Chapter 7: The Retirement Party Trap
Dad canceled his retirement party three days before it was supposed to happen.
At least, that's what I thought.
Instead, he called the event planner and asked her to make one small change.
"Keep everything exactly as planned," he said.
"Same venue, same guest list, same decorations. But don't tell Vanessa I've changed anything.""
I stared at him from across the kitchen.
"Dad, are you serious? After everything she's done?""
He placed his phone on the counter.
"Especially after everything she's done.""
Rebecca, our attorney, sat beside him with a folder containing copies of the fraudulent documents.
"David, I understand why you want to expose them," she said.
"But we need to be careful. If Vanessa or Richard realizes we know about the plan, they may destroy evidence or disappear.""
Dad nodded.
"Then we won't give them a reason to suspect anything.""
I shook my head.
"What if they try to force us to sign?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Nobody can legally force you to sign a document. And you should not sign anything they present to you. We'll have the relevant authorities informed before the event.""
Dad reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
"You're not handling this alone anymore.""
For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
That evening, she returned home carrying several shopping bags.
She walked into the kitchen as though nothing had happened.
"David, darling, I need to talk to you about Friday.""
Dad didn't look up from his newspaper.
"What about it?""
"I've arranged something special for your retirement.""
"Have you?""
She smiled.
"Richard is helping me organize a little surprise.""
Dad folded the newspaper.
"Richard?""
"Yes. He's bringing some business associates. I thought it would be wonderful for you to meet them.""
Dad gave her a neutral smile.
"That's thoughtful.""
Vanessa studied his face.
"You don't sound excited.""
"I'm tired.""
She walked behind him and placed both hands on his shoulders.
"After everything we've been through, I want your retirement to be perfect.""
I nearly laughed.
After everything they'd been through?
She had stolen from him, forged his signature, and tried to take his house.
But I stayed quiet.
Vanessa glanced at me.
"Emily, I hope you're planning to behave yourself on Friday.""
I looked up from my phone.
"Why wouldn't I?""
"Because this is an important night for your father. I don't want any unnecessary drama.""
Dad lowered his newspaper.
"Then don't create any.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
She walked upstairs without another word.
Later that night, I heard her speaking on the phone.
I couldn't make out every sentence, but one phrase came through clearly.
"Friday is our last chance.""
I quietly opened the recording application on my phone.
Then I heard Richard's voice.
"Is David suspicious?""
Vanessa whispered.
"He suspects something, but he doesn't know the entire arrangement.""
"Make sure he signs the release.""
"What about Emily?""
Richard laughed.
"Bring her the settlement papers. Tell her the money is compensation for moving out.""
Vanessa hesitated.
"And if she refuses?""
"Then remind her what happens when people interfere with business they don't understand.""
I stopped recording.
My hands were shaking.
The next morning, Rebecca listened to the audio.
She immediately saved a copy.
"This is useful," she said.
"But we need the original recordings and the underlying financial evidence preserved. Don't confront them with it yet.""
Dad nodded.
"Friday.""
On Friday evening, the ballroom of the Grand Sterling Hotel glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.
More than eighty guests had arrived.
Former colleagues, business partners, friends, and relatives filled the room.
A large banner behind the stage read:
*CONGRATULATIONS, DAVID CARTER — 25 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE.*
Dad wore a dark blue suit.
I wore a simple black dress and the small silver earrings Mom had left me.
Her necklace was still missing.
I had searched everywhere.
Dad had promised we would get it back.
Vanessa arrived twenty minutes late.
She wore a sparkling champagne-colored gown and carried herself like the hostess of a royal wedding.
Richard followed her.
He wore the same navy suit I'd seen at our house.
When he spotted me, he smiled.
"Emily. Lovely to see you.""
I gave him a polite nod.
"Richard.""
He leaned closer.
"Your father looks happy tonight.""
"He's worked hard for this moment.""
"Yes. And soon he'll have the freedom to enjoy his investments.""
I looked directly at him.
"What investments?""
His smile tightened.
"Business matters. Nothing you need to worry about.""
Before I could answer, Vanessa appeared beside us.
"Emily, darling, could you help me with something?""
She led me toward a quiet corner near the ballroom entrance.
From her handbag, she removed a cream-colored envelope.
"These are the papers we discussed.""
I looked at it.
"We haven't discussed anything.""
She lowered her voice.
"Don't make this difficult.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a settlement agreement.
It claimed I would receive $50,000 in exchange for permanently surrendering any claim to the property and confirming that I had voluntarily moved out.
I stared at the document.
"This is the same fake payment you've already put in my name.""
Her smile vanished.
"Careful.""
"I never received this money.""
"Then consider it an opportunity to walk away.""
"Why are you so desperate to get me out of the house?""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Because you have never understood your place.""
I returned the papers to her.
"My place is beside my father.""
She grabbed my wrist.
"Your father has a new life. Stop dragging him backward.""
I pulled my hand away.
"You're the one trying to steal his future.""
Her face turned red.
"Keep your voice down.""
"Why? Afraid someone might hear the truth?""
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom.
Then she smiled.
It was the same smile she had worn whenever Dad was watching.
"Enjoy tonight, Emily. It may be the last time you stand in that house as an equal.""
She walked away.
I returned to Dad.
He was speaking with several former colleagues.
When he noticed my expression, he excused himself.
"Everything okay?""
I handed him the envelope.
He read the first page.
His jaw tightened.
"She actually gave this to you?""
"Yes.""
Dad looked toward the stage.
"Good.""
I frowned.
"Good?""
He nodded.
"She just gave us another piece of evidence.""
At precisely eight o'clock, Vanessa took the microphone.
"Good evening, everyone!""
The room quieted.
She smiled at the guests.
"Tonight is about celebrating an extraordinary man. A man whose dedication has provided stability, success, and security for everyone he loves.""
Dad stood beside the stage.
I noticed Richard watching him.
Vanessa continued.
"And tonight, David and I have a very special announcement.""
Dad looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca nodded once.
Vanessa opened a folder.
"We've been working on a property investment agreement that will secure our family's future.""
The guests began murmuring.
She turned toward Dad.
"David, darling, would you join me?""
Dad walked onto the stage.
Vanessa handed him a document and a pen.
"Just one final signature.""
Dad looked at the first page.
Then he lifted his eyes toward her.
"Before I sign anything, Vanessa, shouldn't we explain exactly what this agreement contains?""
Her smile faltered.
Richard moved closer to the stage.
"David, perhaps this is a conversation for later.""
Dad turned toward the audience.
"No. I think everyone should hear it.""
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the microphone.
"What are you doing?""
Dad took a breath.
"I'm about to show everyone what my wife has been doing behind my back.""
May you like
And then the ballroom doors opened.
Two police officers walked inside.
