Chapter 6: The Baby They Tried to Erase
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The words seemed to hang above the table.
I never gave birth to Daniel.
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair fell backward.
"What do you mean you never gave birth to me?""
Eleanor looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I mean exactly what I said.""
"Then why would someone put your name on that document?""
"I don't know.""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"This entire conversation is a circus.""
Arthur ignored him.
"Eleanor, are you willing to provide a sworn statement?""
"Yes.""
"Will you submit to an independent review of the historical records?""
"Yes.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Do you know who my biological mother is?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"No, sweetheart.""
The word seemed to surprise her as much as it surprised him.
She lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I know this is difficult.""
Daniel looked toward me.
"Mom?""
I reached for him.
He stepped back.
Not aggressively.
Just enough to make my heart hurt.
"Please don't," he whispered.
I lowered my hand.
"Daniel, I carried you. I raised you. I loved you every day of your life.""
"I know.""
"Whatever those records say, nothing changes that.""
He stared at the floor.
Then he nodded.
But he wasn't ready to come closer.
Arthur cleared his throat.
"There's a practical reason we need to establish the truth.""
He opened another section of the folder.
"Robert's trust contains a provision concerning any person who knowingly makes fraudulent claims against the estate. The claim filed under Eleanor's name could trigger a temporary freeze if we cannot establish who submitted it.""
I looked at the documents.
"Could they freeze everything?""
"Not permanently. But they could delay distributions and place certain assets under review.""
Richard finally smiled.
"Then perhaps we should stop wasting time and let the courts decide.""
Arthur turned toward him.
"That would be convenient for you.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Excuse me?""
"Your company has outstanding debts secured against several commercial properties. If the trust is frozen, you may have an opportunity to pressure Margaret into selling assets.""
Richard laughed.
"You can't prove that.""
Arthur removed a financial statement.
"Your company owes approximately $2.4 million to private lenders. One of those lenders is connected to Reed Event Holdings.""
Vanessa stared at her father.
"What?""
Richard turned toward her.
"Don't.""
"You said the company was for my future.""
"It is.""
"Why does it have debts?""
Richard lowered his voice.
"Vanessa, this is not the place.""
She looked at him.
"You used my name?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Did you use her company to make the fraudulent claim?""
Richard's face tightened.
"I was protecting my daughter.""
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
"By putting me in prison?""
Richard slapped his palm against the table.
"Enough!""
The sound startled several guests.
Arthur calmly closed the folder.
"Security has already been informed that certain documents may have been unlawfully obtained. I suggest you remain here until we establish the facts.""
Richard looked toward the entrance.
Two security officers were standing near the reception doors.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that he wasn't controlling the room.
But then Vanessa did something unexpected.
She walked toward Arthur.
"I have something.""
Richard's head snapped around.
"Vanessa, don't.""
She reached into her bridal handbag and removed a small silver USB drive.
"I kept copies.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Copies of what?""
"Everything.""
Her voice shook.
"Emails. Messages. Bank transfers. The documents Dad asked me to sign.""
Richard lunged toward her.
One of the security officers stepped between them.
"Sir, stay where you are.""
Vanessa held the drive tightly.
"I didn't know what he was doing at first. He told me the company was a legitimate wedding-planning business. He said we would use it to manage our future investments.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"And when did you find out?""
She looked down.
"Three months ago.""
"Three months?""
"I found the emails.""
"You knew?""
"I thought I could fix it.""
Daniel laughed once, without humor.
"You thought you could fix it by marrying me?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I loved you.""
"Did you?""
"Yes!""
"Then why did you push my mother into the mud?""
She had no answer.
I watched her face.
For a moment, I thought she might apologize.
Instead, she looked at me with resentment.
"Because she was going to ruin everything.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Arthur accepted the USB drive.
"We will preserve this as potential evidence.""
Vanessa nodded.
"There's something else.""
Richard's face changed.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at him.
"You told me Robert's estate had a hidden account. You said the money would be transferred after the wedding.""
Arthur stiffened.
"What hidden account?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"An account connected to the original trust. Dad said Robert had deposited money there for Daniel's future.""
Arthur looked at me.
"That isn't possible. Every trust account was disclosed.""
Richard shook his head.
"She's confused.""
Vanessa continued.
"He said the account could only be accessed using two signatures. Margaret's and Daniel's.""
I stared at Arthur.
"Is that true?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he removed a thin envelope from the back of the folder.
"I was instructed to keep this separate.""
He opened it.
Inside was a bank statement.
My name appeared at the top.
So did Daniel's.
The account balance was $3,750,000.
I felt my legs go weak.
"Robert never told me about this.""
Arthur studied the document.
"This account was opened twenty-eight years ago.""
Daniel looked at the date.
"That's the year I was born.""
Arthur nodded.
"It appears your father deposited an initial amount shortly after your birth. The account grew through several investments.""
I stared at the balance.
"Why didn't he include it in the estate?""
"Because it wasn't technically part of his estate.""
Richard suddenly looked relieved.
But Arthur continued.
"The account was established under a separate custodial arrangement. It cannot be accessed by either beneficiary without satisfying a condition in the original agreement.""
Daniel frowned.
"What condition?""
Arthur turned the paper over.
There was a paragraph written in Robert's handwriting.
I recognized every letter.
If my son ever learns the truth about the hospital incident, this account may be released only after both Margaret and Daniel receive the original birth records.
I looked at Arthur.
"Where are they?""
He opened his briefcase and removed a sealed medical envelope.
It had a hospital archive stamp dated twenty-nine years earlier.
My hands trembled.
"Why didn't you give this to me before?""
"Because Robert instructed me not to open it unless someone attempted to challenge Daniel's identity or interfere with the trust.""
I looked toward Richard.
He was no longer smiling.
Eleanor approached the table.
"Arthur, may I see the envelope?""
Arthur hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because I recognize the hospital archive stamp.""
She pointed to a small handwritten code in the corner.
"That was the department where I worked.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Does that mean you know what's inside?""
"No.""
She leaned closer.
"But I recognize the signature.""
She pointed to the authorization line.
The name was written in blue ink.
*Dr. Samuel Whitaker.*
I knew that name.
He had been the obstetrician who delivered Daniel.
But he had died fifteen years earlier.
Arthur examined the signature.
"That's concerning.""
"Why?"" I asked.
Eleanor swallowed.
"Because Dr. Whitaker never worked at St. Mary's.""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"Then who delivered my son?""
Eleanor turned the envelope over.
There was a second name written beneath the first.
A woman's name.
A name I hadn't heard in nearly three decades.
She whispered it.
"Patricia Cole.""
Arthur immediately reached for his phone.
"Margaret, do you know this woman?""
I searched my memory.
Then I remembered a young nurse with dark hair who had been present during my delivery.
She had disappeared from the hospital staff shortly afterward.
I shook my head.
"Only vaguely.""
Arthur looked at the sealed envelope.
"Robert's instructions say we must open this together.""
He carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a medical report, a handwritten statement, and a photograph.
The photograph showed two newborn babies in hospital bassinets.
One wore a blue identification bracelet.
The other wore a pink one.
On the back, Robert had written:
*"The wrong baby was not an accident. Patricia told me who ordered the switch.""*
I felt the room spin.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"Who ordered it?""
Arthur unfolded the handwritten statement.
His eyes moved across the first few lines.
Then he looked up at Richard.
"Richard, I believe you should contact your attorney immediately.""
Richard's face turned gray.
Because the statement contained a name.
And it wasn't Richard Reed's.
It was the name of the man who had helped him plan everything.
*Daniel's biological father.*
Daniel looked at Arthur.
"Who?""
Arthur slowly placed the statement on the table.
Then he said:
"Your father knew about this before you were one year old. And he knew the person responsible was someone Robert once trusted with his life.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Two babies.
Two bracelets.
Two families.
And suddenly, I understood why Robert had kept that account untouched for twenty-eight years.
But before Arthur could reveal the name, Daniel's phone began ringing.
The caller ID showed a number he hadn't seen since childhood.
*Dr. Samuel Whitaker's private office.*
Daniel answered.
A woman's trembling voice came through the speaker.
"Daniel? My name is Patricia Cole. I've been trying to find you for twenty-nine years.""
She paused.
May you like
Then whispered:
"Your father wasn't the man who raised you. And the man standing in that room with you right now knows exactly why.""
