Chapter 4: The Name Nobody Expected

"Daniel Whitmore.""

Elise Monroe spoke the name quietly.

But its effect on Vanessa was immediate.

Her fingers slipped from the back of the chair. Brianna turned toward her mother, confused, while I stared at the document lying on the conference table.

"Who is Daniel Whitmore?"" I asked.

Elise studied Vanessa before answering.

"Daniel was the attorney who represented your mother when the original agreement was established. He was also the person responsible for safeguarding the ownership records of the Monroe Emerging Designer Legacy Fund.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is irrelevant. We came here to discuss Brianna's scholarship entry, not ancient family paperwork.""

Elise didn't blink.

"Actually, Mrs. Bennett, the paperwork is precisely why we're here.""

Brianna looked between them.

"Mom, do you know him?""

Vanessa straightened her jacket.

"No.""

It was the quickest lie I'd ever heard.

Elise opened the folder again.

"Daniel Whitmore passed away six years ago. Before his death, however, he transferred several original legal records to our foundation. Among them was a sealed statement concerning Catherine Bennett, Richard Bennett, and a child who was supposed to inherit certain creative rights.""

I swallowed.

"That child is me?""

"Yes, Olivia.""

Brianna suddenly laughed.

"Oh, come on. Are we seriously pretending Olivia is some kind of fashion heiress?""

Elise turned toward her.

"Nobody said she was an heiress. I said she was the designated beneficiary of her mother's intellectual property.""

"That's ridiculous," Brianna snapped.

"My mother has been married to Richard for years. She's his wife. She deserves something.""

"Marriage does not automatically transfer intellectual property rights," Elise replied.

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Richard never explained any of this to me.""

Elise raised an eyebrow.

"Perhaps he assumed you already knew.""

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at the old document again.

"Judge Monroe, why would my father sign something like this?""

Elise sat down.

"Because your mother was afraid her work would be taken from her.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Taken by whom?""

Elise hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Your father once managed the financial side of Catherine's design studio. He helped negotiate manufacturing agreements and licensing arrangements. When their marriage began deteriorating, Catherine discovered that several of her original designs had been presented to potential investors without her authorization.""

I stared at her.

"My parents were having problems?""

"Your mother believed someone was preparing to transfer her work into a company she didn't control.""

"Was my father involved?""

Elise folded her hands.

"That's what the original agreement was designed to prevent.""

Brianna pushed her chair backward.

"This is insane. My dress is registered. I have the documents.""

Elise looked at her.

"Your dress?""

"Yes!""

"Then explain why your submitted construction photographs contain a reflection of the blue floral curtains in Olivia's sewing room.""

Brianna froze.

Elise continued.

"Your stepfather's signature is not the only thing we've examined. Our technical team compared the original photographs from both submissions. Several images were taken in the same room, from the same camera position, with identical background objects.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You're accusing my daughter of theft based on photographs?""

"No," Elise replied.

"I'm investigating a documented ownership dispute supported by original sketches, timestamps, photographs, and a suspicious transfer agreement.""

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

"Mom, tell her!""

Vanessa looked at Elise.

Then she looked at me.

"You've always wanted to make this family look bad, Olivia.""

I stood.

"You're the one who let Brianna destroy my gown.""

"She didn't mean to!""

"She posted my design under her name.""

"She was confused.""

"She forged documents.""

"Watch your mouth!""

Elise raised one hand.

"Enough.""

Her voice was quiet, but everyone stopped.

"Neither contestant will be permitted to present a disputed design until this investigation is complete. Olivia, your original evidence will be preserved. Brianna, your submission is temporarily suspended.""

Brianna's face crumpled.

"You can't do that!""

"I can. And I have.""

Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.

"We're leaving.""

Elise didn't stop them.

But just as Vanessa reached the door, the judge spoke again.

"Mrs. Bennett, one more thing.""

Vanessa turned.

"Yes?""

"Your husband requested that I personally verify the beneficiary declaration three weeks ago. He specifically asked me not to disclose its contents until the final showcase.""

I felt my heart begin racing.

"Why?""

Elise looked at me.

"Because he wanted to make sure you had an opportunity to stand on your own merits before learning what your mother had left behind.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked terrified rather than angry.

Brianna whispered, "What did he leave her?""

Elise closed the folder.

"That is something Richard Bennett will have to explain himself.""

By the time I left Room Three, my hands were shaking.

I walked toward the glass corridor overlooking the exhibition hall.

Contestants were preparing their garments. Stylists rushed between racks. Assistants carried boxes of shoes and jewelry.

Everything looked normal.

But my life had just been turned upside down.

I called my father.

He answered after the second ring.

"Olivia?""

"Where are you?""

"At the office. What's wrong?""

"Did you sign a declaration three weeks ago confirming my mother's ownership rights?""

Silence.

Then he exhaled.

"Where did you see that?""

"At the competition. Elise Monroe showed me the documents.""

Another silence.

"Your stepmother is there, isn't she?""

"Yes.""

"Did she see the original agreement?""

"She saw enough.""

I heard him move away from the phone.

"Olivia, listen carefully. Do not let Vanessa take anything from you.""

I stopped walking.

"What are you talking about?""

"There's something I should have told you years ago.""

"Then tell me now.""

He lowered his voice.

"Your mother didn't leave you only her sewing machine.""

I closed my eyes.

"What else?""

"A trust.""

My knees nearly buckled.

"A trust?""

"Your mother established it through Daniel Whitmore. It included her original designs, licensing rights, and a financial account intended to support your education and future career.""

"How much money?""

"Olivia, the amount isn't the important part.""

"Then what is?""

He paused.

"Vanessa found out about it.""

My stomach turned.

"When?""

"Shortly after we married.""

"Did she know Brianna could never inherit it?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then why did she help Brianna steal my design?""

His voice cracked.

"Because she thought if Brianna could establish herself as the creator of your mother's work, she could challenge the trust.""

I couldn't speak.

Then Dad said something that made the blood drain from my face.

"Olivia, there's a reason Vanessa was so desperate to get you to sign those papers.""

"What reason?""

"She wasn't trying to give Brianna your scholarship.""

He paused.

"She was trying to get control of everything your mother left you.""

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Then another message appeared.

It was from an unknown number.

Your father doesn't know the whole truth. Ask him who paid for Brianna's fashion education.

May you like

A second message followed.

And ask him why Vanessa has been hiding the original trust amendment.
