Chapter 2: The Bill That Changed Everything

Inside the restaurant, Margaret Whitmore was having the best evening of her life.

At least, she thought she was.

She sat at the head of the enormous walnut dining table, admiring the floral arrangements and the crystal chandeliers.

The guests had begun eating their second course.

A violinist played softly near the entrance.

And Daniel was sitting beside Victoria Hayes, his former girlfriend.

Victoria wore a fitted red dress and a diamond necklace Margaret had admired earlier.

"She's lovely, isn't she?"" Margaret whispered to her sister, Patricia.

Patricia glanced toward Victoria.

"Very pretty. But what happened to Emily?""

Margaret waved dismissively.

"Emily had another one of her little emotional episodes.""

"She left?""

"She was asked to leave.""

Patricia raised an eyebrow.

"By whom?""

Margaret took a sip of champagne.

"Does it matter? This is a family celebration, and she clearly wasn't suited to the occasion.""

Daniel heard the conversation.

"Mom, please don't start again.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Oh, don't be sensitive. Victoria has been much more pleasant company tonight.""

Victoria smiled politely.

"Margaret, you shouldn't say that. Emily is still Daniel's wife.""

Margaret reached over and squeezed her hand.

"You're too kind, darling.""

Daniel looked down at his plate.

He knew exactly what his mother was doing.

But he also knew that Victoria's presence had been part of the plan.

Three weeks earlier, Margaret had called him into her house and told him she had a proposal.

"Emily isn't right for you," she had said.

Daniel had sighed.

"Mom, we've discussed this.""

"Then let's discuss it again. She has money, Daniel. She has a successful company. But does she have the right background?""

"She runs a marketing agency.""

"Exactly. A little business she built on social media contracts and internet advertising. That's not the same as being part of an established family.""

Daniel hadn't answered.

Margaret continued.

"Victoria understands our world. Her father owns half the commercial properties downtown. Imagine what that could mean for your future.""

"Mom, I'm married.""

Margaret leaned forward.

"Marriage is not a prison, darling.""

That conversation had ended with Daniel promising to think about it.

And now Victoria was sitting beside him at the dinner Emily had paid for.

Margaret considered the evening a brilliant first step.

She had even arranged for the photographer to capture Daniel and Victoria together.

"Smile, darling," she told them.

The photographer raised his camera.

Daniel forced a smile.

Just then, a waiter approached the head of the table.

He was carrying a leather folder.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Whitmore?""

Margaret turned.

"Yes?""

The waiter, whose name badge read Thomas, leaned slightly toward her.

"There's a problem with tonight's payment.""

Margaret's smile disappeared.

"What problem?""

Thomas opened the folder.

"The woman who booked this dinner removed her payment authorization before leaving.""

Margaret blinked.

"What?""

"The account holder canceled the remaining payment authorization approximately fifteen minutes ago.""

Margaret laughed.

It was an uncomfortable, dismissive laugh.

"That can't be right. Emily arranged the dinner, but Daniel is responsible for the bill.""

Thomas looked at his paperwork.

"According to our reservation records, Mrs. Emily Carter is the sole authorized account holder. The final balance is therefore not covered.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"That's impossible.""

Thomas remained professional.

"I'm afraid it's quite clear, sir.""

Margaret snatched the folder from him.

"Give me that.""

She opened it.

The total was printed in bold black letters.

<text weight="semibold" tabularNums={true}>$18,742.60</text>

Margaret stared.

Her champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.

"That's ridiculous!""

Thomas nodded politely.

"The amount includes the private dining room, catering, beverages, service charges, and additional items ordered during the evening.""

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"Pay it.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Mom, I don't have eighteen thousand dollars available.""

"What do you mean you don't have it?""

"I told you my business account was temporarily restricted.""

Margaret's face reddened.

"Then use your personal card!""

Daniel pulled out his wallet.

He handed Thomas a black credit card.

Thomas returned a moment later.

"I'm sorry, sir. The transaction was declined.""

Daniel's face went pale.

"Try it again.""

"We already did.""

"Then try another terminal.""

"Sir, the payment has been declined by the issuing bank.""

Margaret slammed the folder onto the table.

"This is absurd! Do you know who we are?""

Thomas didn't move.

"I understand you're a guest at the Whitmore celebration, ma'am. However, the outstanding balance still needs to be settled.""

Patricia leaned toward Margaret.

"Perhaps we should each contribute.""

Margaret turned sharply.

"Absolutely not. This is Daniel's responsibility.""

Victoria quietly placed her napkin on the table.

"I think I should call my father.""

Margaret immediately brightened.

"That's a wonderful idea, sweetheart.""

Victoria stepped away.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Mom, we need to find Emily.""

Margaret looked disgusted.

"Why? So she can make another scene?""

"She booked everything. Maybe she can reinstate the payment.""

Margaret gave him a hard look.

"You are not asking that woman for anything. She needs to learn that she cannot control this family with money.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Mom, she just did.""

Before Margaret could respond, Thomas returned with a second document.

"There's one more matter, Mrs. Whitmore.""

"What now?""

"The additional guest accommodations were also charged to the same account.""

Margaret frowned.

"What additional accommodations?""

Thomas pointed to a section of the bill.

"Three private car transfers, an upgraded champagne package, and a separate floral arrangement were added to the reservation yesterday.""

Margaret glanced at Daniel.

He looked away.

"Those were necessary," she muttered.

Thomas continued.

"Unfortunately, they were not included in the original estimate.""

Margaret's eyes widened.

"How much?""

"An additional $4,360.""

The table erupted.

"Twenty-three thousand dollars?"" Patricia exclaimed.

"Who ordered all this?"" someone asked.

Margaret pointed toward Daniel.

"He arranged the details.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Mom, you told me to add those things.""

"I told you to make the evening special!""

"With whose money?""

Margaret went silent.

Victoria returned, holding her phone.

"My father says he can transfer some money tomorrow morning, but he wants to know why the payment wasn't arranged beforehand.""

Margaret stiffened.

"Tell him it's a temporary misunderstanding.""

Victoria looked toward the bill.

"Margaret, this isn't a misunderstanding. It's almost twenty-five thousand dollars.""

Then she turned to Daniel.

"Did you actually expect Emily to pay for all of this?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Victoria slowly removed the diamond necklace from her neck and placed it beside her plate.

"There's something you should know.""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

Victoria's expression had changed.

"I didn't come here because I wanted to rekindle our relationship.""

Margaret blinked.

"What are you talking about?""

Victoria looked directly at Daniel.

"Your mother told my father that you were getting divorced.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Victoria, don't.""

She ignored him.

"She said the divorce was already agreed upon and that you were just waiting for the right time to announce it.""

Margaret shot to her feet.

"That's none of your business!""

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"You invited me here and seated me beside a married man. You made it my business.""

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

"Can we talk outside?""

She pulled away.

"No. I'm done pretending.""

Then she looked at Margaret.

"By the way, your son told me Emily was financially irresponsible. He said she was about to lose her company and that he was helping her manage the money.""

Patricia slowly turned toward Daniel.

"Is that true?""

Daniel said nothing.

Thomas cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I need to know how you'd like to proceed with the payment.""

Margaret's hands began trembling.

"Give us a moment.""

"Of course.""

He stepped away.

Margaret leaned toward Daniel.

"Call Emily. Now.""

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He called once.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then he sent a message.

*Daniel:* Emily, this has gone too far. You need to fix this immediately.

A few seconds later, his phone vibrated.

It wasn't Emily.

It was a notification from their joint banking account.

<text color="danger" weight="semibold" size="sm">ACCOUNT ACCESS UPDATED</text>

Daniel opened it.

The notification informed him that his access to several business-linked financial accounts had been revoked.

He looked up sharply.

"What did she do?""

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"Daniel?""

He opened the account details.

The balance was still there.

But the authorized users had changed.

And beside Emily's name was a note:

*Primary account administrator.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared.

It was an email from a law firm.

The subject line made his stomach drop.

*Notice of Financial Misrepresentation and Request for Preservation of Records.*

Margaret saw his expression.

"What is it?""

Daniel slowly looked at his mother.

"Mom, what exactly did you tell Emily about the money you borrowed from her company?""

May you like

Margaret's lips parted.

For the first time that evening, she had no answer.
