Chapter 2: The Name on the Bank Account

I unlocked the door just enough to see Caleb's face.

His hair was messy, his T-shirt was inside out, and he kept looking over his shoulder toward the dark hallway.

“What's wrong?”” I whispered.

He slipped inside and shut the door carefully.

“Did you get a text?””

I stared at him.

“How do you know about that?””

His face drained of color.

“So you did.””

“Caleb, what is going on?””

He pressed both hands against his forehead.

“I shouldn't have come here.””

“Then why did you?””

“Because Jordan says you're going to ruin everything.””

I stepped away from the door.

“Ruin what?””

Caleb looked at my suitcase, then at the framed photograph on my nightstand. It showed Mom and me standing ankle-deep in turquoise water, both of us laughing at something the camera hadn't captured.

His eyes lingered on it.

“I know you wanted to go,” he said quietly.

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“I know.””

“Then start talking.””

He opened his mouth.

A sharp knock sounded from the hallway.

“Caleb?”” Vanessa called.

“Are you in there?””

My stepbrother flinched so hard that his shoulder struck the wardrobe.

“Answer me, sweetheart.””

Caleb looked at me desperately.

“Don't tell her I came here.””

The doorknob rattled.

“Caleb, your brother is looking for you.””

He swallowed.

“I'm going to the bathroom,” he called.

“Then why are you in Maya's room?””

Neither of us answered.

The silence stretched.

Finally, Vanessa spoke again, her voice suddenly sweet.

“Maya, darling, open the door.””

I didn't move.

“I need to speak with my son.””

Caleb mouthed, Please.

I turned the lock.

Vanessa stood in the hallway wearing a silk robe, her blonde hair arranged neatly despite the late hour. Her eyes swept over me before settling on Caleb.

“There you are,” she said.

Caleb stepped toward her.

“Mom, I was just—”

“Helping Maya pack?”” Vanessa interrupted.

“No.””

“Then perhaps you can explain why you're hiding in her bedroom.””

“I'm not hiding.””

Vanessa smiled, but there was no warmth in it.

“Of course not. Come downstairs. Your brother wants to talk to you.””

Caleb looked at me one last time before following her.

As they disappeared down the hallway, Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

“And Maya?””

I met her eyes.

“Don't let one canceled vacation turn you against your family.””

Then she walked away.

I shut the door and locked it.

My phone still displayed the anonymous message.

Don't let him check the account under Jordan's name.

I had no idea who'd sent it, but one thing was clear: someone in this house knew more than they were willing to admit.

I barely slept.

At seven the next morning, the mansion smelled of coffee, buttered toast, and the expensive perfume Vanessa wore whenever she wanted people to believe everything was under control.

The family gathered in the breakfast room.

Jordan sat at the head of the table, scrolling through his phone. Caleb pushed scrambled eggs around his plate. Vanessa reviewed a printed itinerary while speaking to the driver on speakerphone.

Dad entered carrying his laptop and a folder of documents.

“Before anyone leaves,” he announced, “we're going to settle something.””

Vanessa lowered her coffee cup.

“David, we already discussed this.””

“No. You discussed it. I listened.””

Jordan groaned.

“Dad, our flight is in three hours.””

“Then I suggest we make good use of the next ten minutes.””

Dad placed the folder on the table.

“The airline confirmed the cancellation was made using the credentials for my account. The refund was redirected through a linked payment service to an account I don't recognize.””

Vanessa folded her itinerary.

“And the airline couldn't have made a mistake?””

“They're investigating. Meanwhile, I requested the login history.””

He opened the folder and removed a printed page.

“The account was accessed at 8:41 p.m. from a device using our home network.””

Jordan set down his phone.

“Lots of devices use our Wi-Fi.””

“Correct. Which is why I want everyone to tell me whether they accessed my travel account yesterday.””

“I didn't,” Jordan said immediately.

Dad turned to Caleb.

“Did you?””

Caleb's fork scraped against his plate.

“No.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“This is getting out of hand. The boys have nothing to do with it.””

“I didn't ask you.””

Her lips pressed together.

Dad looked at me.

“Maya, did you use my laptop last night?””

“No, Dad.””

“I believe you.””

The simplicity of those three words nearly broke me.

For years, I'd learned to explain myself before anyone accused me of anything. If a glass went missing, Vanessa asked whether I'd broken it. If Jordan lost his headphones, he claimed I'd borrowed them. If Caleb got into trouble, Vanessa somehow found a way to make my presence relevant.

But Dad had believed me without demanding proof.

He turned back to the others.

“Jordan, I need your phone and laptop available for the account investigation.””

Jordan shot to his feet.

“Absolutely not.””

“Excuse me?””

“You can't just take my stuff because Maya didn't get her vacation.””

“I'm not taking anything. I'm asking you to cooperate.””

“Why don't you ask Vanessa? She was the one who said Maya shouldn't go.””

Vanessa's head snapped toward him.

“Jordan!””

“What? It's true!””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa, did you cancel Maya's ticket?””

“I made a decision about the trip.””

“That's not an answer.””

“She wasn't going to enjoy herself if she stayed home worrying about her mother's memory.””

I stared at her.

She had actually said it.

Dad's chair scraped backward.

“Don't you dare use her mother as an excuse for what happened.””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“I was trying to be practical!””

“Practical would have been asking me before canceling my daughter's ticket.””

Jordan grabbed his phone.

“This is insane. I'm going upstairs.””

“Sit down,” Dad ordered.

Jordan hesitated, then dropped back into his chair.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I've asked the bank to trace the refund. They may need to speak with anyone whose name appears in the transaction records.””

Vanessa went still.

“Whose name?””

“I don't know yet.””

Her gaze flicked toward Jordan.

It was quick, almost invisible.

But this time I caught it.

So did Dad.

“Why do you keep looking at your oldest son?”” he asked.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Because you're interrogating him in front of everyone!””

“Then he should have nothing to worry about.””

Jordan's face had gone pale.

“I didn't steal anything.””

Nobody had used the word steal until that moment.

Caleb slowly raised his eyes from his plate.

“Mom,” he whispered, “maybe you should just tell him.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Tell him what?””

Caleb's mouth closed.

Dad stood.

“That's enough. Nobody leaves until I understand what's happened.””

Vanessa shoved her chair back.

“You cannot hold us hostage over a refund!””

“I'm not holding anyone hostage. I'm asking why my daughter's ticket was canceled and where her money went.””

“Her money?”” Vanessa repeated.

Dad stared at her.

“The refund came from my payment method. It belongs to me, and the trip was for Maya. Either way, somebody deliberately redirected it.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You're choosing her over the rest of us.””

“I'm choosing the truth.””

For a moment, I thought she might slap him.

Instead, she picked up her itinerary and tore it in half.

“You'll regret making this family choose sides,” she said.

She swept from the room, leaving the torn paper scattered across the floor.

Jordan followed her.

Caleb remained seated, staring at his untouched breakfast.

When Dad approached him, the fourteen-year-old shook his head.

“I can't.””

“Can't what, son?””

Caleb looked toward the doorway where Vanessa had disappeared.

“If I tell you, she'll say I made everything up.””

“Who will?””

Caleb's eyes filled with tears.

Before he could answer, Dad's phone rang.

He put it on speaker.

“David Bennett,” he said.

A woman's professional voice came through.

“Mr. Bennett, this is Rachel from the bank's fraud investigation team. We've located the destination account connected to the refund.””

Dad gripped the edge of the table.

“Whose account is it?””

There was a pause as the woman checked her records.

“The account is registered to Jordan Bennett.””

My stomach dropped.

Dad looked toward the stairs.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“Does the account show any other transactions?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Yes, sir. And the refund is not the largest payment we've flagged.””

Dad's face went rigid.

“What do you mean?””

“The account has received several transfers over the past six months. Based on the information available, some may be connected to your personal financial records.””

Caleb covered his mouth.

I stared at the staircase, where Jordan had vanished only moments earlier.

The plane ticket had been worth less than a thousand dollars.

So what had been happening in our house for six months?

And why did Vanessa look more frightened of the answer than the person whose name was on the account?
