Chapter 7: The Man Who Wanted My Daughter
I read the sentence on the court document until the words blurred.
*The child must be transferred before the original DNA report becomes public.*
Someone had written it in blue ink beneath the name of a man I had never met.
A man who apparently wanted custody of my daughter.
A man whose identity had been hidden from me for ten years.
I took the document straight to Melissa Grant, the hospital social worker. She was speaking with another member of the safeguarding team when I entered, but she stopped as soon as she saw my face.
“Where did you get that?”” she asked.
“Someone left it outside the consultation room. Claire and her attorney have disappeared, and this is what they left behind.””
Melissa read the sentence twice.
“I'm going to need to document this and notify the appropriate people. Please don't contact the named individual or attempt to investigate this yourself.””
“I've spent ten years raising a child while someone apparently plotted to take her away from me. You want me to sit here and do nothing?””
“No,” Melissa replied firmly.
“I want you to remain with Maya, preserve what you've found, and let the people responsible for investigating this do their jobs. Acting impulsively could make it harder to protect her.””
I hated that she was right.
I handed her the document.
“Then tell me who this man is.””
She examined the name printed beneath the heading.
“His name is Adrian Cole. The document alone doesn't establish what his involvement is, but we will pass it to the appropriate authorities.””
Adrian Cole.
The name meant nothing to me.
I returned to Maya's room and sat beside her bed. She had been sleeping for almost an hour, but her breathing changed whenever someone walked past the door.
I wondered how long she had lived like this.
How many nights had she lain awake, afraid that telling the truth would destroy the only family she knew?
At around two in the morning, Nurse Nia came in with an update from the medical team.
“Maya's condition is stable,” she said.
“The doctors are continuing to monitor her and investigate the abdominal pain. We have also documented the concerns about the substances found in the backpack.””
“Have they identified everything?””
“Not yet. Some items require further testing. We'll tell you what we can confirm when the results are available.””
I nodded.
Then I asked the question that had been tormenting me.
“Did Claire really give her something to keep her quiet?””
Nia pulled a chair closer.
“Daniel, I can't tell you what your wife intended. That's something the investigation must establish. But Maya has described being given tablets without understanding what they were, and she's expressed fear about telling you. Those concerns are serious.””
I looked at my sleeping daughter.
“She thought I would stop loving her.””
“Children often blame themselves when adults put them in frightening situations. What she needs from you now is consistency. Keep reminding her that she hasn't done anything wrong.””
After Nia left, I called Lauren.
She answered almost immediately.
“Daniel? I've been trying to reach you.””
“Do you know a man named Adrian Cole?””
Silence.
Then my sister whispered, “Where did you hear that name?””
My entire body went rigid.
“You know him?””
“I know who he is.””
“Then start talking.””
Lauren took a shaky breath.
“Claire introduced him to me about six months ago. She said he was an old family friend who was helping her with a business problem.””
“What business problem?””
“She wouldn't explain. But they met several times. Once, I saw them arguing outside a restaurant. Claire was crying, and Adrian told her that she had promised him something.””
“What had she promised?””
“I don't know.””
“Did he know about Maya?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Lauren hesitated.
“He asked me whether Maya looked like you.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did you tell him?””
“I said she had your eyes.””
“And what did he say?””
“He laughed. Then he said appearances could be misleading.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why didn't you tell me any of this?””
“Because I didn't understand what was happening! Claire told me Adrian had helped her during a difficult period before you married her. She said he was trying to cause trouble because he wanted money.””
“Money from whom?””
“She never told me.””
I paced the corridor, trying to piece together the fragments.
“Lauren, did Claire ever say Adrian was Maya's biological father?””
“No. Never.””
“Did she mention a DNA test?””
Another pause.
Then Lauren said, “There was one time when I went to Claire's house while you were at work. She was on the phone, and I heard her say something about a report being kept somewhere safe. When she noticed me, she hung up.””
“Where was Maya?””
“Upstairs.””
I stopped walking.
“Was she alone?””
“I think so.””
I looked toward the treatment room.
My daughter had been upstairs, within reach of her mother, while adults discussed a secret that could alter her entire life.
“Lauren, I need you to do something for me. Write down everything you remember about Adrian, Claire, and that conversation. Don't guess. Just write what you actually saw and heard.””
“I will.””
“And Lauren?””
“Yes?””
“You're going to have to tell the truth about that statement you signed.””
“I know,” she whispered.
“I will.””
When the call ended, I returned to Maya.
She was awake, staring at the ceiling.
“Daddy?””
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Are we going to lose our house?””
The question caught me off guard.
“Why would you think that?””
“Mommy said we might have to move because of money. She said if Adrian didn't get what he wanted, we would lose everything.””
I sat beside her.
“Did Mommy tell you what Adrian wanted?””
Maya shook her head.
“She said he was a bad man, but she had to be nice to him.””
My skin prickled.
“Did he ever come to our house?””
“Once. When you were at work.””
“When was that?””
“I don't remember. I was little.””
“What happened?””
Maya pulled the blanket up to her chin.
“He gave Mommy an envelope. Then he asked to see me.””
I swallowed.
“Did he talk to you?””
“He asked if I knew who my real daddy was.””
My heart seemed to stop.
“What did you say?””
“I said you were my daddy.””
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“He laughed and said Mommy hadn't told me everything.””
I reached for her hand.
“Did he touch you or hurt you in any way?””
“No. He just looked at me. Then he told Mommy she had until my next birthday to make things right.””
“Did your mother explain what he meant?””
“She said he was trying to scare her.””
I held my daughter close, careful of the medical equipment.
“I'm sorry you had to hear that.””
Maya pressed her face against my shoulder.
“Daddy, am I bad because I have another daddy?””
“No, sweetheart. Absolutely not.””
“But if he wants me, will I have to go?””
I struggled to find an answer that was honest without frightening her.
“I can't promise exactly what the adults will decide. But I can promise that I will tell the truth, that I will fight for your safety, and that you will not have to handle this alone.””
She nodded against my shoulder.
Then she whispered, “There's something else in the notebook.””
I drew back slightly.
“What is it?””
“Mommy wrote that Adrian would get the money after I went to live with him.””
The room seemed to grow colder.
“Did she write how much?””
Maya shook her head.
“No. But there was a number. And there was another name beside it.””
“What name?””
She closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“Mommy called him Uncle Peter.””
I stared at her.
My father's name had been Peter.
He had died before Maya's second birthday.
For ten years, I had believed my father had left us a modest inheritance that helped Claire and me buy our first house.
I had handled the paperwork myself. The money had come through an estate administrator, and I had trusted every document because I had trusted my family.
Now, for the first time, I wondered whether that inheritance had been connected to the secret Claire had been hiding.
I stood and called my father's former estate solicitor.
The number was still saved in my phone.
A woman answered, and I explained that I needed to ask about a financial matter connected to my father's estate.
She requested my details, placed me on hold, and returned several minutes later.
“Mr. Bennett,” she said carefully, “your father's estate was settled years ago. Is there a specific transaction you're concerned about?””
“Yes. A payment connected to someone named Adrian Cole.””
The silence on the other end lasted just long enough to frighten me.
“I'm afraid I can't discuss confidential financial records without reviewing the relevant documents.””
“Then please review them. I believe the transaction may be connected to a child safeguarding investigation.””
“I understand. I'll need to consult the file and determine what can lawfully be disclosed.””
“Can you tell me whether Adrian Cole received money from my father's estate?””
Another pause.
Then she said, “I can tell you that your father made a substantial payment to a third party shortly before his death. The transaction was not included in the summary you received.””
My knees nearly gave way.
“Who received it?””
“I'll need to verify the records before I can answer that.””
“Please do it as quickly as possible.””
“I will.””
The call ended.
I stood beside Maya's bed, staring at my phone.
If my father had paid Adrian Cole, and Claire had concealed a DNA report, then the secret might reach far beyond my marriage.
It might have begun before Maya was born.
Before I had any reason to suspect my wife of anything.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was an unfamiliar number.
A man's voice spoke before I could introduce myself.
“Daniel Bennett. My name is Adrian Cole.””
I couldn't speak.
“I understand your wife has made a mess of things,” he continued.
“But I think we can avoid making this worse.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want with my daughter?””
A short laugh.
“Your daughter? That's precisely the problem, Daniel.””
“Stay away from Maya.””
“I haven't been near her in years. But I believe you and I need to discuss what Claire promised me.””
“What did she promise?””
His voice became cold.
“The truth about who Maya belongs to.””
Then he hung up.
I stared at the screen, my hands shaking.
And a moment later, a message arrived with a photograph attached.
It showed Claire standing outside a courthouse, holding a newborn baby.
The baby was Maya.
Beside Claire stood Adrian Cole.
May you like
And on the back of the photograph, in handwriting I recognized as my wife's, were six words:
*The money is ours if he never knows.*
