Chapter 6: The Dead Woman's Signature
Dad sat down slowly.
The document lay on the coffee table between us, its edges trembling in his hands.
For several seconds, he simply stared at the date.
Then he reached for his glasses and read it again.
“This document is dated three years after Elena died,” he said.
“How is that possible?””
Tiffany stood near the front door, her handbag hanging from one shoulder.
“I told you, I didn't write that document.””
“Then why did you send it to my attorney?””
“I sent him the information I had.””
“Where did you get it?””
She looked at Denise.
Denise shook her head.
“Don't look at me. You told me it came from Elena's personal files.””
Dad lifted the document.
“Who prepared this?””
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember?””
“It was months ago, Khalil! I handled dozens of things for the wedding.””
“This has nothing to do with the wedding.””
“I was trying to make sure Ariana would be cared for if something happened to you.””
“By transferring her guardianship to you?””
“Yes!””
The answer came out like a scream.
Tiffany's chest rose and fell rapidly.
“Do you think I wanted to send her away? I wanted to make sure nobody could take her from me!””
I stared at her.
“You tried to send me to boarding school.””
“Because I couldn't manage you anymore!””
“You packed my things into garbage bags.””
“Because you refused to listen!””
“You broke Mom's picture.””
Tiffany's mouth snapped shut.
Dad stood.
“Stop. Every time Ariana tells you what you did, you give me another excuse. I am asking you one question, and I want one honest answer.””
He held up the document.
“Did you know this was false?””
Tiffany looked at the page.
Then she looked at Dad.
“I knew Elena had wanted you to move on.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
“I knew she wanted you to be happy.””
“Did you know this was false?””
Tiffany's shoulders dropped.
“I didn't create it.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“That still isn't an answer.””
She wiped her cheeks angrily.
“Richard gave it to me.””
The room fell silent.
Denise whispered, “Oh, Tiffany.””
Dad lowered the paper.
“Richard Hale gave you a document claiming my dead wife had appointed you as Ariana's guardian?””
“He said he had found it among old business records. He told me it could help protect the family.””
“What family?””
“Our family!””
Dad's voice rose.
“You mean you, Tiffany? Because you were trying to get my daughter removed from her home while arranging for someone else to control my estate!””
“I never wanted you to die!””
“Then why did you discuss what would happen if I did?””
“Because Richard said it was important to prepare for every possibility!””
Dad looked toward the window, struggling to control his breathing.
I could see the exhaustion in his face. He had spent years believing that working harder would protect us from the things we had already lost.
Now the person he had trusted to protect his daughter had apparently been helping someone build a plan around his absence.
“Did Richard ask you to do anything else?”” Dad asked.
Tiffany didn't answer.
He turned back to her.
“Did he?””
She pressed her lips together.
Denise reached into her handbag and removed her own phone.
“I have something else.””
Tiffany spun around.
“Denise, don't.””
Denise ignored her.
“Two weeks ago, Tiffany asked me to attend a meeting with Richard. She said it was about the wedding celebration and some investments you were considering.””
Dad stared at her.
“You met with Richard Hale?””
“I didn't know what he was planning,” Denise said quickly.
“I swear. I thought it was a business meeting.””
“What happened?””
Denise unlocked her phone.
“I recorded part of the conversation because Richard kept asking me to sign a document I didn't understand. I was frightened he would blame me for something later.””
Tiffany lunged toward her.
“Give me that phone!””
Denise stepped behind Dad.
“No!””
He raised his voice.
“Tiffany, move away from her.””
She froze.
Denise opened the audio file.
For a moment, all we heard was the clatter of dishes and the muffled hum of a restaurant.
Then Richard's voice emerged.
“Once the celebration is over, Khalil will be occupied with the company expansion. We need the guardianship matter settled before then.””
A second voice answered.
Tiffany.
“And Ariana?””
Richard chuckled.
“Once she is enrolled, she'll be far enough away that she won't interfere.””
Denise's recording continued.
“But Khalil won't agree to that,” Tiffany said.
“He doesn't have to agree if the documents are already in motion.””
“What about the house?””
“We'll deal with the house after the estate review. You just need to make sure the girl is out of the picture.””
Dad reached for the phone.
Denise paused the recording.
“There's more,” she whispered.
“But I couldn't bring myself to listen to the whole thing again.””
Dad looked at her.
“Play it.””
She pressed the screen.
Richard's voice returned.
“And remember, Tiffany, the wedding celebration is important. Everyone needs to believe you're the devoted wife who has finally brought stability to Khalil's family. Once the guests leave, the announcement will be much easier.””
Tiffany's recorded voice sounded nervous.
“What announcement?””
“The one about the new estate arrangements.””
“What if Khalil refuses?””
“He won't refuse if he believes it's already in his best interests.””
“And Ariana?””
A pause.
Then Richard spoke.
“By then, she won't have a say in anything.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
I felt sick.
The wedding celebration had suddenly become something else entirely. It wasn't simply a party Tiffany wanted to control. It was an opportunity to present a carefully constructed image of our family while the real decisions happened behind closed doors.
Dad looked at his wife.
“Were you planning to announce that I had changed my estate arrangements?””
Tiffany's eyes filled with tears.
“Richard said it would be easier if we made everything official at once.””
“Did you intend to tell our guests that I had agreed to transfer part of the house to you?””
“I thought you would eventually agree.””
“Did you intend to tell them that Elena had appointed you as Ariana's guardian?””
She looked down.
Dad's voice became almost inaudible.
“Did you intend to let everyone believe I had chosen this?””
Tiffany began sobbing.
“I wanted to belong here!””
I couldn't stop myself.
“Then why did you keep trying to make me leave?””
She looked at me with a mixture of fury and desperation.
“Because every time I looked at you, I saw a life I could never have!””
The words cut through the room.
Dad stared at her.
“You could have had a life with me without destroying the life my daughter already had.””
Tiffany shook her head.
“You don't understand. Richard promised me that if everything went according to plan, I would finally have security. He said I wouldn't have to depend on you for every decision.””
“Security?”” Dad repeated.
“By forging documents and trying to take control of my daughter?””
“He said you were vulnerable because you were always traveling. He said the company was exposed, and that if I didn't protect myself, I could lose everything.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I wanted to believe him.””
Dad looked away.
For the first time, Tiffany's explanation sounded less like a defense and more like a confession.
But it didn't excuse what she had done.
She had chosen to make me afraid in my own home. She had broken my mother's photograph, packed my clothes into garbage bags, and threatened to send me somewhere I had never agreed to go.
She had made every one of those choices herself.
Dad picked up his phone.
“Martin, I need you to contact the appropriate authorities and preserve every document related to Richard Hale. I also need an independent review of all recent changes to my estate and insurance records.””
He listened.
“Yes. Tonight.””
He ended the call.
Then he turned to Tiffany.
“You will not touch Ariana's documents, her belongings, or anything connected to her inheritance. Until we understand exactly what you've done, you will not make any decisions on her behalf.””
Tiffany stared at him.
“You can't just throw me out.””
“I'm not throwing you out tonight. I'm making sure my daughter is safe, and I'm getting legal advice before deciding what happens to this marriage.””
She looked at me.
“You've destroyed everything.””
I met her eyes.
“No. I recorded what you did.””
Dad moved beside me.
“That's enough, Tiffany.””
She grabbed her handbag and walked toward the staircase.
For one terrifying second, I thought she was going to my bedroom.
Dad stepped in front of her.
“Where are you going?””
“To get my things.””
“You can get your belongings with Denise present. You're not going into Ariana's room.””
Tiffany stared at him, then turned toward the guest bedroom instead.
The door slammed behind her.
I finally let myself breathe.
Dad pulled me into his arms.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered into my hair.
“I'm so sorry I didn't see what was happening.””
I clung to his jacket.
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
“I thought you would believe her.””
He held me tighter.
“You should never have had to prove that you deserved to feel safe in your own home.””
For the first time in years, I cried without worrying that someone would punish me for it.
Denise sat quietly at the dining table, her face buried in her hands.
After a while, she approached us.
“Ariana,” she said, “I know you have every reason to hate me. But there's one more thing I need to tell you.””
I pulled away from Dad.
“What?””
Denise glanced toward the guest bedroom to make sure Tiffany couldn't hear.
“When I was at the storage unit, I found a box labeled with your mother's name. Inside were letters, photographs, and a small envelope addressed to Khalil.””
Dad went still.
“Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?””
“Because Tiffany said the letters were personal, and I was afraid I would make things worse. But after hearing that recording, I realized something.””
Denise reached into her handbag.
She produced a small white envelope, its edges yellowed with age.
My father's name was written across the front in my mother's handwriting.
He took it with trembling fingers.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the storage unit. I kept it because I thought you deserved to have it.””
Dad turned the envelope over.
It had never been opened.
He carefully slid a finger beneath the flap.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
He unfolded it.
And as he read the first line, his face changed so dramatically that I grabbed his arm.
“What is it, Dad?””
He couldn't answer.
He read the line again.
Then he whispered my mother's name.
Because the letter began with a warning Elena had written years before she died.
Khalil, if anyone ever tries to use my name to take Ariana away from you, please remember what I told you about Richard Hale.
Dad looked up at me.
May you like
And suddenly, the wedding celebration was no longer the most frightening thing waiting in our future.
The letter suggested that Richard Hale had been part of our lives long before Tiffany ever entered our home.
