Chapter 2: The Footage That Changed Everything
“Let go of my hand, Vanessa.””
My father's voice was quiet.
That frightened me more than if he had shouted.
Vanessa released him immediately, then forced a nervous laugh.
“Marcus, you're making this into something it isn't. Lily is emotional. You know how she gets when things don't go her way.””
I stood beside the coffee table, holding the torn scholarship letter so tightly that the edges bent against my palms.
“I didn't tear it up, Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I know you're saying that, sweetheart. I just need to understand what's happening.””
Vanessa seized the opportunity.
“Exactly. And I can explain everything. Lily has been talking about leaving for months.
She doesn't want responsibilities. She thinks a scholarship makes her better than everyone else.””
Derek stood from the sofa, slipped his phone into his pocket, and joined her.
“She's always been obsessed with getting away from us.””
I stared at him.
“That's not true.””
“Then why are you always talking about how much better your life will be somewhere else?””
“Because I want to study!””
Derek rolled his eyes.
“Same thing.””
My father raised a hand.
“Enough. Both of you.””
He walked toward the cabinet beneath the television and opened the drawer where he kept the security system's tablet.
Vanessa followed him.
“Marcus, please. We have guests coming this weekend. Do we really need to turn this into a family investigation?””
He didn't look at her.
“If everything happened the way you said it did, the footage will settle it.””
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the cabinet.
“The camera has been unreliable lately.””
“You told me last month it was working perfectly.””
“I said the system was working. That doesn't mean every recording is clear.””
My father entered his password.
I watched the screen load.
For one awful second, I worried that the recording wouldn't be there. Vanessa had always known about the camera. She had insisted we install it after a package disappeared from the front porch.
If she had tampered with it, I had no other proof.
Then the screen displayed the living room.
The timestamp read 3:17 p.m.
I had been standing beside the coffee table, still wearing my school uniform, when Vanessa entered the frame.
The footage had no sound at first.
My father tapped the audio icon.
A moment later, Vanessa's voice filled the room.
“You don't need college.””
Then came the unmistakable sound of paper tearing.
My father stopped breathing for a second.
On the screen, I lunged forward to save the documents. Vanessa held them out of reach, laughing as I pleaded with her.
Derek appeared in the background, pointing at me and grinning.
My father's jaw tightened.
“Keep playing it,” he said.
Vanessa reached for the tablet.
“Marcus, that's enough.””
He pulled it away.
“No. It's not.””
The footage continued.
We watched Vanessa rip the scholarship letter into smaller pieces. We watched Derek kick one fragment beneath the sofa. We watched me kneel on the floor, desperately collecting what remained.
Then the recording captured the moment Vanessa looked toward the front door.
She straightened her clothes.
She wiped her hands.
And she said something that made my father go completely still.
“By the time Marcus gets home, we'll tell him she changed her mind. He'll be disappointed, but he'll get over it.””
Derek laughed.
“What if she tells him the truth?””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Then we'll remind him who pays the bills around here.””
Derek nodded.
“And if he believes her?””
Vanessa's answer came without hesitation.
“He won't. He never does.””
The room became painfully quiet.
My father replayed those final seconds.
Then he turned slowly toward Vanessa.
“Who pays the bills around here?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
“Marcus, I was angry. You know how teenagers can be. I was trying to make her understand—”
“You tore up her scholarship.””
“I was trying to protect this family!””
“From what? Her getting an education?””
“She'll leave! She'll go away to college, meet people who fill her head with ideas, and forget the people who raised her.””
My father stared at her.
“She earned a scholarship, Vanessa. That's something to celebrate.””
“Easy for you to say. You're not the one who has to keep this house running.””
“I work ten hours a day.””
“And I manage everything else!””
She gestured wildly toward the kitchen.
“Do you know how much I do for this family? Derek needs money. The mortgage needs paying.
Groceries don't magically appear. And now Lily expects us to applaud because she wants to disappear for four years?””
I wiped my face.
“The scholarship covers my tuition. I have a job. I've been saving for months.””
Vanessa snapped her head toward me.
“Be quiet.””
My father stepped between us.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Vanessa blinked as if she couldn't believe what she'd heard.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
For the first time, someone had challenged her without immediately apologizing.
I saw her search his face, looking for the familiar signs of hesitation. Usually, all she needed was a few tears or a reminder that she had sacrificed so much for our household.
But the footage kept playing in his hand.
And she knew it.
My father turned back to the screen.
“There's more, isn't there?””
My stomach dropped.
I hadn't expected him to notice.
He rewound the footage to a few minutes before Vanessa entered the living room. The camera showed her crossing the room with her phone pressed to her ear.
He turned up the volume.
Vanessa's recorded voice came through clearly.
“No, she hasn't signed anything yet,” she said.
“I'm handling it.””
A pause.
Then she continued.
“If the school sends another copy, I'll make sure she never sees it.””
My father slowly lowered the tablet.
“What school? What copy?””
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
“That's taken out of context.””
“Then give me the context.””
She looked at Derek.
He suddenly seemed very interested in the carpet.
My father replayed the recording.
Vanessa's voice came through again.
“I'm telling you, the money will be available. Once Lily gives up her place, we can finally use it for what it was meant for.””
I felt a chill crawl up my arms.
“What money?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What money are you talking about?””
She shook her head.
“You're misunderstanding.””
“Then explain it.””
“Marcus, please. Not in front of the children.””
“Lily is your stepdaughter, not a stranger. She has a right to know why you're destroying her future.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You want the truth? Fine. I've spent years watching you put her first.
Every birthday, every school award, every little achievement. Derek has needs, too!””
Derek looked up.
“Mom, leave me out of this.””
She rounded on him.
“Don't you dare abandon me now!””
My father placed the tablet on the coffee table.
“Both of you, sit down.””
Neither moved.
Then he said something that made Vanessa's expression collapse.
“I'm calling the university tomorrow. I'll request copies of every document they sent Lily, and I'll ask whether anyone contacted them on her behalf.””
Vanessa swallowed hard.
“You don't need to do that.””
“Why not?””
She looked at me.
For a split second, the kindness returned to her face, the same artificial softness she used whenever she wanted to manipulate a conversation.
“Lily, sweetheart. You don't want to ruin this family over one mistake, do you?””
I stared at her.
“One mistake?””
She reached toward me.
I stepped back.
“Don't.””
Her hand froze in midair.
My father moved closer to my side.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained sharp.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for this family.””
“Then why did you lie about me?”” I asked.
She said nothing.
My father picked up his phone.
“I'll make the call first thing tomorrow morning.””
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the coffee table and grabbed the tablet.
She pressed the screen, swiped through the menu, and opened the security settings.
“What are you doing?”” my father demanded.
She didn't answer.
A notification appeared.
*Recording deleted.*
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa had erased the footage from the system.
She held the tablet against her chest, breathing hard.
“There. It's over. Can we stop this now?””
My father looked at the blank screen.
For a moment, I thought she'd won.
Then he slowly reached into his briefcase and pulled out his work laptop.
“Vanessa,” he said, his voice colder than I'd ever heard it, “you just made a very serious mistake.””
She frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
My father opened a folder.
The security system had been configured to upload its recordings automatically to a separate cloud account he controlled.
He clicked a file dated that afternoon.
The video began playing again.
Vanessa stared at the screen in horror.
Then my father paused the recording at the exact moment her phone conversation began.
He leaned forward.
“Now, I want you to tell me who you were talking to about my daughter's scholarship money.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
May you like
And Derek, who had been silent for nearly a minute, suddenly whispered four words that made my blood run cold.
“Mom, tell him about Dad.””
