal.
I had no response.
Then Vanessa whispered, “James, Richard knows I gave you the documents. He's coming for me.””
“Where are you?””
“At the hotel.””
“Leave your room. Go somewhere public. Don't get into a vehicle with anyone you don't know.””
“I can't. His security team is downstairs.””
I stood.
“Call the police.””
“I did. They said someone would come, but I can hear people outside my door.””
Detective Ruiz moved closer and held out her hand for the phone.
I put it on speaker.
“Vanessa Reed?”” she asked.
“This is Detective Elena Ruiz. I need you to remain in your room and keep the door locked. Officers are being dispatched.””
A crash sounded through the phone.
Vanessa screamed.
Then a man's voice said, “Mrs. Reed, your husband wants you home.””
The call ended.
Detective Ruiz immediately radioed for units at the hotel.
I stared at the dark screen.
The woman who had once walked away from me without looking back was now trapped in a room with the man who had built his fortune on secrets.
And somewhere on an encrypted server was the recording that might explain why he had wanted her dead.
If Vanessa had survived the fire by betraying me, perhaps she had spent the last decade trying to undo what she'd done.
May you like
But I couldn't know that until I saw the final attachment.
And I had a feeling Richard would burn down everything left of his empire before he let me open it.
