Chapter 9: The Last Lie

Marcus hit the concrete floor as the gunshot echoed through the warehouse.

For a moment, all he could hear was the ringing in his ears.

Then someone screamed.

“DANIEL!””

Vanessa.

Emergency lights flickered red along the walls. Marcus scrambled to his feet and found his brother crouched behind a forklift, one hand pressed against his shoulder.

Blood seeped between his fingers.

Marcus dropped beside him.

“Let me see.””

“I'm fine,” Daniel grunted.

“You're bleeding!””

“I said I'm fine!””

Another shot struck the metal frame above them.

Marcus ducked instinctively.

Daniel grabbed the front of his jacket.

“Listen to me. There's a maintenance tunnel behind the loading platform. It leads to the drainage road. Take Vanessa and get out.””

“I'm not leaving you.””

“You have to.””

“No.””

Daniel's eyes blazed.

“For six years, I've been trying to keep you out of this. Don't make me waste that effort now.””

Marcus stared at his brother.

Then Vanessa appeared beside them, clutching a small metal object.

“The drive,” she whispered.

Marcus looked at her hand.

It was a compact encrypted storage device.

“Where did you get that?””

“Daniel gave it to me before Bell arrived.””

Daniel grimaced.

“Vanessa, I told you to keep it hidden.””

“I did!””

She looked at Marcus.

“It's got the original records. The transfers, the emails, the authorization files. Everything.””

Marcus took the drive and shoved it into his pocket.

A man's voice rang out through the darkness.

“Mr. Williams! You have thirty seconds to come out!””

Bell.

Daniel pushed Marcus toward the loading platform.

“Go!””

Marcus grabbed his brother's uninjured arm.

“We're leaving together.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Marcus, I can't run fast enough, and neither can you if you keep arguing.””

Vanessa looked toward the far wall.

“There!””

A narrow metal door stood partly hidden behind a stack of wooden pallets. Daniel had already pulled the first pallet aside, revealing a dark opening beneath the platform.

Marcus helped his brother stand.

Daniel nearly collapsed.

“Damn it,” Marcus muttered.

“Put your arm around me.””

They moved toward the opening as footsteps approached from the opposite side of the warehouse.

Vanessa went first, lowering herself into the tunnel. Marcus supported Daniel as they descended a short metal ladder.

The air below smelled of damp earth and rust. Water trickled along a concrete channel, and a narrow maintenance walkway led toward a faint patch of light.

Behind them, Bell shouted.

“Find them!””

A door slammed.

Then the footsteps grew louder.

Marcus half-carried Daniel through the tunnel while Vanessa hurried ahead. Every few steps, Daniel's breathing became more labored.

“Stay with me,” Marcus said.

Daniel managed a weak laugh.

“You sound like Dad.””

“Don't you dare make jokes right now.””

“It's a family tradition.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

For a few seconds, the brothers were young again, sneaking through the warehouse after their father had forbidden them from playing there.

Then Daniel stumbled.

Marcus caught him before he hit the ground.

“Daniel!””

His brother's face had gone gray.

“The exit,” Daniel whispered.

“Keep going.””

They reached a rusted service gate. Vanessa pushed against it, but it wouldn't move.

“It's locked!””

Marcus set Daniel down carefully and examined the mechanism. A thick chain held the gate shut from the other side.

He searched his pockets.

Nothing useful.

Behind them, a flashlight beam swept across the tunnel wall.

“Marcus,” Daniel whispered, “leave me.””

Marcus turned on him.

“Say that again, and I'll drag you through this gate myself.””

He grabbed a loose length of metal pipe from beside the wall and swung it against the chain.

The first strike barely dented it.

The second made the chain rattle.

The third snapped the rusted fastening.

The gate swung open.

Cold night air rushed over them.

They emerged beside a drainage road several hundred yards from the warehouse. Marcus could see headlights approaching from the main street.

A dark SUV pulled to the curb.

For one terrifying second, he thought Bell had found them.

Then the driver's door opened.

Johnson stepped out, followed by two uniformed police officers.

“Marcus!””

Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.

“How did you find us?””

“Your location sharing was still active on the phone you gave me. When you stopped responding, I contacted the police and came to the last known location.””

One officer immediately called for an ambulance.

The other moved toward the warehouse with his hand near his radio.

Johnson looked at Daniel's bleeding shoulder.

“Is he conscious?””

“Barely.””

“Stay with him. The ambulance is coming.””

Marcus knelt beside his brother.

Daniel's eyes fluttered.

“Did you keep the drive?””

Marcus patted his pocket.

“Right here.””

“Good.””

“Don't talk.””

Daniel grabbed his wrist.

“There's something you need to know about the drive.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What?””

“It has two folders. The first contains the financial records. The second contains a recording.””

“Of what?””

Daniel swallowed painfully.

“Dad. Three days before the surgery.””

Marcus froze.

“What did he say?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“He admitted he knew Bell was moving the money. He said he'd signed the original transfers because Bell threatened to expose a mistake he'd made years earlier.””

Marcus stared at him.

“What mistake?””

Daniel's lips trembled.

“He used money from the trust to cover a failed investment. He thought he could replace it before anyone noticed. Bell found out and used it to control him.””

Marcus felt the world tilt.

Their father hadn't been entirely innocent.

He'd made a terrible decision, trusted the wrong person, and spent years trying to hide the consequences.

But that still didn't explain the forged documents, the false death, or the missing millions.

“What else is on the recording?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Dad names the person who helped Bell create the false estate documents.””

“Who?””

Daniel opened his eyes again.

“Marcus, it wasn't Vanessa.””

Before Marcus could ask another question, the ambulance arrived.

Paramedics took over, placing Daniel on a stretcher and preparing him for transport. Marcus climbed into the ambulance beside him while Vanessa followed in Johnson's car.

At the hospital, surgeons took Daniel into emergency treatment.

Marcus sat in the waiting room with blood on his cuffs and the encrypted drive in his pocket. Vanessa sat several chairs away, her hands clasped tightly together.

For the first time in seven years, they had nothing to say to each other.

Johnson arrived with a laptop.

“We've secured the digital evidence,” he said.

“The police have entered the warehouse and detained Bell pending questioning. His associates are being identified.””

Marcus nodded.

“Have you opened the files?””

“Not yet. The drive is encrypted, and we need a forensic specialist to preserve the data properly.””

“Do whatever it takes.””

Johnson sat beside him.

“There's something else. The officers found a vehicle registered to a company associated with Bell. Inside was a folder containing copies of the original trust documents.””

Marcus looked up.

“Anything about Dad?””

“Several medical records. We're verifying them. But one document indicates that Richard was transferred to a private care facility under an alias. It appears he may have been moved again recently.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“So Bell was telling the truth about knowing where Dad was.””

“Possibly. But we still need to establish where he is now.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“There's a way to find him.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Why didn't you say that earlier?””

“Because I was afraid Bell would find out.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small folded piece of paper.

“Daniel gave me this address last year. He said it was the last place he knew your father had stayed.””

Marcus took it.

The address belonged to a private residential facility outside Savannah.

Johnson checked it immediately.

“We'll contact the facility through the proper channels.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Why did Daniel give you this?””

“He wanted me to tell you if anything happened to him.””

“And you didn't.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Bell told me that if I contacted you, he'd make sure Ethan disappeared. He showed me photographs of the school, the house, the people who picked him up. He knew everything.””

Marcus looked down at the paper.

“Did you tell Derek?””

“Yes. Derek helped me investigate Bell. But then he started taking money, and I realized he was hiding things from me, too.””

“Did you know he was sleeping with you to keep you quiet?””

Vanessa flinched.

“I don't know what Derek wanted anymore.””

Marcus stood.

“Neither do I.””

He walked to the window.

Outside, the sky was beginning to lighten. He had been awake for nearly twenty-four hours, and every new fact seemed to erase another part of the life he'd thought he knew.

His father had survived.

His brother had returned.

His wife had lied.

And the man responsible for much of the deception was now in police custody.

It should have felt like victory.

Instead, Marcus felt only exhaustion.

At 5:18 a.m., Johnson's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, then looked at Marcus.

“The facility confirmed a patient matching your father's description was admitted under the name Robert Harris. But he was discharged two days ago.””

Marcus's stomach dropped.

“Where did he go?””

“The discharge papers list a private address. The person who signed him out was identified as a family representative.””

“Who?””

Johnson checked the record.

Then he looked up slowly.

“Ethan Williams.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Daniel's son?””

“Yes.””

“But Ethan is five years old!””

“According to the records, the person who signed the discharge papers was an adult using that name.””

Marcus took the document.

The signature was elegant and deliberate.

Beneath it was a telephone number.

Marcus called immediately.

The line rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I'm looking for Ethan Williams.””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Marcus Williams. I'm Daniel's brother.””

Silence.

Then the woman said, “I've been expecting your call.””

“Who are you?””

“My name is Emily.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

Emily.

Daniel's wife.

The woman everyone had believed was dead.

“Where is my father?”” he demanded.

“Your father is safe for now.””

“Where?””

“Before I tell you, you need to know the truth about the man you've been calling your father.””

Marcus went cold.

“What does that mean?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“The man who died six years ago was not Richard Williams.””

Marcus couldn't move.

She continued, her voice barely above a whisper.

“And the man currently hiding under the name Robert Harris isn't the only person who's been living under a false identity.””

Marcus looked at Johnson.

Then at Vanessa.

Then down at the paper in his hand.

May you like

Emily spoke again.

“Marcus, the man who raised you wasn't your biological father.””
