Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Curtain

"Emily.""

The name echoed through the empty theater.

Theo stood so abruptly that his chair scraped against the wooden floor.

"What did he just say?""

Grace didn't answer.

On the screen, Jack shifted against his hospital pillows. He looked tired, but his eyes were bright.

"Okay, Theo. Before you freak out, I need you to listen.""

Theo stepped closer to the screen.

"Jack, what did you do?""

Jack smiled.

"That's exactly what you always say when I have a good idea.""

Despite everything, I laughed through my tears.

Daniel pulled a chair beside me.

On the recording, Jack continued.

"You've spent years telling me stories about Emily. You told me about her laugh, her terrible singing, and how she used to make you wear ridiculous costumes when you were little.""

Theo covered his mouth.

"But there's one story you never told me completely.""

Jack paused.

"The story about the last performance she gave before she died.""

Theo's face changed.

I watched him carefully.

"What story?"" Daniel asked.

Theo shook his head.

"Nothing. It's just something from when we were kids.""

But his voice was trembling.

Jack's recording continued.

"I found something, Theo. Something your mom kept. And I think you deserve to see it.""

Grace walked toward the back of the stage.

"Jack asked me to prepare this.""

She opened a small storage cupboard and removed a battered cardboard box.

Written across the top in black marker were the words:

*EMILY BENNETT — PERSONAL BELONGINGS.*

Theo stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your mother brought it here last month," Grace explained.

"She wanted us to preserve Emily's things for the memorial.""

Theo took a step backward.

"My mother gave you that?""

Grace nodded.

"She told me Jack had asked her to.""

Theo shook his head.

"She never told me.""

"She was following his instructions.""

Grace placed the box on a table.

Inside were photographs, old programs, newspaper clippings, and a pair of worn ballet shoes.

Theo picked up a photograph.

A young woman with long dark hair stood on the theater stage, wearing a bright red dress.

She was holding the hand of a little boy.

Theo.

He couldn't have been more than five.

"That's the dress," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"The one you're wearing?""

He nodded.

"Emily wore it during her final performance here.""

He ran his fingers over the photograph.

"I thought Mom donated everything after the accident.""

Grace shook her head.

"She kept it all.""

Theo found an old theater program at the bottom of the box.

He opened it.

His eyes moved across the printed names until he stopped.

Then he sat down.

"She was supposed to perform again," he whispered.

"What do you mean?"" I asked.

Theo swallowed.

"Emily was offered a place in a performing arts program in New York. She was going to leave home after graduation. But she died three weeks before she was supposed to go.""

His voice cracked.

"She never got to say goodbye to anyone.""

Jack's recording suddenly resumed.

"Here's the part I need you to understand, Theo. Emily didn't stop being part of your story just because hers ended early.""

Theo looked at the screen.

Jack smiled.

"I think she'd be proud of you. I know I am.""

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Grace walked toward a small table beside the stage.

"There is something else in the box.""

She removed a folded sheet of paper.

It was a letter.

The handwriting was different from Jack's.

Older.

More elegant.

At the top was a date from seventeen years earlier.

Theo recognized it immediately.

"My sister wrote that.""

He unfolded the paper.

His eyes moved across the first few lines.

Then he stopped.

His face drained of color.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

"I can't.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Take your time, son.""

Theo looked at him.

Then, slowly, he began reading.

My little Theo,

If you're reading this one day, I hope you've grown into someone who isn't afraid of being different.

I know you love watching me perform, even when you pretend you're only there because Mom makes you come.

A small smile appeared on Theo's face.

I want you to know something. When I wear this red dress, I feel like the whole world is looking at me. But when I look into the audience and see you smiling, I don't feel scared anymore.

Theo stopped.

His hands were shaking.

He continued.

One day, I hope you find something that makes you feel the same way. Something that makes you forget to be afraid.

And if people laugh, let them.

You were never born to spend your life hiding.

Love you forever, little brother.

Emily.

Theo pressed the letter against his face.

A sob escaped him.

I moved toward him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

He cried like a little boy.

Not quietly.

Not politely.

He cried with the grief of someone who had spent seventeen years pretending he had learned how to live without a person he desperately missed.

Daniel knelt beside him.

"She loved you very much.""

Theo nodded.

"I know.""

He wiped his face.

"But I never got to tell her I remembered.""

I held his hand.

"You just did.""

For a moment, I thought that was the secret Jack had wanted us to discover.

But Grace was still standing beside the cabinet.

She looked nervous.

"Jack told me there was one final part of the surprise.""

Theo looked up.

"What?""

Grace reached into the box and removed a small silver key.

"Your son asked me to open the old dressing room.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

Grace glanced toward the narrow hallway behind the stage.

"Because someone has been waiting there.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who?""

Grace didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the hallway.

We followed.

At the end was a faded wooden door with a small brass plaque.

*EMILY BENNETT — DRESSING ROOM.*

Grace inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

She pushed the door open.

And standing beside the mirror, holding a photograph of Emily, was a woman with silver-streaked hair.

Theo froze.

"Mom?""

Linda Bennett turned around.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Hello, sweetheart.""

Theo stared at her.

"Why are you here?""

Linda approached him slowly.

"Because Jack asked me to be.""

She looked at the red dress.

May you like

Then she whispered something that made Theo's face collapse.

"There's something your sister told me before she died. Something I've never had the courage to tell you.""
