Chapter 7: The Woman in Angela's Photograph
I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.
Angela and Denise stood beside each other in a hospital corridor, smiling as if they were old friends.
Six weeks before my wife died.
Six weeks before Denise supposedly entered my life by coincidence.
Six weeks before I believed I had met a woman who understood my grief.
I turned the photograph over again.
*If anything happens to me, protect Malik from her.*
My wife's handwriting was unmistakable.
I had seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, anniversary notes, and the little messages she used to leave inside my lunch bag.
But I had never seen those words.
"Patricia," I said slowly, "why didn't you show me this before?""
She looked uncomfortable.
"Kayla only gave it to me yesterday. She found it inside an old folder in Denise's bedroom.""
"Why would Denise keep this?""
"I don't know.""
I placed the photograph on the table.
"Tell me everything you know about Angela and your sister.""
Patricia took a deep breath.
"Denise and Angela knew each other through a neighborhood family-support organization. Denise volunteered there for a while. Angela was involved in organizing donations and helping families who needed temporary assistance.""
I frowned.
"Angela never mentioned Denise.""
"Maybe she didn't want you involved.""
"Why?""
Patricia looked down.
"Because Denise had a reputation for getting close to people who had something she wanted.""
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
"Money. Opportunities. Connections. She was very good at making people feel needed.""
I thought about the beginning of my relationship with Denise.
How she appeared at the right time.
How she always knew what to say.
How quickly she became involved in every part of my life.
"Did Angela ever have a problem with her?""
Patricia nodded.
"According to Denise, they had an argument about a financial arrangement. I never knew the details.""
I leaned forward.
"What arrangement?""
"That's what I hoped you could find out.""
I took the photograph and placed it inside my jacket.
Before leaving, Patricia gave me the memory card.
She had spoken with a child-protection professional and was willing to provide the original recording through the appropriate channels.
I thanked her.
Then I drove straight to Raymond's house.
My brother was waiting in the kitchen.
He took one look at my face.
"You saw the photograph.""
I put it on the table.
"Why didn't you tell me Angela knew Denise?""
Raymond stared at it.
"Because Angela asked me not to.""
"Why?""
"She said Denise had approached her about something involving money. Angela didn't want you getting involved because she thought Denise might use your relationship with her to get access to the family.""
I pulled out a chair.
"What money?""
Raymond opened the metal box and removed another document.
It was a copy of a financial agreement.
The date was nearly four years old.
Angela had been listed as the administrator of a small charitable fund created to support children whose parents had died.
Denise's name appeared near the bottom.
I read the document twice.
"Why is Denise listed?""
"She applied for assistance through the organization. Her former husband had died, and she was struggling financially.""
I looked up.
"Denise's former husband?""
Raymond nodded.
"Kayla's biological father.""
I remembered Denise telling me he had abandoned them.
She had said he was unreliable and wanted nothing to do with his daughter.
"Angela helped her?""
"She tried. But there was a problem with the application. Some of the financial information didn't match.""
"What information?""
"Denise claimed she had no other financial support, but Angela discovered that Denise had been receiving money from another source.""
I stared at him.
"What source?""
Raymond shook his head.
"Angela never told me.""
I looked down at the document again.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Application suspended pending verification.
Suddenly, the hospital photograph made sense.
Angela hadn't been visiting Denise.
She had been investigating something.
"Did Angela ever tell you why she was afraid?""
Raymond hesitated.
"She told me Denise had started contacting her privately. She wanted Angela to reverse the decision and approve the money.""
"And Angela refused?""
"Yes.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Then what happened?""
"Denise threatened to expose something about Angela.""
My head snapped up.
"What?""
Raymond shook his head.
"I don't know. Angela wouldn't tell me.""
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Raymond said something that changed everything.
"Marcus, there's another reason I think Denise married you.""
I stared at him.
"Go on.""
"Angela had a life-insurance policy. It wasn't enormous, but it was enough to help raise Malik if something happened to her.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"How much?""
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
I sat back.
"Did Denise know?""
Raymond nodded.
"Angela told her about the policy during one of their conversations. She thought Denise was helping her arrange paperwork.""
"Who was the beneficiary?""
"Malik.""
I looked down.
"Then Denise couldn't have taken it.""
"Not directly. But she could have tried to influence how the money was managed.""
I stood.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this three years ago?""
Raymond's eyes filled.
"Because I was trying to respect Angela's wishes. And because I thought Denise had moved on.""
I stared at my brother.
"You let me bring her into my home.""
"I know.""
"You let her raise my son.""
"I know, Marcus.""
His voice broke.
"I made a mistake.""
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I picked up the documents.
"We're getting everything reviewed. The bank records, the old phone records, the insurance paperwork. All of it.""
Raymond nodded.
Then he pointed toward the staircase.
"There's something else you should know.""
"What?""
"Malik told me something last night.""
I turned.
"He said Kayla had been trying to give him something for weeks. He thought it was another threat.""
"What was it?""
Raymond reached into his pocket and placed a small brass key on the table.
My breath caught.
The silver key.
The one that had disappeared from my desk.
"Where did you get that?""
"Malik found it inside his backpack. He said Kayla slipped it into his pocket at school.""
I picked it up.
My fingers trembled.
"Why would she give it back?""
Raymond looked toward the stairs.
"Because I think Kayla is finally ready to tell the truth.""
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was Patricia.
"Marcus," she said urgently.
"You need to come here.""
"What happened?""
"Kayla is with me.""
"Is she okay?""
"Physically, yes. But she just told me something about the hospital photograph.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"What?""
Patricia's voice dropped.
"Denise didn't meet Angela by accident. Angela was trying to help Kayla get away from her mother.""
I stopped breathing.
"Why would Angela do that?""
Patricia began crying.
"Because Denise had been hurting her own daughter long before she started hurting Malik.""
Then I heard a small voice in the background.
It was Kayla.
May you like
And she was saying something I never expected to hear.
"Mr. Marcus, please don't let my mother take me home.""
