Chapter 4: The Man Waiting in Hawaii

Vanessa reached for the envelope again, but I stepped back.

“Answer me,” I said.

“What does Ethan's father have to do with Lily's money?””

Her eyes darted toward the bedroom door.

“Not in here.””

“Then where? The kitchen? The garage? Would you prefer to explain it somewhere Lily can't hear you?””

“Daniel, please.””

I had heard that word from her a hundred times. Usually, it meant she wanted me to stop asking questions before she had to give an answer.

This time, I wasn't going to stop.

I put my phone on speaker.

“Rachel, tell me exactly what Vanessa said.””

My sister-in-law hesitated.

“Vanessa called me last night. She said Mark had agreed to meet her in Hawaii, and they were going to finalize the arrangement before the end of the trip.””

Vanessa snatched at the phone.

“Rachel, shut up!””

I pulled it away.

“Finalize what arrangement?””

Rachel exhaled shakily.

“Mark has been struggling financially. His business failed last year, and he owes money to several creditors. Vanessa told me he was willing to sign something giving up future claims to Ethan's support in exchange for a financial settlement.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were planning to pay him?””

“No,” she said quickly.

“That's not what happened.””

Rachel continued.

“She said the money would come from a family investment account. I assumed she meant your joint account, Daniel. I didn't know she was talking about Lily's savings until I saw the messages.””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“You have no idea what you're talking about!””

“Then explain it,” I said.

She looked at me, and for a second, I thought she might tell the truth.

Instead, she turned toward the window.

“Mark has been threatening to take Ethan away from me.””

The anger in her voice was suddenly replaced by something raw.

“He keeps saying that if I can't provide a stable home, he'll ask for primary custody. He knows I can't afford a lawyer to fight him for months. He's been sending me messages about money, about my business, about everything he thinks I'm doing wrong.””

I watched her carefully.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you already have enough problems with Lily.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Because every time I ask for something for Ethan, you remind me that Lily's money is separate! You tell me we can discuss it, but you never understand how desperate I feel!””

I rubbed a hand over my face.

“Vanessa, I offered to help you build a savings account for Ethan.””

“And then what? You would control it. You'd decide what was reasonable. You'd make sure Lily always had more.””

“That's what you think this is about?””

“That's what it has always been about!””

Her voice echoed through the bedroom.

Downstairs, a floorboard creaked.

We both went silent.

A moment later, Lily appeared in the doorway, still wearing her school uniform.

My mother had picked her up early because she had a dentist appointment, and I had forgotten she would be home.

She stood perfectly still.

“Daddy?””

I crossed the room immediately.

“Hey, sweetheart. What's wrong?””

She glanced at Vanessa.

“Is Ethan's daddy going to take him away?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Lily, go to your room.””

“No,” I said.

“She can stay.””

Lily clutched the strap of her backpack.

“Is that why Mommy doesn't want me in Hawaii? Because she thinks Ethan needs more money than me?””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“No, Lily. That's not—”

“Then why did you say I take up too much space?””

Her voice cracked on the final word.

I crouched beside her.

“You shouldn't have had to hear any of this. The grown-ups are dealing with a problem, and none of it is your responsibility.””

“But Ethan is my brother.””

“I know.””

“If his daddy takes him away, can I still see him?””

My throat tightened.

I glanced at Vanessa.

She had turned away, pressing her fingers against her mouth.

“Yes,” I told Lily.

“We'll do everything we reasonably can to make sure you and Ethan stay connected.””

Lily nodded, though she looked far from reassured.

Then she did something that broke my heart.

She walked over to Vanessa and held out her stuffed rabbit.

“You can have Bunny if you're sad.””

Vanessa stared at the toy.

“Lily, I don't need—”

“It's okay,” Lily whispered.

“I know you love Ethan a lot.””

She placed the rabbit on the bed and left.

Neither Vanessa nor I moved until we heard Lily's bedroom door close.

I picked up the rabbit and carried it downstairs.

When I returned, Vanessa was sitting on the floor beside the bed, crying into her hands.

“I never wanted her to hear that.””

“But you were willing to let her believe she wasn't wanted.””

“I thought she would be happier staying with your mother.””

“She wanted to go swimming with her brother.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I know.””

“No, I don't think you do.””

I sat opposite her.

“If Mark is threatening you, we'll talk to an attorney. If you need help protecting your relationship with Ethan, we'll find out what your options are. But you don't get to use Lily's inheritance as a bargaining chip.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I haven't transferred anything.””

“Because the bank stopped it.””

She looked up sharply.

“What?””

“The request was flagged. The money is still protected.””

For the first time, I saw genuine fear cross her face.

“Daniel, you need to understand. Mark has been asking questions about the house, our finances, everything. He says if I can't show him that Ethan has a secure future, he'll use it against me.””

“So you thought you'd make Lily's future less secure to make Ethan's look better?””

“I thought I could fix everything before you found out.””

I stared at her.

“You had six weeks to tell me.””

She lowered her head.

I stood.

“I'm taking Lily to my mother's tonight. I'm not leaving her here while we figure this out.””

Vanessa grabbed my wrist.

“Don't take her away from me.””

I gently pulled free.

“I'm not taking her away from you. I'm giving her a place where she doesn't have to wonder whether she belongs.””

She began crying harder.

I walked out of the bedroom.

That evening, while Lily packed a small overnight bag, I called Mark.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Daniel. What a surprise.””

His voice was smooth, almost amused.

“I understand you're meeting Vanessa in Hawaii.””

A pause.

“Is that a problem?””

“What arrangement are you planning to make involving Ethan?””

Mark laughed softly.

“You should ask your wife.””

“I am asking you.””

“Look, Daniel, I don't know what Vanessa has told you, but I'm Ethan's father. I have a right to be concerned about his future.””

“Then concern yourself with his future. Leave Lily's savings out of it.””

The amusement disappeared from his voice.

“Ah. So you found out about the money.””

I gripped the phone.

“What exactly did Vanessa promise you?””

Mark was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “She promised me that if I signed the agreement, she would make sure Ethan had access to a substantial family fund. She said it was already arranged.””

“It's not arranged.””

“Then you have a problem, don't you?””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Vanessa hadn't merely planned to move Lily's money into an account under her own name.

She had apparently promised something to Mark before she had secured the funds.

And now Mark knew the transaction had been stopped.

My phone buzzed again.

An incoming text from an unknown number appeared.

It contained a photograph of an airline itinerary.

Vanessa's name was listed beside Mark's.

Their flight departed the following afternoon.

Beneath the image was a message.

*Your wife is going to Hawaii whether you approve or not. But you should know that the money isn't the only thing she's promised him. Ask her what she agreed to do about Ethan's custody.*

I looked toward the stairs, where Lily was singing softly to herself as she packed.

Then I turned back to the screen.

May you like

Because suddenly, I wasn't sure whether Vanessa's plan was simply to secure Ethan's future.

I was beginning to suspect she had already made a promise that could tear both children apart.
