Chapter 4: The Child My Father Never Knew

Marcus stared at the note for so long that I began to wonder whether he intended to remain silent until somebody died.

Then he pulled out a chair.

“Your mother was pregnant before your father passed away,” he said.

“The baby wasn't his.””

Mama covered her mouth.

Tiana looked between them, her expression twisting with disbelief.

“You're telling me you got my mother pregnant before Naomi even married you?””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't know she was pregnant until later.””

I gripped the back of my chair.

“Later when?””

“About six weeks after I found out Denise was pregnant, she started bleeding. She called me at work, and I drove her to the hospital.””

Mama began crying harder.

I remembered that period. Mama had told us she was suffering from complications related to her blood pressure. She had stayed with Aunt Gloria for several days, and when she returned, she refused to discuss what had happened.

I had brought her groceries, washed her sheets, and sat beside her while she slept.

I had believed I was helping my grieving mother recover from a medical scare.

All that time, she had been grieving a secret child with my husband.

“Was the baby born?”” I asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you tell Daddy?””

“No.””

“Did you tell me?””

“Naomi, you weren't even married to me yet.””

“That doesn't answer my question!””

He flinched.

Mama reached across the table.

“Baby, please. Let me explain my side.””

I looked at her hand until she withdrew it.

“You had an affair with my fiancé. You got pregnant. You lost the baby.

Then you let me marry him without telling me any of it. Which part of that story needs your side explained?””

Her shoulders shook.

“I was ashamed.””

“You were ashamed?””

“Yes.””

“Then imagine how I feel sitting here discovering that my mother and my husband have been sharing secrets longer than I've been sharing a home with him.””

She lowered her head.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I looked at Marcus.

“Why did Daddy pay the hospital bill?””

He swallowed.

“Because he found out.””

“How?””

Marcus looked toward Mama, but she shook her head.

He exhaled.

“Your father came to the hospital while Denise was being treated. He had been calling her all day. She wasn't answering because she was afraid he'd hear what was happening.””

I stared at my mother.

“You let Daddy find out that you were carrying another man's child while you were still married to him?””

Mama whispered, “It was complicated.””

“No. It was a choice.””

She recoiled.

Marcus continued, his voice growing quieter.

“Your father asked me to meet him outside the hospital. He already knew I'd been seeing Denise. He said he had enough evidence to destroy my reputation and put me in prison if I had committed fraud to conceal the affair.””

I frowned.

“Fraud?””

Marcus's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“Your father had invested money in my business.””

I remembered the beginning of Marcus's company. He had started with one small commercial cleaning contract, a used van, and a borrowed office space. My father had helped him buy equipment and introduced him to several property managers.

I had always believed Daddy supported Marcus because he saw potential in him.

Now I wondered what my father had really been trying to accomplish.

“How much money?”” I asked.

Marcus hesitated.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

The number hung in the air.

I stared at him.

“Daddy gave you a quarter of a million dollars?””

“He invested in the business.””

“And did you use it for the business?””

“Yes.””

Mama looked up sharply.

“Marcus.””

He turned toward her.

“What?””

“You promised you wouldn't bring that up.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did he use it for?””

Marcus looked away.

My mother began shaking her head.

“Naomi, please. That money has nothing to do with tonight.””

“Then it should be easy to explain.””

Marcus stood and walked to the window. Outside, the porch light illuminated the driveway where our cars were parked.

“I was struggling financially,” he said.

“I had borrowed money from several people. Your father agreed to invest, but I needed more than he was willing to give.””

“How much more?””

“About eighty thousand dollars.””

I stared at him.

“And?””

“And I borrowed it from a private lender.””

“Did you pay it back?””

“Eventually.””

Mama let out a bitter laugh.

“No, you didn't.””

Marcus turned.

“Don't.””

“You never paid it back,” she said.

“You made me believe you had settled everything.””

I looked at her.

“Why would you care about his debts?””

She went silent.

The answer was becoming clearer, and I hated myself for seeing it.

Because they had been involved.

Because she had become responsible for his problems.

Because the affair wasn't just about two people making one terrible decision.

It had become a private world in which my mother and my husband had obligations to each other that I knew nothing about.

“What happened when Daddy found out?”” I asked.

Marcus returned to his chair.

“He gave me two options. I could tell you the truth and lose you, or I could leave town, repay what I owed, and never contact Denise again.””

My mother whispered, “He threatened to tell Naomi everything.””

“He had every right to,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

“I know that now.””

“No, you know that because you got caught. There's a difference.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Your father offered to forgive part of the investment if I signed an agreement to stay away from Denise.””

I looked at the note again.

“Did you sign it?””

“Yes.””

“And then you married me three weeks later.””

He nodded.

I felt the room grow smaller.

“You promised Daddy you would stay away from my mother, and then you married me?””

“I was trying to make things right.””

I laughed, unable to stop myself.

“By marrying his daughter?””

“I loved you, Naomi.””

“Did you love me when you signed that agreement? Did you love me when you walked down the aisle? Did you love me when you kissed me in front of a hundred people while knowing you had already slept with my mother?””

His mouth opened, but he had no answer.

I sat down because my legs no longer felt steady.

My wedding day had always been one of my most treasured memories. I remembered Daddy walking me down the aisle, his arm warm beneath my hand. I remembered him squeezing my fingers before he gave me away.

He had looked directly at Marcus and said, “Take care of my girl.””

I had thought those words were a blessing.

Now I wondered whether they had been a warning.

“What happened to the agreement?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at Mama.

She stared at her hands.

“I destroyed my copy,” he said.

“Your father kept his.””

“Then why didn't Daddy tell me?””

“Because he was dying.””

The words silenced me.

Marcus continued.

“He was afraid that if he told you everything, you'd lose your mother and your husband at the same time. He wanted you to have a chance at a happy marriage.””

My throat tightened.

That sounded like my father. He had always tried to protect us from painful truths until he could no longer carry them himself.

But it also sounded like the perfect excuse for a man who had spent years benefiting from that silence.

“You're blaming Daddy now?”” I asked.

“No.””

“You're saying he should have told me, but you're also using his decision not to tell me as an excuse for keeping the secret yourself.””

Marcus lowered his head.

I looked toward Mama.

“Did you love him?””

She blinked.

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

Her face crumpled.

“I don't know what I felt anymore.””

“That's convenient.””

“Naomi—”

“Did you love him?””

She stared at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

Tiana covered her mouth.

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth I had suspected but somehow hoped wasn't real.

My mother hadn't simply made a mistake. She had chosen my husband repeatedly, even when those choices meant allowing me to build a life on top of a lie.

I stood and picked up my purse.

This time, nobody tried to stop me.

At the doorway, I turned back.

“I want copies of every document Daddy left behind. The agreement. The will. Anything with Marcus's name on it.””

Mama nodded weakly.

“I'll find them.””

“And Marcus?””

He looked up.

“Don't come home tonight.””

“Naomi, that's my house.””

“It's my house too. And right now, I don't want to share it with a man who has been lying to me since before our wedding.””

He started to speak.

I raised my hand.

“One more word, and I'll call Rachel to come get me before I say something I can't take back.””

He fell silent.

I stepped onto the porch and breathed in the cool night air.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel appeared.

*Naomi, my mother just found the document she told me about. There's something in your father's will that your mother never told you. Call me immediately.*

I stared at the screen.

Behind me, the front door creaked open.

Mama stood in the doorway, holding a thick manila envelope.

Her face was pale.

“Naomi,” she whispered, “before you read that will, you need to know one thing.””

I turned.

She clutched the envelope against her chest.

“Your father didn't just leave Marcus money.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“He left you the business.””
