Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Spotlight
The music stopped.
Every conversation in the ballroom died at once.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the microphone.
Richard immediately stepped away from the stage.
Dad placed the unsigned agreement on the table.
One of the officers approached.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes.""
"We need to speak with you regarding a complaint involving suspected financial fraud and identity misuse.""
Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.
"This is ridiculous!""
The officer turned toward her.
"Mrs. Carter, please remain where you are.""
She looked around at the guests.
"David, tell them this is a misunderstanding!""
Dad didn't move.
"I've spent three years believing everything you told me. I'm done doing that.""
Richard began walking toward the ballroom exit.
A second officer stepped in front of him.
"Sir, we'd like to speak with you as well.""
Richard raised both hands.
"There's been some mistake. I'm a businessman. I have nothing to do with this woman's family dispute.""
Dad opened his briefcase.
"Then perhaps you can explain these documents.""
He placed several copies on the table.
The first showed the transfers totaling $186,000.
The second showed the fraudulent refinance application.
The third contained the forged signatures.
And the fourth was the email exchange between Richard and Vanessa.
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
Vanessa grabbed the microphone.
"Those documents are private!""
Dad looked at her.
"Then you shouldn't have used them to steal from me.""
She dropped the microphone.
It struck the stage with a loud thud.
"David, please. Not here.""
"Where would you prefer? At home, where you slapped my daughter? Or in the office where you stole my documents?""
Several guests gasped.
Vanessa looked toward the audience.
"He's lying! Emily has been manipulating him for months!""
I stepped forward.
"No, Vanessa. You did this yourself.""
She pointed at me.
"You installed a camera in the house! You violated my privacy!""
Dad interrupted.
"The camera recorded you assaulting my daughter and demanding money from her. It also recorded you lying to me.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"David, I was under pressure. You don't understand what I've been dealing with.""
He looked at her.
"Then explain the $186,000.""
She said nothing.
"Explain Richard's account.""
Nothing.
"Explain the forged property documents.""
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
Richard suddenly spoke.
"David, this is a private investment dispute. Vanessa and I entered into a legitimate commercial agreement.""
Dad turned toward him.
"Then why did you create an account using my daughter's identity?""
Richard's expression changed.
"That's a serious allegation.""
Rebecca stepped onto the stage.
"And we have bank records, account access logs, and correspondence supporting it.""
She handed copies to the officers.
Richard's confidence began to disappear.
One officer examined the paperwork.
"Mr. Lawson, we'll need you to accompany us for questioning.""
Richard shook his head.
"I am not going anywhere until my attorney arrives.""
"That's your right. But we'd like you to remain available.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Dad's arm.
"Please. We can talk about this at home.""
He gently removed her hand.
"There is nothing left to discuss.""
Her face crumpled.
"What about our marriage?""
Dad stared at her for several seconds.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"You destroyed this marriage the moment you decided my daughter was an obstacle to your financial plans.""
Vanessa began crying.
Not the controlled tears she usually used to win sympathy.
These were angry, desperate tears.
She turned toward the guests.
"Does nobody understand what I've sacrificed? I gave up my entire life to support David!""
A woman near the front shook her head.
It was Margaret, Dad's former colleague.
"Vanessa, I remember David telling us he paid for the entire renovation. You never mentioned any investment.""
Another guest spoke.
"I thought the house belonged to David before you married.""
"It does!"" Vanessa shouted.
The words escaped before she could stop herself.
The ballroom went silent.
Dad stared at her.
"Then why did you tell everyone you owned half of it?""
Vanessa looked around helplessly.
Richard leaned toward her.
"Stop talking.""
She spun toward him.
"You told me the paperwork was valid!""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Don't put this on me.""
"You said the lender had approved everything!""
"I said we were close!""
"You promised me the house would be transferred!""
The guests began whispering louder.
The officer stepped between them.
"Both of you, please calm down.""
Vanessa looked at Dad again.
"David, I did all of this because I wanted security. You were going to retire. You were going to spend all your time with Emily. I knew there would be nothing left for me.""
Dad's face changed.
"So you decided to take everything?""
"I deserved something!""
"You had a home. You had a husband. You had access to our finances. What more did you want?""
She pointed at me.
"Everything changed when she refused to leave!""
I felt my heart pounding.
Dad stepped forward.
"Don't blame Emily for your decisions.""
Vanessa suddenly looked at the officers.
"I want a lawyer.""
"That's your right," one replied.
Rebecca approached Dad.
"David, there's something else you should know.""
He turned.
"What?""
She held up a separate document.
"The lender has confirmed that the retirement property release was never processed. The transaction was stopped after we reported the suspected fraud.""
Dad exhaled.
"Good.""
But Rebecca didn't smile.
"There's also a witness statement from a former employee of Lawson Property Holdings.""
Richard's head snapped toward her.
"What witness statement?""
Rebecca looked at him.
"Someone who claims to have helped prepare the fraudulent documents.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Who?""
Rebecca opened the folder.
Before she could answer, a woman walked into the ballroom.
She looked nervous.
She wore a simple gray cardigan and held a large brown envelope.
Vanessa recognized her immediately.
Her face went completely white.
"You're not supposed to be here.""
The woman looked at her.
"I'm sorry, Vanessa.""
Then she turned toward Dad.
"My name is Jessica Miller. I worked as Richard Lawson's administrative assistant.""
Richard's expression turned furious.
"Jessica, don't say another word.""
She ignored him.
"I helped prepare the property documents. Vanessa told me the signatures were authorized.""
Dad stepped closer.
"Why are you coming forward now?""
Jessica opened the envelope.
"Because I discovered something in the original files that neither of them knows I've kept.""
She removed a printed document and handed it to Rebecca.
Rebecca examined it.
Then she looked at Dad.
"David, this changes everything.""
Dad frowned.
"What is it?""
Rebecca turned the document around.
It was a copy of a contract dated three years earlier.
The date was just before Vanessa married Dad.
And beneath the heading was a name I had never expected to see.
*Richard Lawson.*
Jessica swallowed.
"Vanessa didn't meet Richard after she married your father.""
May you like
She looked directly at me.
"They had been planning this long before the wedding.""
