Chapter 7: The Voice That Exposed Everything

"Your father wasn't the man who raised you. And the man standing in that room with you right now knows exactly why.""

The woman's words echoed through Daniel's phone.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Patricia Cole. I was a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital when you were born.""

Arthur Collins stepped closer.

"Ms. Cole, this is Arthur Collins, the attorney representing the Whitmore family. Can you confirm your identity?""

"Yes. I've been waiting twenty-nine years for someone to ask me that question.""

Daniel swallowed.

"What did you mean by my father?""

There was a long silence.

Then Patricia answered.

"Robert Whitmore was your legal and biological father. But the man who arranged the hospital incident was someone else. Someone who wanted Robert to believe his family was in danger.""

Richard suddenly turned toward the exit.

One of the security officers blocked his path.

"Sir, please remain here.""

Richard pointed at Daniel.

"This is a private family matter. You have no authority to detain me.""

Arthur remained calm.

"Nobody is detaining you. But I strongly advise you not to leave before we understand why your name appears in a historical medical investigation.""

Patricia's voice came through again.

"Is Richard Reed there?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes.""

"Then I need to tell you something. He wasn't the only person involved.""

Richard laughed.

"This woman is a liar.""

Patricia continued.

"Mr. Reed, I kept the original records. I also kept the recording you made in the hospital corridor.""

Richard's face changed.

I noticed it immediately.

He wasn't confused.

He was frightened.

Daniel raised the phone.

"What recording?""

Patricia took a shaky breath.

"Before you were born, Richard came to the hospital several times. He was asking questions about your parents' medical records. He told the staff he was a close family friend.""

Richard interrupted.

"That's nonsense.""

"He offered money to a records clerk. He wanted information about Robert's estate and the inheritance provisions being prepared for you.""

Arthur looked at Richard.

"Why would you be interested in an unborn child's inheritance?""

Richard said nothing.

Patricia continued.

"After Daniel was born, I was instructed to place a temporary identification bracelet on the wrong bassinet. I refused. But another nurse was pressured into doing it.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Did you know which baby was mine?"" I asked.

"Yes, Margaret. I did.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Her voice broke.

"Because Richard threatened to make sure I never saw my own children again.""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Vanessa looked at her father.

"You threatened a nurse?""

Richard shook his head.

"Don't listen to these people. They're inventing a story.""

Patricia spoke again.

"I have proof.""

Arthur leaned toward the phone.

"What proof?""

"A recording of Richard speaking to another man. They discussed the hospital records, the trust, and what would happen if Robert discovered the truth.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Who was the other man?""

Patricia hesitated.

"Your biological father.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Robert was my biological father. Arthur already told me the test confirmed it.""

"Yes. Robert was. That's why the plan failed.""

The room fell silent.

Patricia continued.

"The other man wasn't trying to replace Robert as your biological father. He wanted to make sure Robert would never know that the hospital records had been manipulated.""

Arthur looked at the photograph again.

"Are you saying the baby switch was intended to conceal a different crime?""

"Yes.""

I felt my heart beating in my ears.

"What crime?""

Patricia's answer came slowly.

"An attempted abduction.""

Daniel stepped closer to the phone.

"Whose?""

"Yours.""

I gripped the table.

Patricia explained that someone had attempted to remove Daniel from the maternity ward shortly after his birth. The identification confusion had been used to create an opportunity to move the wrong infant without immediately alerting the parents.

But she had intervened.

The infant who was supposed to be removed remained in the nursery.

The second baby had been temporarily identified under Daniel's details, but the original records had eventually been restored.

"Who tried to take me?"" Daniel asked.

Patricia's voice trembled.

"I never saw his face clearly. But I heard his name.""

"Tell me.""

"Richard Reed.""

Vanessa stumbled backward.

"Dad?""

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"Enough!""

Daniel stared at him.

"You tried to take me from my mother?""

Richard's face twisted.

"You're making a ridiculous accusation.""

Arthur spoke into the phone.

"Ms. Cole, do you have documentation supporting this?""

"I have the recording, the original incident report, and a statement from the nurse who changed the bracelet. Her name was Helen Morris. She died several years ago, but she gave me copies before she passed.""

Arthur nodded.

"Can you send them to my office?""

"I can bring them personally. But there's something else.""

"What?""

Patricia paused.

"The person who helped Richard wasn't a stranger. It was someone Robert trusted.""

I looked at Arthur.

He slowly opened the medical envelope again.

There was a second signature beneath Patricia's statement.

I recognized the handwriting.

My stomach dropped.

It belonged to Robert's younger brother.

My brother-in-law.

"James," I whispered.

Arthur looked at me.

"James Whitmore?""

I nodded.

Daniel frowned.

"Uncle James?""

Arthur turned the paper toward him.

"Your uncle was the executor of several of your grandfather's original business arrangements.""

Richard suddenly laughed.

"Now we're getting somewhere.""

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Richard straightened his jacket.

"James was the one who introduced me to Robert. He was the one who told me about the trust. He was the one who knew how much your husband was worth.""

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Are you saying James arranged the incident?""

Richard smiled.

"I'm saying you should ask him.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"Uncle James is alive. I'll call him.""

Before he could dial, Arthur stopped him.

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because if James was involved, calling him now could give him time to destroy evidence.""

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"There's something in Dad's office.""

Richard turned sharply.

"Vanessa.""

She continued, her voice shaking.

"I saw an old folder. It had James Whitmore's name on it.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why were you in his office?""

"Because Dad asked me to collect some documents before the wedding.""

Arthur stepped closer.

"Where is the folder?""

"In his study. At home.""

Richard's expression became dangerous.

"You have no idea what you're saying.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"I found photographs, bank statements, and a letter. I thought it was business paperwork.""

"What letter?""

She looked at me.

"It had Robert's name on it.""

Arthur asked, "Do you remember what it said?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"Something about the three men who agreed to divide the Whitmore fortune.""

My blood ran cold.

"Three men?""

She nodded.

"Richard Reed. James Whitmore. And someone named Thomas.""

Arthur's face changed.

"Thomas?""

Vanessa searched her memory.

"Thomas Bell. I think that's what it said.""

Arthur immediately closed the folder.

Daniel looked at him.

"Who is Thomas Bell?""

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Margaret, we need to find James before he realizes that Patricia has spoken.""

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

There was a photograph attached.

It showed a man standing outside my house.

Underneath it were six words:

*"Ask your mother what she buried.""*

Daniel turned the phone toward me.

And I recognized the man in the photograph.

It was my brother-in-law, James Whitmore.

But standing beside him was someone I never expected to see again.

May you like

My late husband's former business partner.

Thomas Bell.
