Chapter 6: The Inheritance Nobody Expected
Nobody spoke.
Robert Ellis placed three documents on the desk.
The first was a birth certificate.
The second was a sealed DNA report.
The third was a legal instrument bearing my grandmother's signature.
Vanessa stared at the papers.
“I don't want to see that.””
Robert adjusted his glasses.
“I understand this is difficult, but you deserve to know the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
Robert looked at Patricia.
“Mrs. Hawthorne, did you ever inform Vanessa that Margaret Bennett was her biological mother?””
Patricia shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you know about the inheritance provisions?””
“Yes.””
“And did you participate in any attempt to transfer trust-owned property into Hawthorne Holdings?””
Patricia's face went white.
“That's a separate matter.””
“I'm afraid it isn't.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Robert, we can discuss the business privately.””
Robert didn't look at him.
“Mr. Hawthorne, you've had several opportunities to discuss this privately. Unfortunately, the documents submitted in your name suggest that you chose a different approach.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Vanessa picked up the birth certificate.
Her hands were shaking.
“Margaret Bennett,” she read aloud.
Then she looked at Patricia.
“You told me my mother died when I was born.””
Patricia began crying.
“I did what I thought was best.””
“You told me she didn't want me!””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Vanessa threw the document onto the desk.
“From what? The truth?””
Patricia reached for her.
Vanessa stepped away.
“Don't.””
The room fell silent again.
Robert opened the DNA report.
“Before Mrs. Bennett passed away, she arranged independent testing using legally obtained samples from both parties. The results confirmed that Margaret Bennett was Vanessa's biological mother.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Robert continued.
“Mrs. Bennett also preserved evidence establishing the family relationships necessary to administer the trust.””
I looked at him.
“What about my mother?””
Robert paused.
“Your mother is a separate matter. Her current whereabouts have not been confirmed.””
“Then why did my grandmother write that she was alive?””
“Because Mrs. Bennett received correspondence from her.””
“When?””
“The last confirmed letter arrived six months before your grandmother died.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Can I see it?””
Robert opened another section of the folder.
“Not tonight. First, we need to address the ownership structure.””
Daniel exhaled sharply.
“Here we go.””
Robert turned toward him.
“Mr. Hawthorne, the business you have been operating under the name Hawthorne Holdings is not owned by your family in the way you have represented to investors.””
Daniel folded his arms.
“My father built that company.””
“Your father managed it. The original capital came from Eleanor Bennett's private holdings. The controlling shares were transferred into the Bennett Family Trust decades ago.””
“That was supposed to change after she died.””
“It did change.””
Robert slid a document toward me.
“You became the controlling beneficiary.””
I glanced down.
My name appeared beside 68 percent of the voting shares.
Sixty-eight percent.
I looked up.
“What about the remaining shares?””
“Twenty percent was reserved for Vanessa under the original family settlement, subject to verification of her identity and the conditions set out in the trust.””
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“Twenty percent?””
“Yes.””
“And the rest?””
“Four percent is held by a charitable foundation. The remaining eight percent is divided among several minority shareholders.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“This is absurd. Vanessa can't suddenly walk in here and claim a company.””
Robert remained calm.
“She isn't claiming anything tonight. The trust has recognized her eligibility as a beneficiary.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Does that mean we're supposed to be sisters now?””
I didn't know what to say.
A few hours earlier, she had been standing in front of a mirror wearing my wedding dress.
She had laughed when Patricia slapped me.
She had called my grandmother's gift something she deserved.
And now she was learning that the same grandmother had protected her future.
“I don't know what we're supposed to be,” I finally said.
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn't know.””
“I believe you.””
Patricia suddenly stepped forward.
“But none of this changes the fact that I raised her.””
Robert nodded.
“Your role as her guardian is acknowledged. However, it does not grant you ownership of trust assets.””
Patricia's expression hardened.
“You cannot take everything away from me.””
“No one is doing that without due process,” Robert replied.
“But your authority to manage certain assets is under immediate review.””
She turned toward me.
“Claire, please. You know I never intended to hurt you.””
I touched my cheek.
“Really?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I was angry.””
“You slapped me because I wouldn't give your daughter my wedding dress.””
“I was wrong.””
“You told me I had no right to refuse.””
“I know.””
“You made me feel like I didn't belong in my own home.””
Patricia began crying harder.
“I was afraid.””
I looked at her.
“Of what?””
She glanced at Robert.
Then she whispered, “Of losing everything.””
Robert opened the final document.
“Which brings us to the attempted transfer.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Robert continued.
“The investigation indicates that approximately three million dollars in trust-controlled funds were diverted through a private company registered to Vanessa Hawthorne.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“What?””
Robert turned a page.
“The company was created using your personal identification information, Miss Hawthorne.””
“I never created a company!””
Daniel looked at her.
“Vanessa, calm down.””
She spun toward him.
“Did you use my name?””
He said nothing.
“Daniel!””
“I was going to explain.””
“Explain what?””
“That the company was temporary.””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“You put three million dollars in my name?””
“It's not what it sounds like.””
Robert interrupted.
“The financial records suggest the company was used to receive funds from several asset transfers. Some of those transfers were unauthorized.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did the money go?””
He swallowed.
“Business expenses.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Some went toward paying debts.””
“Whose debts?””
He didn't respond.
Robert placed another sheet on the desk.
“Some funds were also transferred to an overseas account.””
Patricia sat down abruptly.
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“I didn't know anything about this.””
Robert nodded.
“We have no evidence at this stage that you personally authorized the transfers. That will be part of the investigation.””
Daniel moved toward the folder.
Robert closed it.
“Please don't touch the documents.””
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely helpless.
He turned to me.
“Claire, you can stop this.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
“You control the trust. You can tell them it was a misunderstanding.””
“A misunderstanding?””
“Yes. We can fix the paperwork. We can repay the money.””
“Where will you get three million dollars?””
He looked at me.
I understood then.
He expected me to pay.
Again.
Just as I had paid the mortgage, covered his business losses, and quietly financed the lifestyle his mother pretended to own.
“You still think I'll save you,” I whispered.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I'm your husband.””
I looked at Robert.
“What's the next step?””
Robert opened his briefcase and removed a formal notice.
“Temporary suspension of the Hawthorne family's authority over the trust-controlled assets, pending independent review.””
Patricia gasped.
Daniel's face darkened.
“You can't do that.””
Robert handed me the notice.
“Your signature is required to authorize the next stage.””
I picked up the pen.
But before I could sign, Vanessa spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She was staring at another document in the folder.
“What's this?””
Robert followed her gaze.
“That is the original beneficiary instruction.””
Vanessa pointed to a paragraph.
“Why does it say my inheritance depends on Claire?””
Robert hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
“Because your grandmother included one final condition.””
“What condition?”” I asked.
Robert read the paragraph aloud.
“Neither daughter may exercise her full inheritance rights until the other daughter is protected from any financial deception committed by the Hawthorne family.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
My grandmother had made sure we could not be separated by money.
But there was something else.
A handwritten note beneath the legal provision.
Robert turned the page.
“Mrs. Bennett also left a personal instruction.””
He read it slowly.
If the girls are ever reunited, tell them their mother did not abandon them.
My chest tightened.
Robert placed the paper down.
Then he looked directly at us.
“Your mother has been trying to contact both of you.””
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Where is she?””
Robert opened his briefcase again.
This time, he removed a sealed envelope.
On the front were two names.
*CLAIRE AND VANESSA.*
Inside was a recent photograph.
A woman stood outside a small house, holding a newspaper.
She was older now.
Her hair was silver at the temples.
But the scar above her eyebrow was unmistakable.
My mother.
Alive.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
My girls, if you're finally seeing this, it means Eleanor could no longer keep our secret.
Then came the sentence that made Vanessa collapse into the chair.
I didn't leave you because I didn't love you. I left because your father threatened to take both of you away.
I looked at Robert.
“Where is she?””
He took a breath.
“She's in the United States. And according to the last message we received, she intends to return.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
I couldn't move.
For twenty years, I'd believed my mother was dead.
For twenty years, Vanessa had believed she was unwanted.
And now the woman who had supposedly disappeared was coming back.
But Robert wasn't finished.
He turned over the photograph and showed us one final handwritten line.
Before you trust anyone, ask Daniel what happened to your father.
I slowly turned toward my husband.
Daniel was staring at the photograph.
His lips had gone completely white.
“Daniel,” I said quietly.
He backed toward the door.
“Don't.””
“What happened to my father?””
He shook his head.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The caller's name appeared.
*RICHARD HAWTHORNE — DECEASED.*
Daniel stared at it as if he were seeing a ghost.
And when he finally answered, a man's voice came through the speaker.
“Son, if Claire knows about Margaret, then there's no time left.””
May you like
A pause.
“Burn the original contract before she finds out who really caused that accident.””
