Chapter 4: The Money Emily Never Knew She Had
“Has Vanessa ever told you that your daughter inherited money from someone you didn't know?””
Daniel's question hung between my wife and me.
I looked at Vanessa. She was standing beside Emily's wardrobe, one hand gripping the edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
“No,” I said.
“Emily hasn't inherited anything that I'm aware of. My father left his estate to me, and my mother died before Emily was born. Who are you talking about?””
Daniel exhaled slowly.
“An account was opened in Emily's name eleven months ago. The initial deposit was $480,000. The money came from a trust established by a woman named Eleanor Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is Eleanor Whitmore?””
“That's what I've been trying to establish. The trust documents identify her as Emily's maternal great-aunt.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly, “who is Eleanor Whitmore?””
My wife pressed her lips together.
“I haven't heard that name in years.””
“Then you do know her.””
“Michael, this isn't the time.””
“Apparently, it's exactly the time. My lawyer just told me our daughter has nearly half a million dollars in an account I never knew existed.””
Emily stood beside the desk, looking between us.
“I have money?””
Her voice was small, almost frightened.
Vanessa immediately turned toward her.
“Emily, darling, don't get excited. It's not as simple as your father is making it sound.””
“Why didn't you tell me?”” Emily asked.
“Because you were too young to understand.””
“I'm fifteen.””
“Exactly.””
I stepped between them.
“Stop deciding what Emily can understand. Start explaining what you've done.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel's name flashing on my phone.
“Put him on speaker.””
I did.
Daniel's voice filled the bedroom.
“Mrs. Carter, I need you to answer a few questions. Did you establish a custodial account for Emily Whitmore Carter using the Eleanor Whitmore trust?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I helped manage the paperwork.””
“Did you submit an application to transfer the funds into an account controlled by you?””
“No.””
“Then why does the bank have a signed authorization bearing your name and a second signature purporting to be Emily's?””
Vanessa's face changed.
Emily moved closer to me.
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
Vanessa looked at her daughter, and for a moment I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said, “Your father is making this sound criminal because he doesn't understand how complicated family finances can be.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Mrs. Carter, the bank has frozen the pending transaction because the signatures don't match the verified records. I strongly advise you not to destroy or remove any documents.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“You have no right to threaten me.””
“I'm advising you of the legal consequences of what the bank has discovered.””
She snatched a tissue from the bedside table and dabbed at her eyes.
Then came the performance I had seen countless times before.
The trembling lip.
The wounded expression.
The careful silence intended to make someone else feel cruel for asking questions.
“Michael,” she whispered, “I was trying to protect our family.””
I almost laughed.
“By stealing from our daughter?””
“I never stole anything.””
“Then explain the transfer.””
She looked at Emily.
“Your great-aunt was dying. She wanted to make sure you would be taken care of. I was the only person available to handle everything.””
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.
“Because you were always working.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
Vanessa dropped the tissue.
“Because I knew you'd make it impossible.””
“Impossible to do what?””
She said nothing.
I waited.
Finally, she walked to the window and stared out at the garden.
“Eleanor contacted me last year. She was furious with me because of something that happened before Emily was born. She said she wanted to leave money to Emily, not to me.””
“And you thought hiding it was the answer?””
“I thought I could manage it until Emily was old enough.””
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“Mrs. Carter, the account is in Emily's name. The funds are not yours to manage for your personal benefit. Did you attempt to move the money?””
Vanessa turned.
“I was going to borrow some of it.””
“How much?”” I asked.
She looked at the floor.
“How much, Vanessa?””
“Two hundred thousand.””
Emily made a small sound beside me.
I stared at my wife.
“You were going to take two hundred thousand dollars from your own daughter?””
“It was a temporary loan!””
“Against what collateral? Her future?””
“You don't understand what I was dealing with!””
“Then tell me.””
For several seconds, she stood motionless.
Then her anger burst through the carefully maintained mask.
“I was drowning, Michael!””
Her voice echoed off the walls.
“I had bills. I had commitments. I had people calling me every day. You left me in this enormous house with two children and expected me to smile through everything while you built your empire!””
“I paid every household expense.””
“That's not the same as having access to money!””
I stared at her.
There it was.
Not a confession of innocence, but a complaint that the money available to her hadn't been enough.
“You had three credit cards with limits of fifty thousand dollars,” I said.
“You had a monthly allowance for personal expenses. You had access to our joint account. What exactly were you drowning in?””
She looked away.
I remembered the boutique receipts in the first box. The designer handbags, jewelry purchases, spa reservations, and hotel charges.
I had assumed most of them were paid from our joint account.
Now I wondered how many other accounts existed.
Daniel spoke again.
“Michael, I need you to bring the documents to my office tomorrow morning. We should also contact the bank's fraud department and the school in Vermont.””
“No,” Vanessa said quickly.
Everyone went silent.
She took a step toward me.
“Don't contact the school.””
“Why not?””
“Because they'll cancel Emily's place.””
“Good.””
“You don't understand! If they cancel it, everything falls apart.””
“What falls apart?””
She looked at me with naked desperation.
Then her eyes shifted toward the suitcase beside Emily's wardrobe.
“Please, Michael. Just let her go tomorrow. We can discuss everything after she's settled.””
I felt something cold spread through my chest.
“You want me to send our daughter away while we investigate forged signatures and a fraudulent loan?””
“It's a good school!””
“Then why are you so frightened of me contacting it?””
Vanessa's silence answered more than her words had.
Emily suddenly spoke.
“Mom, did you really want me to leave because of the money?””
Vanessa's expression softened.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Then why did you make me stay home? Why did you make me cook and clean every day? Why did you tell me Dad didn't care about me?””
Vanessa reached for her.
Emily stepped back.
“Don't touch me.””
My wife froze.
It was the first time Emily had ever refused her mother so directly.
“Emily,” Vanessa whispered, “you don't know what you're saying.””
“I know I missed seventeen days of school. I know you took my phone when I tried to call Dad. I know you made me pack a suitcase.””
Her voice trembled, but she continued.
“And I know you told Noah he could have my room before I was even gone.””
Vanessa looked toward the doorway.
Noah had appeared again, holding his dinosaur toy.
“Mom said I could have it,” he murmured.
“Go downstairs, Noah,” Vanessa snapped.
He flinched.
I immediately stepped toward him.
“It's okay, buddy. Come here.””
He hurried to my side.
Vanessa looked at the three of us, and something in her expression hardened.
“You're all making me the villain.””
“No,” I said.
“Your choices are doing that.””
She picked up her handbag.
“Fine. If that's how you want it, I'm leaving.””
“Where are you going?””
“Somewhere I can think.””
“Not with those documents.””
She stared at me.
I held out my hand.
“Your keys, Vanessa.””
Her face flushed.
“You can't throw me out of my own house.””
“I'm not throwing you out. I'm asking you not to remove evidence while we investigate what you've done.””
For a moment, I thought she might throw the bag at me.
Instead, she reached inside and placed a small ring of keys in my palm.
Then she leaned close enough that only I could hear her.
“You think you've won because you found some papers.””
Her voice was almost gentle.
“You haven't even discovered what Eleanor left Emily.””
She walked past me.
At the doorway, she stopped and looked back at our daughter.
“Ask your father what happened the night you were born.””
Then she left.
Emily stared after her, pale and motionless.
I turned toward her.
“What does she mean?””
Emily shook her head.
“I don't know.””
But when I looked down at the documents again, I noticed something I had overlooked.
The trust agreement had been folded around an older letter.
Its edges were yellow with age.
The letter was addressed to Vanessa, dated three months before Emily's birth, and signed by Eleanor Whitmore.
At the bottom, one sentence had been underlined in blue ink.
If Michael ever discovers the truth about Emily's father, the entire family will have to answer for what happened.
I read it once.
Then again.
My hands began to shake.
Because Eleanor hadn't written Emily's grandfather.
She hadn't written the man who raised Emily.
May you like
She had written *Emily's father*.
And suddenly, I was no longer certain that the secret in our house was only about money.
