Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried
The signature stared back at me.
Robert Carter.
My father's name.
The man who had spent seventeen years telling me he was protecting me.
The man who had watched me sit quietly at family dinners.
The man who had seen me believe I was never important enough.
I looked up slowly.
"Dad.""
My voice barely came out.
He didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
He just stood there.
Silent.
Like silence could still protect him.
"Explain.""
My father closed his eyes.
For a moment, I saw the man I remembered from childhood.
The father who used to carry me on his shoulders.
The father who taught me how to ride a bike.
The father who told me I could become anything.
Then I saw the same man who had spent years making sure I never knew someone believed in me.
"I didn't hurt Silas.""
His first words weren't an apology.
They were a defense.
My chest tightened.
"I didn't ask if you hurt him.""
Everyone in the room watched.
"I asked why you hid the truth from me.""
My father looked toward Silas.
Then Claire.
Then me.
"I was scared.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
My father.
Scared.
"Of what?""
He looked down.
"Of losing everything.""
The answer felt empty.
Because I had already lost something.
Trust.
"My investigation found out that someone close to Silas had been manipulating his medication records," my father said.
Silas stepped forward.
"Someone close to me?""
My father nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why were my records sealed under your name?""
Silence.
My father took a breath.
"Because I was the attorney handling the case.""
The room shifted.
Nobody had known.
Not even me.
"I was working with the hospital's legal department," he continued.
"When they discovered the tampering, I was asked to protect the investigation.""
Claire shook her head.
"No.""
Her voice was quiet.
"But you protected yourself.""
My father looked at her.
"I thought I could handle it.""
Claire's eyes filled with anger.
"You erased Jenna from the story.""
My father flinched.
And finally, he looked at me.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
There it was again.
The same excuse.
The same words.
But this time, I wasn't a child accepting whatever adults told me.
"How?""
My voice cracked.
"How does hiding the best thing I ever did protect me?""
Nobody answered.
I stepped closer.
"You let me believe I was nothing.""
My father looked devastated.
"I never thought that.""
"Then why did you act like it?""
The question hung in the air.
Because there was no easy answer.
No explanation that could repair years of damage.
My father looked toward Felicity.
And she started crying.
"Dad told me the investigation could ruin our family," she said.
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She wiped her face.
"He said if people found out someone tried to hurt Mr. Montgomery, everyone would look at us differently.""
Silas's expression hardened.
"Because the person responsible was connected to your family.""
Felicity nodded.
"But Dad never told me everything.""
My father looked at her.
"You knew enough.""
The words shocked everyone.
Felicity stared at him.
"I knew Jenna saved someone important.""
Her voice broke.
"I knew everyone praised her.""
She looked at me.
"But I didn't know why.""
My anger softened slightly.
Not disappeared.
Just changed.
Because Felicity was not innocent.
But she had been another person trapped inside my father's decisions.
Claire opened the folder again.
"There is one more thing.""
Everyone turned.
She removed a final photograph.
This one was older.
Different.
It showed my father leaving the hospital.
With another person.
A man I didn't recognize.
Silas took the photograph.
His face changed immediately.
"That's him.""
Everyone looked at him.
"Who?""
Silas stared at the picture.
"The person who had access to my medical records.""
My father went pale.
"But he's dead.""
The room went silent.
Claire looked at him.
"Yes.""
My stomach tightened.
"Then why does this matter?""
Silas turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And a sentence.
*"If anything happens to me, Jenna Carter is the witness who knows the truth.""*
I stopped breathing.
My name.
Again.
Always my name.
A person I had never known had trusted me.
Had believed in me.
And my own family had spent years trying to make me believe I didn't matter.
Silas looked at me.
"Jenna, there is something you need to understand.""
"What?""
His voice softened.
"The reason people kept trying to erase your name wasn't because you were insignificant.""
He held up the photograph.
"It was because you were the one person they couldn't control.""
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
For a moment, I considered ignoring it.
Then I answered.
A man's voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
But his first words made my blood run cold.
"Jenna Carter?""
"Yes?""
A pause.
Then:
"You need to leave that room immediately.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who is this?""
The man lowered his voice.
"Someone who knows why your father buried the truth.""
I looked around the ballroom.
Everyone was watching me.
"What do you want?""
The answer came quietly.
"To tell you the part your father never knew.""
I froze.
"What part?""
The man whispered:
"Your father didn't seal the investigation to protect you.""
May you like
A pause.
"He sealed it because he was protecting the person who tried to kill Silas Montgomery.""
