Chapter 8: The Recording That Destroyed Her Story
Dad took me home after the meeting.
He didn't speak much during the drive.
At the first red light, he reached across and held my hand.
"Emily, I need you to remember something.""
I looked at him.
"You're not responsible for what Linda is doing.""
I nodded.
"Even if people ask questions?""
"Even then.""
"Even if they don't believe me?""
He swallowed.
"Especially then.""
I watched the traffic outside.
I wanted to ask whether the police would take me away.
But I was too frightened to say the words.
When we arrived, Ms. Reynolds was already waiting in the living room with another woman.
The woman introduced herself as Officer Daniels.
She wore a dark uniform and carried a small notebook.
"Hello, Emily.""
I hid behind Dad.
Officer Daniels smiled gently.
"You're not in trouble. I just want to understand what's happened.""
Dad asked whether I needed to stay.
Officer Daniels nodded.
"If Emily is comfortable, we'd like to hear her account. She can have you nearby.""
I sat beside him.
Officer Daniels opened her notebook.
"Emily, do you remember a time when Noah was in his crib and you were looking after him?""
I nodded.
"Many times.""
"Did you ever take him out and leave him alone?""
"No.""
"Did you ever hurt him?""
I shook my head.
"No. I love Noah.""
She nodded.
"That's important. Can you tell me about the recording?""
I stared at the floor.
"I don't know where it came from.""
"Do you remember saying those words?""
"No.""
Dad squeezed my hand.
Officer Daniels wrote something down.
"That's okay.""
Ms. Reynolds placed a printed transcript on the table.
"We received the audio file from Linda's phone. She claims it was recorded during an incident at home.""
Dad looked at the transcript.
"When?""
"According to Linda, approximately two weeks ago.""
Dad frowned.
"Emily was at school that morning.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He pulled out his phone.
"She returned to school on the day we met Mrs. Collins. Two weeks ago, she was still being kept home.""
He checked the date.
Then he looked at Ms. Reynolds.
"Actually, I have something.""
He opened a photograph.
It showed a school attendance confirmation email.
The date matched the alleged recording.
"Emily was with me at the factory that afternoon. My supervisor can confirm it.""
Officer Daniels examined the photograph.
"Do you have anything else?""
Dad nodded.
He opened another folder.
Inside were the documents Patricia had provided.
Then he placed a small black notebook on the table.
It was mine.
Officer Daniels looked at it.
"What's this?""
"Emily kept a diary of the days she was prevented from attending school.""
The officer turned several pages.
She stopped at an entry.
Today I went with Daddy to his work. He let me sit in the break room and draw pictures. Linda said I was wasting everyone's time.
Officer Daniels looked at the date.
Then at the recording transcript.
"That's useful.""
Dad nodded.
"But there's more.""
He opened his phone again.
"I called my supervisor this morning. He found the visitor log from that day.""
He showed them a photograph of the log.
My name was written beside Dad's.
Officer Daniels studied it.
Then she closed her notebook.
"We'll need to verify the recording independently.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Can someone create an audio recording like that?""
Officer Daniels answered carefully.
"Audio can be edited or taken out of context. We need the original file and the device it came from.""
Ms. Reynolds nodded.
"That's what I requested from Linda.""
Dad looked at me.
"Do you want some water, sweetheart?""
I nodded.
He went to the kitchen.
Officer Daniels waited until he returned before continuing.
"Emily, can I ask you one more question?""
I nodded.
"Did Linda ever ask you to say something into her phone?""
I thought.
Then I remembered.
One afternoon, Linda had been sitting on the couch with her phone.
She had asked me to repeat a sentence.
She said it was for a family video.
I had refused because I was doing homework.
But she had insisted.
"She asked me to say something once.""
Officer Daniels leaned forward.
"What did she ask you to say?""
I tried to remember.
"Something about being sorry.""
"What exactly?""
I closed my eyes.
Then the memory returned.
"She said, 'I didn't mean to hurt my brother.''"
Dad stopped moving.
Officer Daniels looked at him.
"Do you remember that?""
Dad shook his head.
I continued.
"She said it was just a practice video. I didn't want to say it.""
Officer Daniels wrote something down.
"Did you eventually say it?""
"No.""
Dad looked at me.
"Are you sure?""
I nodded.
"She got angry because I wouldn't.""
Officer Daniels closed her notebook.
"Thank you, Emily.""
That afternoon, Patricia arrived with a laptop.
She looked nervous.
"I think I found something.""
Dad invited her inside.
She opened the laptop on the dining table.
"Linda backed up some of her phone files to the family computer. I still have access to the old account because I helped her set it up.""
Dad frowned.
"Why were you looking?""
"Because I remembered something she told me.""
Patricia opened a folder.
There were dozens of audio files.
Most had ordinary names.
Shopping list.
Noah laughing.
Family video.
Then she clicked one titled:
Emily apology final.
The recording played.
Linda's voice came first.
"Say it again, Emily.""
My voice answered.
"I don't want to.""
"Just repeat what I told you.""
"No.""
"Emily, stop being difficult.""
Then a door slammed.
The recording ended.
Dad stared at the screen.
"That's not the same recording.""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. But look at the date.""
It was two days before the alleged incident.
Dad looked at Officer Daniels.
She had returned to collect additional information.
"Can you send this to me?"" she asked Patricia.
Patricia nodded.
Then she opened another file.
This one contained a conversation between Linda and an unidentified woman.
Linda's voice was unmistakable.
"Once Mark believes Emily is dangerous around Noah, he'll finally understand why she needs to live somewhere else.""
The other woman asked, "What if he doesn't believe you?""
Linda answered:
"Then I'll make sure he has no choice.""
Dad stood.
"Who is that woman?""
Patricia looked at the screen.
"I don't know.""
The conversation continued.
Linda spoke again.
"I've already prepared everything. The school letters. The medical report.
The guardianship papers. Once the recordings are included, nobody will question my decision.""
Dad's hands began trembling.
"She planned all of this.""
Patricia nodded.
"I think so.""
Officer Daniels requested a copy of the original files.
She also advised everyone not to alter or circulate them.
Then she made a phone call.
After several minutes, she returned.
"We've contacted the appropriate department. These materials will need to be examined.""
Dad asked:
"Can you stop Linda from taking Emily?""
Officer Daniels looked at him.
"Based on the information you've provided, we can take steps to address immediate safety concerns. But any formal restrictions will need to follow the proper process.""
Dad nodded.
That evening, Noah woke up crying.
I was sitting at the kitchen table doing spelling homework when I heard him.
Dad was upstairs, speaking with the officer on the telephone.
I stood.
Then I stopped.
For months, I had automatically run toward Noah whenever he cried.
I had been trained to believe that if I didn't go, something terrible would happen.
But now I remembered what Mrs. Collins had told me.
I was his sister.
Not his mother.
Dad came downstairs.
"Did you hear Noah?""
I nodded.
"Do you want to help me check on him?""
I smiled.
"Yes.""
We went upstairs together.
Dad picked Noah up and carried him toward the changing table.
I stood beside them.
Noah reached for my yellow sweater.
I laughed.
"Hi, little brother.""
Dad smiled.
For a few minutes, everything felt normal.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Dad went downstairs.
I heard a familiar voice.
"Mark, we need to talk.""
Linda.
Dad answered.
"You need to leave.""
"I just want to see my son.""
"We'll arrange that through the proper channels.""
"Don't you dare keep Noah from me!""
I stood at the top of the stairs.
Noah was in Dad's arms.
Linda's voice grew louder.
"You're letting that little girl destroy everything!""
Dad stepped into the hallway.
"Don't speak about Emily that way.""
Linda laughed.
"You're going to regret this.""
Then she lowered her voice.
"You think you're the only one with evidence?""
Dad went still.
"What does that mean?""
Linda looked toward the staircase.
Then she smiled.
"Ask your daughter what happened to her mother's jewelry.""
I felt my stomach drop.
Dad stared at her.
"What jewelry?""
Linda reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a small velvet pouch.
Then she opened it.
Inside was a gold necklace.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to my mother.
Dad's face went pale.
"Where did you get that?""
Linda smiled.
"Ask Emily.""
I began shaking my head.
"I didn't take it.""
Linda looked up at me.
"Really, sweetheart?""
May you like
Then she said the words that made my father turn toward me.
"Because I found it hidden beneath your mattress.""
