Chapter 7: The Man Who Paid for My Silence
Richard Hale stood at the bottom of our porch steps as though he owned the house, the street, and everyone unfortunate enough to be standing in his way.
His dark overcoat was perfectly pressed. A silver watch glinted beneath his cuff. Behind him, his lawyer carried a leather briefcase and wore the bored expression of someone accustomed to making other people's problems disappear.
But Richard wasn't looking at the police officers.
He wasn't looking at Vanessa.
He was staring at me.
"How old are you now?"" he asked.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Twenty.""
He nodded slowly, as if confirming a calculation.
Then he looked at my father.
"You were supposed to keep her away from all of this.""
Daniel gripped the porch railing.
"You said the investigation would remain confidential.""
"It was confidential until you allowed a private investigator to start digging through hospital records.""
Andrew Shaw stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale, I suggest you speak through your attorney. There are allegations of falsified adoption documents, financial misconduct, and the concealment of evidence relating to a missing woman.""
Richard gave him a thin smile.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No. I'm informing you that this matter is already being reviewed by legal counsel.""
"Then your legal counsel should tell you to stop making accusations you can't prove.""
He turned back to me.
"You look remarkably like your mother.""
I stared at him.
"Which one?""
For the first time, his expression faltered.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered, "Sophie, what is happening?""
I couldn't answer her.
Richard stepped closer.
"I knew Eleanor when she was young. Before she became obsessed with destroying people's lives.""
"She says she's my mother.""
"She is.""
The bluntness of his answer stunned me.
"You know that?""
"Of course I know that.""
"Then you're my father?""
He glanced toward Daniel.
My father's face had gone white.
Richard exhaled through his nose.
"Biologically, yes.""
The world seemed to stop.
Mom covered her mouth. Vanessa gripped the porch post. Somewhere behind Richard, a police radio crackled.
I had imagined this moment a dozen times since discovering the DNA report. I'd imagined anger, tears, perhaps even relief.
I hadn't imagined feeling nothing at all.
"You knew about me," I said.
Richard nodded.
"From the beginning.""
"And you never came looking for me?""
"I was told you were being raised in a stable home.""
"By a man who stole my identity?""
Richard's eyes hardened.
"Your father—"
"Daniel isn't my biological father.""
Richard paused.
Then he gave a small, humorless laugh.
"You're right. He isn't.""
The casualness of his response made me want to scream.
"Why did you pay him?""
His lawyer stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale will not discuss private financial arrangements on a public porch.""
Richard raised one hand, silencing him.
"Because I wanted to protect my family.""
I laughed.
"Which family? The one you had with your wife, or the daughter you abandoned?""
His jaw tightened.
"You're making assumptions about circumstances you don't understand.""
"Then explain them.""
He looked at Daniel.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Finally, Richard said, "Eleanor and I were involved before I married my wife. When she became pregnant, I offered to support her. She refused. She wanted me to leave my fiancée and build a life with her.""
"And you said no.""
"I made a decision.""
"You chose your reputation.""
"I chose to protect my children.""
I looked at him, confused.
"What children?""
He seemed to realize he'd said too much.
His lawyer touched his arm.
"Richard, we should leave.""
But Richard ignored him.
"Your mother threatened to expose our relationship. She said she would tell my fiancée everything and make certain I lost the political future I'd spent years building.""
"So you paid Daniel to take me away?""
"I paid for a private arrangement to ensure you were raised somewhere safe.""
"You paid him to keep me from my mother.""
Richard's voice sharpened.
"I paid him because Eleanor was unstable and because the situation had become dangerous.""
"Did you pay him to steal my college fund, too?""
That question landed differently.
Richard glanced at Daniel.
"What college fund?""
My father lowered his head.
I looked between them.
"Sixty-four thousand dollars went to Andrew Price Consulting. Thirty-eight thousand six hundred disappeared from my education account. Where did the money go?""
Richard's expression became unreadable.
"Daniel was responsible for the trust.""
"That's not an answer.""
"No," he admitted.
"It isn't.""
Andrew opened his folder.
"Bank records show multiple transfers from accounts associated with the Bennett family trust into an entity registered to one of Mr. Hale's former business associates.""
Richard turned toward him.
"That company has nothing to do with me.""
"Then you won't mind providing your financial records to the investigators.""
"I won't be providing anything without a court order.""
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"You told me the money was for Eleanor's legal expenses.""
Richard looked at him with contempt.
"And you believed me?""
The words struck my father harder than any physical blow.
"You told me that if I cooperated, Sophie would have a future," Daniel said.
"You said you'd pay for her education.""
Richard adjusted his cuff.
"I said I'd make sure the arrangement remained financially secure.""
"You promised!""
"I made a business agreement, Daniel. You chose to mismanage the money.""
Vanessa stepped between them.
"Wait. Dad, are you saying you took Sophie's college fund because Richard paid you?""
Daniel looked at her.
"I was trying to protect both of you.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"By stealing from Sophie?""
"I never intended for you to lose your education money," he said to me.
"The transfers were supposed to be temporary.""
"But they weren't.""
"No.""
"And you didn't tell me who my father was.""
"No.""
"Or who my mother was.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"No.""
I waited for an explanation.
An apology.
Something that might make the last twenty years fit into a story I could understand.
Instead, Daniel looked at Richard and said, "You told me Eleanor had signed away her rights.""
Richard's expression changed.
"She did sign an agreement.""
"She told me she never signed it.""
"She was lying.""
Andrew removed a document from his folder.
"Actually, we have reason to believe the signature was forged.""
Richard went very still.
Andrew placed the document on the porch table.
It was a copy of the original agreement, dated three days after my birth. Eleanor's signature appeared at the bottom.
Beneath it was the signature of a witness.
*CLAIRE BENNETT.*
My mother's name.
Mom made a strangled sound.
"I didn't sign that.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She shook her head violently.
"I never signed that document. Daniel told me it was a hospital consent form.""
Richard's lawyer closed his briefcase.
"We're leaving.""
Richard didn't move.
I stepped toward him.
"Did you forge my mother's signature?""
He looked at me.
For the first time, I saw genuine uncertainty in his eyes.
"Your mother was capable of many things.""
"That's not what I asked.""
He glanced at Daniel.
My father whispered, "Tell her.""
Richard's face hardened.
"You want the truth? Fine. Eleanor did not want you to be raised by strangers.
She wanted to keep both girls. She threatened to expose me if I refused to acknowledge you publicly.""
"So you arranged for me to disappear.""
"I arranged for you to be raised by people who could provide for you.""
"And when I grew up, you expected me never to ask questions?""
"I expected Daniel to honor his agreement.""
I looked at my father.
"How much?""
He swallowed.
"Richard paid me $150,000 over several years.""
Mom staggered backward.
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
"You sold your own daughter?""
Daniel began to cry.
"No. I thought I was protecting you.""
"Which daughter?"" Vanessa demanded.
"The one you knew was yours, or the one you weren't sure about?""
He had no answer.
Richard turned toward the driveway.
"Enough. This conversation is over.""
But before he could leave, Andrew's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then looked directly at Richard.
"That's interesting.""
Richard stopped.
"What?""
"The financial investigators have just located the account where the missing trust money was transferred.""
Richard's lawyer stepped closer.
Andrew continued.
"It's registered to a company called Vale Family Holdings.""
Richard's face lost all color.
I frowned.
"Vale? As in Eleanor?""
Andrew nodded.
"The account was opened six months ago. The beneficiary isn't Eleanor, though.""
He looked at me.
"It's you, Sophie.""
My heart lurched.
"What?""
"Someone has been depositing money into an account in your name. The balance is currently just over $2.3 million.""
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked as though he'd been struck.
Daniel gripped the railing so tightly his knuckles whitened.
Then Richard whispered, "That's impossible.""
Andrew closed his folder.
"Apparently, someone has been preparing for this day for a very long time.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through, trembling but unmistakably familiar from the recordings Andrew had played earlier.
"Sophie?""
I stopped breathing.
"Mom?""
A quiet sob.
"My darling girl. I've been trying to reach you for twenty years.""
I pressed the phone against my ear.
"Where are you?""
"At the courthouse.""
"Why?""
"Because today, I'm going to tell the world what Richard Hale did to us.""
A pause.
Then she whispered, "But before you believe anything your father tells you, you need to know what happened to your sister on the night you were born.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at me, tears running down her face.
"What happened?"" I asked.
Eleanor's voice broke.
"Vanessa wasn't the only baby taken from that hospital, Sophie.""
The call ended.
And for the first time, I understood why Richard Hale looked so frightened.
He hadn't come to stop a family secret from being exposed.
He'd come to stop Eleanor from revealing that there was another child.
May you like
One nobody had ever mentioned.
One whose name was missing from every record.
