Chapter 7: The Document That Could Destroy Us Both
At 8:03 the following morning, I stood outside Silas Montgomery's office with a paper cup of coffee growing cold between my hands.
I had worked overnight shifts in emergency medicine. I had watched surgeons fight to save people whose hearts had stopped. I had delivered devastating news to families who were still hoping for miracles.
Yet nothing had prepared me for the possibility that my own sister had used my identity to cover up financial misconduct.
A woman in a charcoal suit approached me.
“Ms. Bennett? I'm Claire Wilson.
Mr. Montgomery is ready for you.””
I followed her into a conference room overlooking the city.
Silas sat at one end of a long table. Beside him were Claire, Priya Shah, and a gray-haired man introduced as Martin Reeves, the company's outside legal counsel.
Three folders lay on the table.
Silas stood when I entered.
“Thank you for coming, Jenna. Before we begin, I want you to understand that you're here as someone whose identity may have been misused. You're not under investigation, and nobody expects you to answer for actions you didn't take.””
I sat down.
“Then what is the document?””
Martin opened the first folder.
“Two weeks ago, Montgomery Global received a request to verify a financial guarantee allegedly signed by you. The request came from a lending institution reviewing a credit facility connected to an investment vehicle used by several employees.””
My fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
“A guarantee? I never guaranteed anyone's debt.””
“We understand that,” Martin replied.
“But the document includes your name, address, and an electronic signature resembling your usual signature.””
He turned the page toward me.
I recognized my handwriting immediately.
Or rather, I recognized the handwriting I had used on the identification form Felicity had once asked me to complete years ago when she helped our father organize family records.
The signature looked convincing.
Too convincing.
But I had never signed that guarantee.
“That's not mine,” I whispered.
Priya nodded.
“We've located an earlier copy of the document without your signature. The signed version was uploaded several days later. We're investigating who made the change and whether the lender relied on it.””
“Why would anyone need my guarantee?””
Silas answered.
“Because the original financing arrangement required additional security after the investment account fell below its required reserve. If someone wanted to keep the account active without providing legitimate collateral, a false guarantee could have concealed the shortfall.””
I stared at him.
“Are you saying Felicity used my name to borrow money?””
“We aren't making that conclusion yet,” Martin said.
“But the possibility is serious enough to warrant a formal investigation.””
He slid another document toward me.
“This is the account authorization associated with the disputed client report. Your name appears in the supporting records, but you were never an employee of Montgomery Global.””
I shook my head.
“I've never even visited this building before yesterday.””
Silas leaned forward.
“Jenna, I want to ask you something that may sound unrelated. Has your sister ever asked you to receive money on her behalf, open an account, sign a document, or provide identification for a business transaction?””
I thought carefully.
“No. Not directly.””
“Has she ever had access to your personal documents?””
“Yes. Years ago, she helped our father organize some family paperwork. I don't know exactly what she copied.””
Priya made a note.
“That's useful. We'll record it as background information, not as proof of anything.””
Martin closed the folder.
“We've also discovered a discrepancy involving the employee investment program. The original records indicate that the company was supposed to receive a repayment from an external investment partner. The repayment never arrived, but an internal report showed the obligation as settled.””
I frowned.
“Who changed it?””
“We're still tracing the approval chain.””
Silas looked toward Claire.
“Tell her about the email.””
Claire opened her laptop.
“Yesterday, we recovered a message from Felicity's corporate account. It refers to an arrangement involving an outside consultant named Graham Pike.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Claire continued.
“Pike advised employees who participated in the investment program. He also had access to some of the supporting financial records. In one message, Felicity asked him whether a substitute guarantee would be sufficient to prevent the account from being frozen.””
My mouth went dry.
“And what did he say?””
Claire displayed the reply.
If the supporting documents are accepted, the account should remain active until the next review. Make sure the paperwork is complete before anyone requests the originals.
Silas's expression hardened.
“That message doesn't prove Pike knew a guarantee was false. But it establishes that he was discussing the exact issue we're investigating.””
I leaned back.
“Could Felicity have been trying to protect herself?””
“Possibly,” Martin said.
“But we must establish what she knew, what she authorized, and whether anyone else participated.””
I looked at the documents again.
There were dates, reference numbers, electronic approval codes, and financial terms I barely understood. But one thing was unmistakable.
My name had been placed on documents I had never seen.
I had spent years being told I was irresponsible because I raised my daughter without a husband. Now I was sitting in a corporate boardroom trying to prove that I hadn't authorized a transaction I knew nothing about.
“Will the police be involved?”” I asked.
“That depends on what the evidence establishes and the appropriate reporting obligations,” Martin replied.
“For now, we are preserving the records and coordinating with the relevant financial institution.””
Silas folded his hands.
“Jenna, I also want to apologize for something.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“At the wedding, I made a decision about your sister's employment in the heat of the moment. I was angry about what I witnessed, and I said she didn't need to return to the office.””
I hadn't expected that admission.
“Are you changing your mind?””
“I'm correcting the process. Her employment will be handled through a formal review, not a public confrontation. What happened at the wedding was unacceptable, but the company must distinguish personal misconduct from any alleged financial wrongdoing.””
I nodded slowly.
It was the first time I had heard anyone acknowledge that two things could be true at once: Felicity had humiliated me, and her employment still deserved a fair process.
Silas continued.
“You also need to know that your identity may have been used without authorization. If you believe your signature was forged, you should consider seeking independent legal advice and reporting the suspected misuse to the appropriate authorities. The company won't ask you to protect Felicity.””
“Thank you.””
He glanced at the final folder.
“There's one more development.””
My stomach tightened.
“What now?””
“Graham Pike has requested an urgent meeting with our legal team. He claims he has information about the investment arrangement that could explain the missing repayment.””
Martin exchanged a look with Priya.
“And he has specifically requested that you be present.””
I stared at them.
“Why would he want me there?””
“We don't know,” Silas replied.
“His request was unusual enough that we haven't agreed to it.””
“Then don't agree to it.””
Silas nodded.
“We won't put you in a room with anyone who may have misused your identity unless there's a legitimate reason and appropriate safeguards.””
I gathered my bag, grateful that someone was finally considering what I needed rather than what Felicity wanted.
But as I stood, Claire's laptop chimed.
She glanced at the screen, then turned it toward Martin.
His expression changed immediately.
“What is it?”” Silas asked.
Martin read the message twice.
“Graham Pike has just submitted a document to our legal team.””
He looked at me.
“It's an authorization form dated three months ago. It contains your name and a statement that you agreed to act as a financial guarantor for the investment account.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That is impossible.””
Martin's voice became quieter.
“There's something else. The form contains a witness signature.””
He turned the laptop toward me.
I recognized the name instantly.
*Richard Bennett.*
My father hadn't merely guaranteed Felicity's loans.
May you like
Someone was now claiming that he had witnessed me agree to guarantee them, too.
And if he had signed that document knowingly, the secret he had kept from me was far more serious than I had imagined.
