Chapter 5: The Girl Who Had Been Told What to Say

I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Laura's handwriting, Vanessa's frightened expression, and Ethan standing on the staircase with the face of a child who had suddenly realized that the adults around him might not be who he thought they were.
At six in the morning, I found him sitting at the kitchen table, staring into a bowl of untouched cereal.
“Couldn't sleep?”” I asked.
He shook his head.
I poured coffee and sat opposite him.
“Tell me exactly what you saw Chloe doing in my study.””
Ethan rubbed his eyes.
“It was about two weeks ago. I came downstairs because I couldn't find my headphones. Chloe was standing near your desk.””
“Was she looking through the drawers?””
“I think so. When she heard me, she jumped and said she was looking for a charger.””
“Did you believe her?””
“Not really. We keep chargers in the kitchen drawer. I told her that.””
He picked up his spoon and put it down again.
“She got angry and said I was following her around. I told her I had just come downstairs.””
I listened carefully.
“What happened next?””
“She said she was going to tell Mom I made her uncomfortable. I thought she was joking.””
My jaw tightened.
“Did she say anything else?””
Ethan stared at the table.
“She said Mom had told her you were planning to give her something important, but you kept changing your mind because of me.””
I felt the familiar pressure building in my chest.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because it sounded stupid.”” He swallowed.
“And because I didn't want you to think I was trying to get Chloe in trouble.””
I reached across the table.
“You don't have to protect me from the truth, son.””
He nodded.
Then he asked, “What is Mom's original will?””
I took a moment before answering.
“It's a legal document explaining what happens to certain things if one of us dies. Your mother and I made arrangements to protect you when you were young. But your attorney and I need to check the original documents before we know whether anything is missing.””
“Could Chloe have taken it?””
“I don't know.””
“Would Mom have wanted me to share the house with her?””
I looked at him.
“Your mother wanted you to grow up feeling secure. She also believed in being generous. Those things aren't opposites.””
He nodded slowly.
I was about to suggest he get ready for school when my phone rang.
Marcus.
“Daniel, I've reviewed the documents you sent,” he said.
“I need you to bring the original estate folder to my office as soon as possible.””
“Did you find something?””
“The copy of Laura's will appears complete, but the attachment referencing a separate declaration is missing from the set Vanessa supplied to the title company.””
“Could she have removed it?””
“Possibly. We can't establish that yet. I need to compare the original documents and find out precisely what the title company received.””
I glanced toward the study.
“Ethan says Chloe was searching my desk for the original will.””
Marcus fell silent.
Then he said, “Don't confront either of them about that until we understand the timeline. Preserve everything. And Daniel, if you believe a document has been taken, don't search anyone's personal belongings or make threats. Let us handle it properly.””
“I understand.””
After the call, I secured the estate folder in a locked drawer and took Ethan to school.
He climbed out of the car without looking back.
Before he shut the door, he hesitated.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“If Chloe tells everyone I did something wrong, will they believe her?””
The question hurt because I knew he wasn't asking about the law.
He was asking whether he would still have a family if somebody accused him of being the kind of person he wasn't.
I reached over and squeezed his shoulder.
“I will listen to the facts. I will protect you from unfair treatment. And I won't let anybody force you to confess to something you didn't do.””
He nodded and got out.
That afternoon, I met Marcus at his office.
He had arranged the paperwork across a conference table. Beside the property documents lay the estate folder, a copy of Laura's will, and a printed timeline of Vanessa's communications with Richard.
“The good news,” Marcus said, “is that the title company hasn't completed any transfer. Your ownership remains unchanged according to the records we've reviewed.””
I let out a breath.
“And the bad news?””
“The proposed transfer was prepared using information that appears to have come from your personal records. We need to establish how those records were accessed and whether the signature was knowingly falsified. Until then, we should describe the issue as a suspected unauthorized transaction, not a proven crime.””
I nodded.
He slid another paper toward me.
“This is a request for additional documents sent to Richard three weeks ago.””
The request listed my property deed, estate plan, and a copy of Laura's original will.
At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.
My stomach twisted.
“Why would she need the original will?””
“To evaluate the proposed arrangement, she claimed. But a property consultant would ordinarily have no reason to obtain the original of a private estate document merely to discuss a potential trust.””
I leaned back.
“Can I report this?””
“You can report your concerns and provide the evidence. We should also notify the title company in writing that you dispute the signature and do not authorize the transfer. I'll prepare the necessary notices.””
Marcus paused.
“There is one more thing. Richard sent me an email this morning. He says Vanessa asked him to destroy an earlier draft of the trust agreement.””
“Did he?””
“He says he retained a copy because he was uncomfortable with the changes.””
I stared at the papers.
“What changes?””
Marcus turned his laptop toward me.
The first draft named me as trustee and preserved my control over the property. A later version removed me from that role and named Vanessa as the person responsible for managing the proposed trust.
The beneficiary remained Chloe.
And a clause had been added stating that Ethan's continued occupancy could be reviewed if his presence created a “substantial domestic conflict.””
I read it twice.
“So the accusation about Ethan wasn't random.””
“It may have been intended to support a claim that his presence was incompatible with the proposed arrangement. We need more evidence before drawing a firm conclusion.””
I stood and walked to the window.
For eleven months, Vanessa had been telling me that a blended family required compromise. She had asked me to make room for Chloe, and I had gladly done so.
I had bought her school supplies, taken her to the dentist, and helped her prepare for exams. I had even offered to pay for a summer art program because she loved painting.
I had never treated her as less important because she wasn't my biological daughter.
But Vanessa seemed to have interpreted every kindness as an opportunity to secure something more.
“Marcus,” I said, “I want the transfer stopped, and I want my son left alone. I don't want to destroy Chloe's life.””
“That's reasonable. We can pursue the property issue without making her responsible for her mother's decisions.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A girl's voice whispered, “Mr. Hale? It's Chloe.””
I moved away from Marcus's desk.
“Chloe, are you all right?””
“No. I mean, yes. I'm physically okay.””
Her voice shook.
“Where are you?””
“At my dad's apartment.””
Her biological father, Michael, lived about forty minutes away. He and Vanessa had been divorced for years, and their relationship was tense enough that Chloe rarely visited him without a disagreement.
“Is your mother there?””
“No. She went out. She said she had to fix something before you talked to your lawyer again.””
I closed my eyes.
“Chloe, I need you to tell me something honestly. Did your mother ask you to look for Laura's will?””
Silence.
Then a quiet sob.
“Yes.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did she tell you?””
“She said it was important. She said your lawyer was hiding something that belonged to me, and she needed the original document so she could prove you had promised me the house.””
“Did she tell you to accuse Ethan of staring at you?””
Chloe began crying harder.
“She said if I told you I felt uncomfortable, you'd finally understand how serious it was. She said you would send him to live with someone else, and then everything would be easier.””
I felt sick.
“Did you actually feel unsafe around Ethan?””
“No,” she whispered.
“Not like that.””
I said nothing, giving her time to continue.
“He annoyed me sometimes. He wouldn't let me change the television channel, and once he told me to stop using his headphones without asking. But he never touched me or threatened me. Mom said I should describe the staring because nobody could prove what happened inside my head.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Chloe, you understand that what you said could have seriously hurt him?””
“I know.””
“Why did you do it?””
“Because Mom said if I didn't help, we'd lose everything. She said you would choose Ethan anyway, and we'd end up with nowhere to go.””
I leaned against the wall.
“That's not your responsibility.””
“I know that now.””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“There's something else, Mr. Hale.””
“What?””
“I found the original will.””
My heart stopped.
“Where is it?””
“In Mom's handbag. She took it out of your study before we left. She said it had something inside that would make you give up the house.””
I looked at Marcus.
He had heard enough to understand that the situation had changed again.
“Chloe,” I said carefully, “don't touch the document. Don't take anything from your mother's belongings. Can you tell your father what you've told me and ask him to help you speak to a lawyer if necessary?””
“I don't want Mom to get arrested.””
“I can't promise what the consequences will be. But telling the truth is the right thing to do.””
She sniffed.
“Will Ethan forgive me?””
I thought of my son sitting at the kitchen table, afraid that the world would believe the worst about him.
“That's something you'll have to ask him. He has a right to be hurt.””
“I understand.””
After we ended the call, Marcus immediately began documenting what Chloe had said.
I sat down heavily.
The accusation against Ethan had not been a misunderstanding.
It had been a story encouraged by his stepmother and repeated by her daughter.
But one question remained.
What had Vanessa believed she would find in Laura's original will that could make me surrender my home?
Before I could ask Marcus, another message arrived from Chloe.
It contained a photograph.
The image showed a page from Laura's will, with one paragraph circled in red.
