Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Know
For several seconds, I couldn't take my eyes off the envelope.
Vanessa.
Not Olivia.
My father stood beside the table, his wet coat dripping onto Daniel's wooden floor. Daniel remained between us, his expression unreadable.
I reached for the envelope.
My father slapped his hand over it.
“Don't.””
I stared at him.
“You just told me this was about my sister. Now you're telling me I can't read it?””
“Some things are better left buried.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That's what you've been saying for thirty years, Richard.””
My father turned toward him.
“You destroyed this family.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“You did that when you decided one child was worth more than the other.””
I pulled the envelope from beneath my father's hand.
He didn't fight me this time.
Inside was a folded document, several photographs, and a handwritten letter.
The first page was an adoption certificate.
I read the names slowly.
*Biological Mother: Margaret Hayes.*
*Adoptive Parents: Richard and Margaret Hayes.*
My hands began to shake.
“That's impossible,” I whispered.
Daniel moved closer.
“Read the date.””
I looked again.
The adoption had been finalized three years after Vanessa's birth.
But the certificate identified Vanessa as the adopted child.
I looked at my father.
“Vanessa was adopted?””
He rubbed his face.
“Your mother couldn't have children when she married me. We adopted Vanessa. Then, three years later, Margaret became pregnant.””
I looked at Daniel.
“But you just said we were twins.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's what your grandmother believed. And that's what the original hospital records showed.””
My father shook his head.
“Daniel doesn't know everything.””
“Then tell me what happened,” I demanded.
He pulled out a chair.
For the first time in my life, my father looked old.
“Your mother and I adopted Vanessa when she was six months old. She was a beautiful baby. We loved her.””
“Then why does this certificate say Margaret was her biological mother?””
“Because the adoption was never legally completed in the way the document suggests.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard, stop manipulating the truth.””
My father ignored him.
“Margaret was pregnant before we married. Her family didn't approve of the father. When the baby was born, Eleanor arranged for us to take her. We told everyone it was an adoption.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Who was Vanessa's father?””
My father didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“Me.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward him.
“What?””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Vanessa is my biological daughter.””
I stumbled backward.
“No.””
“Olivia, listen—”
“No! You're telling me my grandmother's brother is my sister's father?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
My father slammed his palm against the table.
“Enough!””
I flinched.
He pointed at Daniel.
“You had one job. Stay away from Margaret and the children.””
Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.
“You took my daughter and made me a dead man.””
My father laughed.
“You abandoned her.””
“I was twenty-four. I had no money, no influence, and your family threatened to destroy me if I came near her.””
I looked between them.
“Why didn't Grandma tell Vanessa?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She tried.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
He walked to the cabinet and retrieved another photograph.
It showed Vanessa as a little girl, sitting on Grandma's lap.
Daniel stood behind them.
I recognized the garden.
It was the same garden where Vanessa and I had played as children.
On the back, Grandma had written:
Father and daughter. One day, they will know.
I stared at the photograph.
“Vanessa knew him?””
Daniel nodded.
“She met me when she was little. Eleanor introduced me as a family friend. Your father discovered what was happening and stopped the visits.””
I remembered Vanessa's strange behavior whenever Grandma mentioned Daniel.
Her sudden anger.
Her refusal to attend Grandma's funeral.
The way she had once thrown a family photograph into the trash.
I had thought she was simply being cruel.
Perhaps she had known something.
“Why did she destroy my dress?”” I asked.
My father looked at the floor.
Daniel answered.
“Because she was looking for something sewn into it.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Eleanor hid a small document inside the lining years ago. She told me the dress was the safest place because nobody would dare destroy something so precious to her.””
My eyes returned to the ruined gown in my imagination.
“The dress.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandmother believed Vanessa would eventually discover the truth. She wanted her to have proof.””
I suddenly understood why the cuts had been so precise.
Vanessa hadn't simply attacked the dress.
She had searched it.
“Did she find it?””
Daniel looked at my father.
My father said nothing.
I picked up the adoption certificate again.
There was something strange about the signature at the bottom.
It wasn't my mother's.
It wasn't my father's.
It was Marcus's.
I looked closer.
A second document slipped out from behind the certificate.
It was a recent authorization form.
*Authorized Representative: Marcus Bennett.*
The date was two weeks earlier.
I felt as though someone had punched me.
“Why does Marcus have access to these records?””
My father reached for the document.
I pulled it away.
“He's my fiancé.””
“He was supposed to marry you,” my father said.
“Was?””
He hesitated.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Richard hired Marcus to find the original birth records.””
I stared at my father.
“You hired my fiancé?””
“He was useful.””
“Useful for what?””
“To make sure Vanessa received what belonged to her.””
My heart began pounding.
“What belonged to her?””
My father looked at the adoption papers.
“The company.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“You arranged my marriage to a man who was secretly working for you?””
“Marcus came to me with a proposal.””
“What proposal?””
My father looked directly at me.
“He wanted access to Eleanor's estate.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Don't believe him. Marcus wanted the company, too.””
I felt sick.
Every memory of Marcus suddenly seemed contaminated.
The engagement ring.
The romantic proposal.
The promises about building a future together.
Had any of it been real?
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*Vanessa:* I know you're with Daniel. Don't let Dad tell you everything. He has the original document.
Another message arrived.
*Vanessa:* And Olivia, you need to know why Grandma gave YOU the dress.
I typed back immediately.
*Me:* Why?
The reply came seconds later.
*Vanessa:* Because you were never the daughter she was trying to protect.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Vanessa:* You were the daughter she was trying to give back.
Before I could respond, the apartment door opened.
Marcus walked inside.
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the documents spread across the table.
“Olivia,” he said quietly.
May you like
“We need to talk.””
And in his right hand was the small wooden jewelry box that had disappeared from my bridal suite.
