Chapter 4: The Man Behind The Curtain

I stared at the photograph until the pixels blurred.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

And Richard Hale.

My father’s former business partner.

The man who disappeared six years ago after my father’s sudden death.

The man everyone believed had walked away with nothing.

Except apparently, he hadn’t.

I forwarded the image to Claire immediately.

Her response came within minutes.

*Do not contact anyone. Do not warn Daniel. I’m looking into this now.*

That was the problem with secrets.

Once you knew one existed, every shadow started looking suspicious.

I drove home that night with my hands locked around the steering wheel.

The old version of me would have been crying.

Begging.

Asking Daniel why.

But that woman was gone.

The woman sitting behind the wheel was a mother.

And mothers learn something quickly.

When someone threatens their child, fear becomes fuel.

The next morning, Daniel showed up at my house again.

Except this time, he wasn’t arrogant.

He wasn’t holding divorce papers.

He wasn’t walking beside Vanessa.

He looked exhausted.

Like he hadn’t slept.

I opened the door but didn’t invite him inside.

"What do you want?""

His eyes moved past me toward the nursery.

For a second, guilt crossed his face.

Real guilt.

Then it disappeared.

"Mara, I need to explain.""

I almost smiled.

"Explain what part?""

He swallowed.

"Everything.""

I crossed my arms.

"You had months to explain.""

"I made mistakes.""

"Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.""

My voice lowered.

"You didn't make a mistake, Daniel. You made choices.""

He looked away.

That was the first time I saw him unable to defend himself.

"I never wanted things to go this far.""

"Really?""

He looked back at me.

"Yes.""

I laughed quietly.

"You brought another woman into my home three months after I gave birth.""

His jaw tightened.

"I thought I was in love.""

There it was.

The sentence he needed to say.

The sentence he thought would make everything make sense.

I nodded slowly.

"Then why are you here?""

He hesitated.

Because he didn’t want to say the truth.

Because men like Daniel always wanted honesty only when it benefited them.

Finally, he whispered:

"Because Vanessa lied to me.""

The words hung in the air.

I studied his face.

"You’re blaming her?""

"No.""

He ran a hand through his hair.

"I’m saying I didn't know everything.""

"What didn't you know?""

He looked at the floor.

"She knew about the trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"I don't know.""

"Try again.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I found documents in my office.""

"What documents?""

"Documents about your father’s estate.""

I stayed silent.

He continued.

"Vanessa told me she could help me understand the structure. She said she had connections.""

I stared at him.

"She was never trying to help you.""

His silence answered me.

Claire was right.

This was bigger than an affair.

Daniel stepped closer.

"I think she used me.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

His eyes lifted.

"You used each other.""

That hurt him.

Good.

Because I needed him to feel one small piece of what I felt.

"You thought I was an obstacle," I said.

"She thought I was an obstacle. The difference is, you both forgot one thing.""

"What?""

"I was the person standing between you and everything you wanted.""

His face went pale.

A phone rang inside his pocket.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Who is it?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"It's my lawyer.""

"Why?""

He hesitated.

Then answered.

"Hello?""

I watched his face change with every word.

The color drained from him.

"What do you mean frozen?""

Frozen.

The same word from Claire’s email.

Daniel turned away.

"No, you don't understand. Those accounts aren't connected to—"

He stopped.

His eyes found mine.

And I knew.

He finally understood.

The life he thought he controlled had never belonged to him.

When he ended the call, he looked smaller.

"What did you do?""

I almost laughed.

"I didn't do anything.""

"You froze everything.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I protected what was mine.""

His phone buzzed again.

This time, he looked terrified before he even answered.

"Daniel?""

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Vanessa.

Even from a distance, I could hear the panic.

"Why are they saying the company accounts are locked?""

Daniel looked at me.

Then away.

"Vanessa...""

"What happened?""

His voice was quiet.

"Mara knows.""

The silence on the other end was immediate.

Then Vanessa said something that made Daniel’s entire body freeze.

Something I wasn't supposed to hear.

Something that changed everything.

"Then you need to tell her the truth about her father before she finds out herself.""

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time in years, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Because whatever happened six years ago...

May you like

It involved my father.

And Daniel had been hiding it.
