Chapter 7: The Man Grandma Buried Twice

For several seconds, Dad couldn't look away from the name in the blue ledger.

Daniel Mercer.

He said it again, barely above a whisper, as though speaking it aloud might somehow make it less real.

“My mother told me he died in a car accident before I was born. She said there were no surviving relatives, no estate, nothing left to investigate.””

Rebecca sat across from him, her fingers resting on the open ledger.

“Did your mother ever discuss her first marriage?””

“Almost never. When I was a child, I asked why there were no photographs of her wedding. She told me it was a painful chapter of her life and that she wanted to move forward.””

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“When I was seventeen, I found an old photograph of her standing beside a man. She took it from me and locked it away. She said he was someone she had loved who had died long ago.””

“Did she give you his name?”” I asked.

“No. She said there was no point bringing up the past.””

Rebecca turned several pages of the ledger until she found the entry marked NORTHBRIDGE.

Beneath Daniel Mercer's name were three dates, a reference to an account, and a handwritten note.

Contact verified. Alive as of March 14.

Dad pushed his chair backward.

“No. That's impossible.””

Rebecca kept her voice measured.

“Richard, I need you to understand that this ledger is evidence of what your mother recorded, not independent proof of Daniel Mercer's current identity or circumstances. We'll need to verify it.””

“Then verify it.””

“I intend to.””

She photographed the entry and made a note to contact the relevant records office.

I looked at the company name again.

Northbridge Property Services.

The same company registered to Vanessa.

“Why would Vanessa have anything to do with Grandma's first husband?”” I asked.

Rebecca turned to another page.

“Your grandmother recorded a payment made to Northbridge. The note beside it says, ‘Initial contact fee—Daniel.’”

Dad stared at the words.

“Vanessa paid someone to find him?””

“It appears she may have,” Rebecca said.

“But we need the underlying records before drawing conclusions.””

“Why?”” I asked.

“Why would she search for a man Grandma said was dead?””

No one answered.

Then Dad remembered something.

“Last year, Vanessa asked me whether Mom had ever owned property overseas.””

Rebecca looked up.

“What did you tell her?””

“I said I didn't think so. She asked whether Mom had received money from a man named Mercer. I told her I'd never heard the name.””

“What happened next?””

“She laughed and said she'd been reading an old document and must have confused two people.””

Dad leaned forward, gripping the edge of the table.

“I thought it was nothing.””

Rebecca turned back to the ledger.

“Your mother may have discovered that Daniel Mercer was alive. If Vanessa found out as well, it could explain why she began investigating the estate.””

“But why would that affect the inheritance?”” I asked.

Rebecca took out the final pages of Grandma's handwritten notes.

“Because the identity of a former spouse can matter if there are unresolved marital property claims, prior agreements, or assets held in a different legal capacity. We don't yet know whether any of those issues apply here.””

Dad stared at her.

“Are you saying my mother's marriage wasn't legally over?””

“No. I'm saying we need to verify the marriage records and the circumstances surrounding his reported death before we can understand what this means.””

Dad stood and walked to the window.

“I grew up believing my mother had been abandoned by someone who died before he could make things right. She built her life around that loss.””

His voice broke.

“And now I'm being told he might still be alive.””

I wanted to comfort him, but I couldn't stop thinking about Vanessa.

She had hired Rebecca to investigate Grandma's capacity. She had created Northbridge. She had moved my college money through secret accounts.

And somewhere along the way, she had searched for a man Grandma believed should have remained in the past.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Stop looking into Daniel Mercer. You have no idea what he can do to your family.

I showed Rebecca.

She photographed the message and asked me to preserve the original.

“Could it be Vanessa?”” I asked.

“It could be anyone with knowledge of the investigation. We shouldn't assume the sender's identity.””

Dad turned from the window.

“I'm done waiting. If this man is alive, I want to know who he is.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I'll contact my records investigator. In the meantime, I want to review Northbridge's public filings and the financial documents your grandmother preserved.””

She opened her laptop and began comparing the company registration details with the ledger.

After several minutes, she stopped.

“Richard, I think you need to see this.””

She turned the screen toward him.

Northbridge Property Services had been incorporated in the name of Vanessa Pierce, but its original registered office was an address in another state.

The address belonged to a small law office that had closed two years earlier.

Rebecca searched the address in the public records database.

A second company appeared.

Mercer Holdings LLC.

Its managing member was listed as Daniel Mercer.

Dad gripped the back of his chair.

“They were connected.””

“On paper, yes,” Rebecca said.

“But we need to determine the nature of that connection.””

She opened another record.

Mercer Holdings had acquired a partial interest in a commercial property portfolio several years earlier. The portfolio included a building that had once belonged to Grandma's family.

Dad stared at the screen.

“That building was sold before I was born.””

“According to the current property records, a portion of the original ownership interest was transferred into a separate holding structure. Your grandmother may have retained an interest that wasn't reflected in the ordinary estate summaries.””

I looked at the blue ledger.

“Is that where the $420,000 came from?””

“Possibly. The account records should tell us more.””

Rebecca picked up her phone and made another call.

This time, she spoke with a records investigator who had been helping her trace the financial transactions.

She explained the company names, the dates, and the connection to Daniel Mercer.

Then she listened.

Her expression tightened.

“What do you mean the address was used again?”” she asked.

A pause.

“Can you confirm the date?””

Another pause.

“Send me the record. Don't contact anyone at the address.””

She ended the call.

Dad stepped toward her.

“What happened?””

“The investigator found a recent filing associated with Mercer Holdings. Someone used the same registered agent to update the company's records three months ago.””

“Who?””

Rebecca looked at the screen.

“Vanessa Pierce.””

Dad closed his eyes.

My sister hadn't merely stumbled across a name in an old document.

She had been actively working with a company connected to the man Grandma had believed was dead.

Then Rebecca's phone rang again.

She listened for less than a minute before asking the caller to repeat the information.

When she ended the call, her face had lost its composure.

“Daniel Mercer has been located,” she said.

Dad went rigid.

“Where?””

“An investigator found a current residential address associated with his identity. The records suggest he is alive.””

Dad sat down slowly.

“Can we speak to him?””

“Not yet. I want to establish the circumstances before we contact him. If there are legal issues involving your mother's estate, we need to proceed carefully.””

I looked at the ledger once more.

“Rebecca, what exactly did Grandma write beside his name?””

She turned the book toward me.

The entry contained one final line, written in a different pen.

He knows what happened to the original trust. Vanessa must not reach him first.

Dad read it aloud.

Then he looked at Rebecca.

“What original trust?””

Rebecca stared at the words.

“I don't know.””

For the first time, she seemed genuinely afraid of what we might discover.

She closed the ledger and placed it in her briefcase.

“We need to find Daniel Mercer before Vanessa does anything else.””

Dad stood.

“Then let's go.””

But Rebecca shook her head.

“Not until I verify one more thing.””

She showed us the investigator's latest message.

A photograph of a property record had arrived.

It showed Daniel Mercer's name beside a transfer dated six months earlier.

The recipient wasn't Vanessa.

May you like

It was a company called Pierce Family Trust Services.

And the person who had signed the transfer authorization was my father.
