Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Father's Company

For the first time since I had known him, my father looked at his wife as though he were seeing a stranger.

Vanessa stood beside the dining table, clutching her phone with both hands. Patricia Wells had stopped writing. Even Mia, who had been watching from the staircase, seemed afraid to breathe.

"Explain what you just said," Dad demanded.

"What lawsuit?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Your former business partner. The one who left three years ago.""

"Michael Reeves?""

She nodded.

Dad let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Michael hasn't been involved with this company in years.""

"That's what you believe.""

"What exactly are you suggesting?""

Vanessa looked at Patricia, then back at Daniel.

"Richard found out that Michael was preparing a lawsuit against the company. He said there were documents that could make you personally liable for the losses from the warehouse project.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Michael signed the settlement agreement when he left. We settled every outstanding dispute.""

"Richard said there was another agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"I never saw the complete document.""

"Then how do you know it exists?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the refrigerator humming.

Finally, she reached into her handbag and produced a small black notebook.

"I wrote down what Richard told me.""

Dad didn't take it immediately.

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Michael?""

"Of what would happen if the lawsuit went through.""

Patricia held out her hand.

"May I see the notebook?""

Vanessa hesitated, then passed it to her.

Patricia opened it carefully. Several pages contained dates, amounts, and brief handwritten notes. Near the middle, one entry had been underlined twice.

*Warehouse claim — $180,000. Bridge funds needed before notice is served.*

Below it were three smaller entries.

*Vantage registration.*

*Daniel's authorization.*

*Emily — beneficiary documents.*

My stomach turned.

"Why is my name there?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

"Richard said the account needed an additional beneficiary to complete the application.""

"Why me?""

"I don't know.""

"You put my name on a financial document without asking me!""

"I thought it was just paperwork!""

"You thought?"" My voice rose.

"You changed my bank information, took my savings, and used my personal details for an account I didn't even know existed!""

Vanessa flinched.

Dad stepped between us.

"Emily, take a breath.""

I shook my head.

"No, Dad. She keeps saying she was trying to protect us. But every time we find something, there's another document with my name on it.""

My eyes burned.

"I don't want to be part of this anymore.""

Dad took my hand.

"You aren't responsible for any of it.""

Patricia closed the notebook.

"Vanessa, I need to be clear about something. Whatever Richard told you about a lawsuit, that does not authorize you to move company funds or use Emily's personal information. We need to establish what you knew, what you signed, and what you intended to do.""

Vanessa nodded weakly.

"I understand.""

"Do you? Because your actions may have exposed Daniel's company to substantial financial and legal consequences.""

Vanessa began to cry.

"I never wanted that.""

Dad looked at her without moving.

"Then why didn't you come to me?""

She stared at the floor.

"Because I knew you wouldn't listen.""

"That's your explanation?""

"You always think you can solve everything yourself. When I tried to explain that Richard had found something serious, you told me to stay out of company matters.""

"I told you to stay out of accounts you weren't authorized to manage.""

"And I thought I could fix it before you ever knew.""

Dad shook his head.

"You don't fix a problem by creating another one.""

Before Vanessa could answer, Patricia's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen and stepped away from the table.

"Yes, Mark?""

She listened for several seconds.

Then her expression changed.

"Are you certain?""

A pause.

"Send the documents to my secure email. Do not forward them anywhere else.""

She ended the call and returned to the table.

"Daniel, the bank has completed an initial review of the Vantage transfers.""

Dad stood.

"What did they find?""

"The thirty thousand dollars from your company was distributed among three accounts. One belongs to Vantage. One appears to be associated with a company registered under your name. The third received a transfer of twelve thousand dollars.""

"Who owns it?""

"The account holder is Michael Reeves.""

Dad went completely still.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked from one adult to another.

"Michael was Dad's business partner?""

"Former partner," Dad corrected quietly.

"Why would he be receiving the money?""

"That's what we need to find out.""

Patricia opened an email attachment on her laptop.

"The records suggest the money was moved through several accounts before reaching Michael. We don't yet know whether he received it knowingly, whether he believed it was a legitimate payment, or whether his account was used without his consent.""

Dad leaned over the screen.

"Can we contact him?""

"Not directly. If he's connected to a potential claim against your company, we need to be careful not to compromise the investigation.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"Richard told me Michael was demanding money.""

Everyone turned toward her.

"He said Michael had threatened to sue Daniel unless he received payment before the end of the month. Richard claimed the money was a temporary settlement advance.""

Dad stared at her.

"Did you see a letter from Michael?""

"No.""

"A lawsuit?""

"No.""

"An email from his attorney?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Then you had no evidence that any of this was true.""

"Richard showed me a document.""

"What document?""

"A letter saying Michael would file a claim if the company didn't pay him.""

"Where is it?""

Vanessa opened her handbag again, searching frantically through receipts and folded papers.

"I had a copy.""

She emptied the contents onto the table.

Lipstick. Keys. A wallet. Several receipts.

No letter.

"Richard took it back," she whispered.

Dad closed his eyes.

Patricia gathered the papers into a neat stack.

"We need to verify whether the letter was genuine. For now, nobody should contact Richard or Michael without legal advice.""

Mia appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned toward her daughter.

Mia was holding the silver MacBook.

"I need to show you something.""

Vanessa frowned.

"What?""

Mia placed the laptop on the table.

"Remember when you asked me to help you scan those documents last month?""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Not now, Mia.""

"You told me to save everything in a folder because you didn't want to lose it.""

"That was private.""

"I know.""

Mia opened the laptop.

Her fingers trembled as she navigated through several folders. Finally, she clicked one labeled *Household Admin*.

Inside were photographs of receipts, scanned forms, and several PDF files.

Dad leaned forward.

"Where did you get these?""

"They were on Mom's email. I saved copies when I was helping her organize the documents.""

Vanessa stepped toward the laptop.

"Mia, close that.""

"No.""

The single word surprised everyone, including Mia herself.

She swallowed and continued.

"I don't want to get in trouble because of something I didn't understand.""

She opened a PDF.

The document was an email exchange between Vanessa and Richard, dated five weeks earlier.

The first message was from Richard.

The company cannot risk another delay. Once the bridge funds arrive, Michael will receive his payment and the warehouse claim can be settled.

Vanessa had replied:

Daniel will never approve this if he knows where the money is going.

Richard's response came three minutes later.

Then don't ask him. Use the administrative authorization. You already have access.

Vanessa had written:

What about Emily's information?

Richard's reply was chillingly brief.

It makes the application stronger. We only need it temporarily.

Dad read the exchange twice.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"You knew they were using Emily's information.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"I didn't know they would use it for that account!""

"You asked about it in writing.""

"Richard told me it was a routine beneficiary requirement!""

Patricia copied the file details and instructed Mia not to alter the laptop or delete any messages.

Then she turned to Vanessa.

"These emails are important evidence. You need to preserve the original account and all related records.""

Vanessa sank into a chair.

"I thought I was stopping Michael from destroying Daniel's company.""

Dad's voice was painfully quiet.

"You were helping people move money through accounts using my identity and my daughter's information.""

"I thought the money would be returned!""

"And what about Emily's savings?""

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, she appeared ashamed.

Then she whispered, "I was going to replace it.""

"When?"" I asked.

"After you finished using my name?""

She didn't answer.

I stood and walked toward the stairs.

I couldn't bear to hear another explanation.

But before I reached the first step, Patricia called my father back to the table.

"Daniel, there's one more detail in this email chain.""

She enlarged the final message.

It had been sent by Richard the night before my savings disappeared.

Transfer the family funds first. Once Emily's account is cleared, Daniel will have to focus on the household problem before he starts examining the company records.

Dad's face went pale.

I felt my knees weaken.

The timing wasn't a coincidence.

My missing college fund hadn't simply been an unfortunate side effect of a financial scheme.

Someone had expected it to distract my father.

And when I looked at Vanessa, I realized she had known exactly when the first transfer would occur.

She had watched me work for eleven months.

She had known how much I'd saved.

And she'd taken it anyway.

Dad closed the laptop.

"Patricia, I want every document preserved. We're notifying the bank and reporting the suspected misuse of the accounts.""

Vanessa shot to her feet.

"Daniel, please!""

He didn't look at her.

"I will not let this continue.""

Her voice broke.

"If you do this, Richard will tell them everything!""

Dad finally turned toward her.

"Then perhaps it's time we heard the truth from someone who isn't trying to control what I know.""

Vanessa's phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A new message appeared.

*You have until midnight to return the documents. Otherwise, I tell Daniel what really happened at the warehouse.*

Vanessa began trembling.

Dad saw the message over her shoulder.

"What happened at the warehouse?""

She locked her phone.

"Nothing.""

He stared at her.

"Vanessa.""

She backed away from the table.

Then, with tears running down her face, she said the words that made my father stop moving.

"Richard wasn't trying to protect you from Michael's lawsuit.""

She looked at the laptop.

"He was trying to stop Michael from telling you what happened to the warehouse money in the first place.""

May you like

And suddenly, the mysterious contract, the stolen savings, and the missing company funds seemed connected by something far darker than a family argument.

Something that had begun years before I'd ever opened a bank account.
