Chapter 9: The Woman Who Had Planned Everything

“It's a forgery.””

Richard said it three times before anyone answered.

Zarya stood in the living room with the deed in her hands. Monica had moved to the window, while Alexander examined the document beneath the chandelier.

“Look at the ink,” Richard insisted.

“Elena never signed anything like this.””

Monica folded her arms.

“You said the same thing when the lawyers first presented it.””

“Because I knew the signature was false!””

“Then why did you pay the money?””

Richard's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Zarya looked between them.

“Enough. I want the entire truth. No more secret meetings, no more missing documents, and no more telling me you're protecting me.””

She placed the deed on the table.

“Start with the money.””

Richard sat heavily in an armchair.

“The northern property belonged to Elena's family. Before she married me, she discovered that several developers were using the land to conceal financial fraud. Thomas Hayes was investigating the scheme.””

Alexander frowned.

“My father was investigating it?””

“Yes. He believed the missing money had been routed through companies connected to a public housing project.””

Zarya looked at the deed.

“And you were one of those companies?””

Richard lowered his head.

“Some of the money passed through the Williams Group. I didn't know its origin at first.””

“Then what happened?””

“Thomas confronted me. He said he had evidence that would destroy my company. Elena wanted to report everything to the authorities, but Thomas warned her that the people behind the fraud were dangerous.””

Monica interrupted.

“He also told Elena that the money could be recovered if she transferred her property rights to a trust.””

Alexander turned toward her.

“Why would my father need her land to recover stolen money?””

“Because the land had been used as collateral for several of the fraudulent loans,” Monica replied.

“If Elena retained ownership, the creditors could seize it while the investigation continued.””

Zarya shook her head.

“That doesn't explain why my mother disappeared.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“Because someone threatened to kill her.””

The room became still.

“Who?”” Zarya asked.

“I never learned his identity. Thomas received a letter containing photographs of Elena and you. You were a child. The message was clear: if Elena went to the authorities, you would be next.””

Zarya's chest tightened.

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“Thomas believed the threat came from someone inside the investigation. He said reporting it could make things worse.””

“So you helped her disappear.””

“Yes.””

“And you told me she died.””

Richard's eyes filled.

“I thought it would protect you from anyone searching for her.””

Zarya looked at Monica.

“You knew about this?””

Monica nodded.

“Elena asked me to help arrange the false death records. I was working as a legal assistant then. I knew how to make the paperwork look legitimate.””

“Why did you agree?””

“Because I owed her my life.””

Zarya stared at her.

Monica looked away.

“Before I married your father, I was drowning in debt. Elena discovered that my employer had been stealing from clients and helped me expose him. I could have gone to prison for signing documents I didn't understand. She saved me.””

“And you repaid her by helping her vanish?””

“I helped her survive.””

Monica's voice cracked.

“Then I married Richard, hoping to keep you safe. I thought that if I stayed close to him, I could make sure he never revealed your location.””

Zarya felt a bitter laugh rise in her throat.

“You married my father to protect me?””

“At first.””

“And afterward?””

Monica's expression hardened again.

“Afterward, I realized that your father was never going to let me control the family. You were his weakness. Damon was his heir in everything except the law, and I was tired of living in a house where everyone treated me as an outsider.””

“So you took your anger out on me.””

“Yes.””

The admission was so blunt that Zarya had no immediate response.

Monica continued.

“I told myself that if you became dependent on your father, he would never let you go. I wanted you to leave the house, build your own life, and stop being the center of every decision he made.””

“You ripped up my diploma.””

“I was angry.””

“You let Damon push me to the floor.””

“I didn't stop him.””

“You humiliated me at my engagement dinner.””

Monica looked down.

“I wanted Alexander to reject you before you discovered the truth about the land.””

Zarya stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because your marriage would have placed you directly inside the Hayes family. And if you inherited the property, Alexander's company could have been forced into bankruptcy.””

Alexander's expression darkened.

“That's not how ownership disputes work.””

“Not when the documents are clean,” Monica replied.

“But when the original deed is missing and a fraudulent transfer has been recorded, a lawsuit can freeze development for years.””

Richard stood.

“Monica, you knew the original deed was forged. Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I discovered something else.””

She reached into her handbag and produced a folded letter.

“Elena sent this to me four years ago.””

Zarya took it.

The letter was short.

Monica,

The child is safe. The land remains protected. If Richard asks about the original deed, tell him nothing. If Damon begins asking questions, do not trust him.

The person who funded my disappearance has not stopped searching for the property. I believe he intends to claim it when Zarya turns twenty-five.

If that happens, give my daughter the enclosed instructions.

A second page was attached.

It contained a bank account number, the name of a private trust company, and a date: Zarya's twenty-fifth birthday.

Zarya read it twice.

“Why didn't you give this to me when you received it?””

Monica's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I didn't know whether Elena was telling the truth. And because I was afraid of what would happen if I challenged the people behind the land.””

“You had four years.””

“I know.””

Zarya placed the letter on the table.

“I don't forgive you.””

Monica nodded.

“I don't expect you to.””

Richard moved toward his daughter.

“Zarya, we can still fix this. I'll give you every document I have. I'll cooperate with the authorities. We can protect the property and find your mother.””

Zarya stepped back.

“You've had twenty-six years to do those things.””

“I was afraid.””

“So was I.””

Her voice broke.

“I was fourteen years old when I stood beside a closed coffin and said goodbye to a woman who was still alive. I grew up believing she had left me. I spent years wondering what I'd done wrong.””

Richard covered his face.

“I know.””

“No, Dad. You don't.””

She picked up the letter and turned toward Alexander.

“We need to find the trust company.””

He nodded.

“I can arrange a meeting with their legal department.””

“Not your company's lawyers. Independent counsel.””

“Agreed.””

For the first time that day, she saw something like relief in his face.

They left the mansion together.

At the trust company's office, a senior attorney named Rebecca Shaw reviewed the documents in a private conference room. She asked Zarya to provide identification, then examined the handwritten letter and the property deed.

After nearly an hour, she removed her glasses.

“The E.H. Land Trust is genuine,” she said.

“However, the document you possess is not the complete agreement.””

Zarya's stomach tightened.

“What's missing?””

“The final schedule, which identifies the original beneficiary and the conditions under which the property rights transfer.””

“Can you access it?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“The schedule was deposited in a separate vault under a sealed instruction. We have been waiting for the beneficiary to appear.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust requires the beneficiary to reach twenty-five before the contents can be released.””

Zarya stared at her.

“My birthday is in three months.””

“Correct. But there is an exception. If the beneficiary faces imminent financial harm or coercion, the trustee may authorize an early disclosure.””

Alexander leaned forward.

“Would the current development project qualify?””

“Potentially. Especially if the property is being transferred without valid consent.””

Rebecca opened a computer file.

“The trust also contains a clause prohibiting the sale or transfer of the property to any party connected to the original financial fraud.””

Zarya felt a chill.

“Does that include Hayes Urban Holdings?””

“We cannot determine that until we review the final schedule.””

Rebecca turned the screen toward them.

A list of historical transactions appeared.

Several shell companies were connected to the northern property. One was registered to Thomas Hayes. Another belonged to Richard Williams.

The final company had been dissolved twenty-five years earlier.

Its sole shareholder was listed as *Damon Williams*.

Zarya stared at the screen.

“Damon was a baby.””

“According to the records, the company was established in his name shortly after his birth,” Rebecca explained.

“The funds were held in trust until he reached adulthood.””

Alexander's face tightened.

“That means someone used Damon as a nominee.””

“Possibly.””

Zarya thought about the way Damon had arrived at the cottage, already knowing what she had found. The flowers. The offer to exchange information for the deed. His certainty that he could claim the property.

“He knows more than he's telling us.””

Rebecca nodded.

“And if he attempts to transfer the land before the final schedule is disclosed, we may need to seek an injunction.””

Zarya stood.

“Then we file it today.””

Rebecca began preparing the paperwork.

Alexander walked with Zarya toward the elevator.

“You did well in there.””

She gave him a tired look.

“Don't congratulate me yet. We haven't found my mother.””

“No. But we're closer.””

The elevator doors opened.

Inside stood Damon.

He wore a navy suit and held a thick folder beneath one arm.

His smile was pleasant enough to frighten her.

“Zarya. Alexander. I was hoping we'd run into each other.””

Alexander stepped in front of her.

“What do you want?””

Damon held up the folder.

“The original trust schedule.””

Zarya's heart began pounding.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the person who funded the disappearance.””

He opened the folder and removed a photograph.

Elena Williams stood outside a small seaside house, older than in the photographs Zarya remembered, but unmistakably alive.

The date printed on the back was from two months earlier.

Zarya reached for it.

Damon pulled it away.

“Not so fast.””

“Where is she?””

“Sign the property rights over to me, and I'll take you to her.””

Alexander grabbed the folder.

Damon struck him across the face.

The sound echoed through the elevator lobby.

Security rushed toward them.

Damon backed away, laughing.

“You have forty-eight hours, Zarya. After that, the land gets transferred, the evidence disappears, and your mother becomes impossible to find.””

He turned toward the exit.

Then he stopped and looked back.

“Oh, and one more thing.””

He smiled.

“The man who paid to make your mother disappear is still alive.””

Zarya's voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Who?””

Damon's smile widened.

“Ask your father who attended his wedding to Monica.””

Then he disappeared through the lobby doors.

Zarya stood frozen, clutching the photograph Alexander had managed to retrieve.

In the background, reflected in the seaside house's window, stood an elderly man wearing a silver wedding ring.

Richard wore the same ring.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten message from her mother.

*ZARYA, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THE MAN WHO RAISED YOU IS NOT THE ONLY FATHER YOU HAVE EVER HAD.*
