Chapter 4: The First Accusation

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Mrs. Collins remained quiet on the other end of the phone.

I looked at Malik through the diner window. He was stirring his orange juice with a straw, watching the ice cubes move around the glass.

My son looked so small.

"Mrs. Collins," I finally said, "what exactly are you telling me?""

"I'm telling you that last year, another student made a report involving Kayla. The allegation was that Malik had behaved inappropriately toward her.""

My stomach tightened.

"That's impossible. Malik was twelve.""

"I understand your reaction, Mr. Reed. But the report was investigated by the appropriate school personnel. We couldn't establish what happened.""

"Who made the report?""

"Denise.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did Malik ever get interviewed?""

"Yes. He denied the allegation. Kayla also spoke with school staff, but her account wasn't consistent.""

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Denise was listed as the primary contact at the time. She told the school you were aware of the situation and that the family was handling it privately.""

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"She told you I knew?""

"Yes.""

"I knew absolutely nothing.""

There was another pause.

"Then I think you need to come in and speak with the principal. We also need to discuss the concerns Malik has raised recently.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

When I returned to the table, Malik looked up.

"Was it about me?""

I sat opposite him.

"Yes, buddy.""

His fingers tightened around the straw.

"She's doing it again, isn't she?""

"Who?""

"Denise.""

I leaned forward.

"What happened last year?""

He stared at the table for a long time.

Then he spoke.

"Kayla said I touched her.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Did you?""

"No, Dad.""

His voice cracked.

"She said I went into her room while she was changing. But I was downstairs. I was playing video games with Uncle Raymond.""

"Did anyone ask Raymond?""

Malik nodded.

"He told Denise he remembered. But she said he was lying because he wanted you to believe me.""

I sat back.

The pieces were beginning to fit together, but I still didn't understand why Denise would go so far to hurt a thirteen-year-old.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Malik looked at me with exhausted eyes.

"She said if I told you, she'd say it happened again. She said nobody would believe me because Kayla was younger.""

I reached across the table and held his hand.

"Listen to me. You are not responsible for what Denise says or does. And you don't have to investigate this yourself. The adults are going to handle it.""

He nodded, but I could tell he wasn't convinced.

When we arrived home, Denise was waiting in the driveway.

Her arms were crossed.

Kayla stood behind her.

"Where have you been?"" Denise demanded.

"Getting breakfast.""

"You took him to breakfast after everything he did?""

I unlocked the front door.

"Not here, Denise.""

"No. We're talking now.""

She stepped in front of me.

"Kayla has been crying all morning. She says Malik threatened her again.""

I looked at Kayla.

"Is that true?""

The girl glanced at her mother.

Then she shook her head.

Denise's face changed.

"Kayla, don't be afraid. Tell your father what happened.""

I frowned.

"Her father?""

Denise immediately corrected herself.

"Tell Marcus.""

I caught the slip, but I didn't comment.

Instead, I asked, "Why did you tell the school I knew about an allegation against Malik last year?""

Denise froze.

For the first time since I'd met her, she seemed to have no immediate answer.

Then she laughed.

"You're seriously questioning me based on something a counselor said?""

"Did you report Malik for hurting Kayla last year?""

"I was protecting my daughter.""

"Did you tell the school I knew?""

She looked away.

"That's not the point.""

"It is exactly the point.""

Denise stepped closer.

"Marcus, your son has been targeting Kayla for months. I tried to handle it privately because I didn't want to destroy the family.""

"By accusing him of something I wasn't even told about?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"You're making a huge mistake.""

I walked past her.

"Where's the silver key?""

She stopped.

"What?""

"The key to Angela's keepsake box.""

Denise's mouth tightened.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then you won't mind if I check the bedrooms.""

"Absolutely not!""

Her sudden reaction told me more than her denial.

I turned toward Kayla.

"Did you take anything from my bedroom?""

The girl looked frightened.

Denise immediately stepped between us.

"Stop questioning my daughter!""

I raised my hands.

"Fine. Then we'll let the proper people ask.""

Denise stared at me.

"What people?""

"The school. And anyone else who needs to know.""

Her expression hardened.

"You wouldn't dare.""

I didn't answer.

That afternoon, I contacted an attorney and arranged to stay with Malik at my brother Raymond's house. I also documented what Malik had told me, photographed the injuries, and requested guidance on the proper reporting process.

I wasn't going to make another mistake by confronting Denise alone.

At six, Raymond arrived with his SUV.

He was forty-two, broad-shouldered, and had known Malik since the day he was born.

When he saw the bruises on Malik's arm, his face changed.

"Who did this?""

Malik looked down.

I placed a hand on Raymond's shoulder.

"We're going to handle it carefully.""

Raymond nodded, but his jaw remained clenched.

Before we left, I returned to the bedroom to collect some clothes.

Denise stood in the doorway.

"You can't take my daughter away from her home.""

"I'm taking my son somewhere he feels safe.""

She folded her arms.

"And what about me?""

I looked at her.

"Right now, Denise, I don't know who you are.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered something I hadn't expected.

"Ask your brother what happened at the hospital before Angela died.""

I stopped.

"What?""

Denise gave a bitter smile.

"That's right. You don't know everything about your perfect wife either.""

I stepped toward her.

"What does Angela have to do with this?""

She shrugged.

"Maybe you should ask Raymond why he never told you about the money she left behind.""

My blood went cold.

"Don't bring my wife into this.""

"Ask him, Marcus.""

She moved aside.

"Ask your brother what he knows about Malik's mother.""

I walked out without answering.

But as Raymond drove us away, I kept hearing Denise's words.

Because there was one thing I knew for certain.

May you like

My brother had been with Angela during her final days.

And if Denise was telling the truth about him hiding something, then the secrets in my house were much older than I had imagined.
