Chapter 2: The Name on the Contract

"Evelyn Carter.""

Captain Hale didn't shout.

He didn't need to.

My name carried across the dock clearly enough for everyone to hear.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa laughed again.

It was a nervous, brittle sound.

"That's a mistake. My sister wouldn't cancel my engagement party.""

Captain Hale glanced at his paperwork.

"Ms. Carter personally contacted our office at 10:14 last night. Her identity was verified, and the cancellation was processed under the terms of the agreement.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"What did you do?""

I held my garment bag in one hand.

"I canceled the charter.""

"You can't!""

"I already did.""

Her face changed.

The smile disappeared. Her cheeks flushed, and she looked around at the sixty guests who were now watching us.

"You're joking," she said.

"I'm not.""

Mom pushed between two relatives.

"Evelyn, this is ridiculous. Whatever disagreement you have with Vanessa, you don't destroy an entire family's celebration.""

I looked at her.

"Interesting. Last night, you said I wasn't part of the family celebration.""

Mom's mouth tightened.

"Don't twist my words.""

"I'm repeating them.""

Grant finally stepped forward.

He was wearing a pale gray suit, with a white pocket square and an expensive watch.

"Let's be reasonable," he said.

I turned toward him.

"Good morning, Grant.""

"Look, I understand there was some misunderstanding about the guest list.""

"Was there?""

"Vanessa was emotional. Weddings and engagements are stressful.""

"This isn't a wedding. And she was very clear.""

He glanced toward the captain.

"Can we resolve the paperwork privately? We'll pay whatever is necessary.""

Captain Hale shook his head.

"The vessel has already been released from the reservation. We have contractual obligations and another scheduling inquiry. Any reinstatement would require management approval, a new agreement, and payment arrangements.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Just let us board. Everyone is already here.""

"I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't authorize that.""

Mom grabbed my arm.

"Call them back.""

I gently removed her hand.

"No.""

"You're being selfish.""

I almost laughed.

There was something extraordinary about hearing that word from someone who had spent years teaching me that my needs should always come last.

"Mom, I paid twenty thousand dollars to reserve this yacht. I signed the agreement. I guaranteed the additional expenses. And last night, Vanessa told me I wasn't real family.""

"She didn't mean it.""

Vanessa snapped, "Mom, stop defending her!""

Mom immediately turned toward her.

"Sweetheart, I'm trying to fix this.""

"Then tell her to call the company!""

I watched the two of them.

Even now, even with the yacht sitting behind them and sixty guests waiting, neither seemed capable of asking why I had been excluded.

They only wanted the money restored.

Grant approached me again.

"Evelyn, can I speak with you for a minute?""

We moved several feet away from the crowd.

His expression became less polished.

"How much did you actually pay?""

"Twenty thousand dollars.""

"And the rest?""

"The contract exposed me to the remaining charges and the damage hold, depending on the final invoice.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Vanessa told me her sister was handling the deposit, but she said the company had already been paid.""

"I handled the deposit. I did not pay the remaining balance.""

He looked toward the yacht.

"She told me everything was covered.""

"Then you should ask her where she expected the money to come from.""

His eyes narrowed.

"Are you saying she lied to me?""

"I'm saying the contract was never in your name.""

He looked genuinely surprised.

"Why would you sign something that expensive?""

"Because she was my sister.""

For a few seconds, he had nothing to say.

Then he asked, "Can you at least help us get another venue?""

I stared at him.

"You mean after the way your fiancée treated me?""

"Look, I don't want to get involved in family drama.""

"Then perhaps you should stop asking me to finance it.""

I walked away.

By then, several guests had begun whispering.

My cousin Rachel approached me.

"Evelyn, is this really true?""

I nodded.

"Did Vanessa actually remove you from the guest list?""

"Yes.""

Rachel looked toward my sister.

"After you paid for everything?""

"Apparently.""

Rachel shook her head.

"I knew she was planning something extravagant, but I didn't know you were paying.""

That caught my attention.

"What did she tell everyone?""

Rachel hesitated.

"She said Grant's family had sponsored the entire celebration.""

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

"What?""

"She said his father wanted to make a grand gesture.""

I looked toward Grant.

He was speaking urgently to Vanessa now.

Rachel continued.

"She also told everyone that you were helping with some administrative arrangements because you're good with numbers.""

Administrative arrangements.

That was what she called the $85,000 obligation.

I thanked Rachel and walked toward the marina office.

The charter manager, Melissa, was waiting with a printed cancellation confirmation.

"Ms. Carter, I'm glad you came. I wanted to give you the final documentation personally.""

"Thank you.""

She handed me a folder.

"The deposit forfeiture is being calculated according to the cancellation schedule. The remaining reservation obligation has been released, subject to the final administrative closeout.""

"Understood.""

She lowered her voice.

"I hope you don't mind me saying this, but the event organizer called our office early this morning.""

I looked up.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes. She wanted us to reverse the cancellation.""

"Did she explain why?""

Melissa glanced at her notes.

"She said the contract had been canceled without her consent.""

I almost smiled.

"Did you explain who held the contract?""

"Of course.""

Melissa paused.

"She also asked whether we could transfer the reservation to her fiancé without requiring a new deposit.""

That was interesting.

"Could you?""

"No. He would need to meet the company's financial requirements, execute a new agreement, and provide the required funds.""

I thanked her again.

As I turned to leave, Melissa added something else.

"Ms. Carter, there's one more issue.""

I stopped.

"What is it?""

"Yesterday afternoon, someone requested a copy of the contract's payment authorization page. They wanted to know whether the event organizer could approve additional charges without the contract holder's signature.""

My fingers tightened around the folder.

"Who requested it?""

Melissa looked down.

"The request came from an email address associated with Grant Whitmore.""

I stared at her.

"Did you send it?""

"No. We explained that only the authorized contract holder could make financial changes.""

I thanked her and stepped outside.

Across the dock, Vanessa was now arguing with Grant.

I couldn't hear every word, but I caught enough.

"You said your father would cover it!""

Grant shook his head.

"I said we'd discuss the budget.""

"You promised!""

"My father never agreed to pay eighty-five thousand dollars for a party!""

Vanessa threw her hands into the air.

"Then why did you let me tell everyone?""

Grant looked toward the crowd.

"Because you said Evelyn had already paid!""

I stopped walking.

So Vanessa hadn't merely hidden my involvement.

She had apparently told everyone that the celebration was already funded.

And Grant believed someone else had taken care of the bill.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unfamiliar number appeared.

"Ms. Carter, this is Daniel Whitmore, Grant's father. I need to speak with you privately before you leave the marina. There is something you should know about the yacht reservation.""

I read it twice.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

"Please don't discuss this with Vanessa yet. I believe you may have been used in a much bigger financial arrangement than you realize.""
