Chapter 9: The Last Thing Rick Wanted Me to See

The old clinic stood behind a row of abandoned commercial buildings.

Its windows were dark.

A faded sign hung above the entrance.

BENNETT FAMILY RESEARCH CENTER.

The name looked almost respectable.

That was what frightened me most.

Rick had spent years building something that looked ordinary from the outside.

A business.

A school partnership.

A family.

And somewhere beneath all of it, he had been keeping records of children.

Including our daughter.

Detective Morgan arranged for officers to approach the building from two sides.

I was instructed to remain inside the vehicle.

I hated every second of it.

Then my phone rang.

Rick.

Morgan nodded.

I answered.

"Where's Lily?""

"She's fine.""

"Let me speak to her.""

"Not yet.""

"Rick, please.""

He sighed.

"You always do this.""

"Do what?""

"Make everything emotional.""

I stared at the building.

"She's seven years old. She's been frightened for weeks. You took her from a hospital.""

"I was protecting her.""

"From whom?""

"From people who don't understand.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then bring her home.""

"Not until we finish talking.""

"What do you want?""

"The original paperwork.""

"I don't have it.""

"Your mother does.""

I went still.

"How do you know?""

"Because I've been looking for it for two years.""

"Why?""

"Because your father stole it.""

I looked at Morgan.

He was listening.

"Rick, what is on that paperwork?""

He laughed softly.

"Everything.""

"Everything about what?""

"The program. The children. Your agreement.""

"I never agreed to anything.""

His voice became colder.

"You signed it.""

"No, I didn't.""

"Your mother told you about the complications during childbirth, didn't she?""

I said nothing.

"She probably told you I arranged additional monitoring.""

"She told me you forged my signature.""

Rick exhaled.

"Your father always did enjoy making me look like a criminal.""

"Was he wrong?""

A long pause.

Then Rick said:

"Come inside.""

The call ended.

Morgan turned toward me.

"Stay here.""

He got out.

I watched him walk toward the entrance.

Two officers followed.

For nearly three minutes, nothing happened.

Then a side door opened.

A man came out.

Lazlo.

He looked around the parking lot.

One officer approached him.

Lazlo raised both hands.

The other officer moved inside.

Then Morgan's voice came through the radio.

"Target located. Child present.""

I jumped out of the vehicle.

An officer immediately blocked me.

"Ma'am, stay back.""

"That's my daughter!""

"We have her.""

I heard shouting inside.

Then a crash.

A door slammed.

Morgan came running out.

"Claire!""

"Where's Lily?""

"She's safe.""

He guided me inside.

The building smelled of dust and old disinfectant.

A narrow corridor led to a large room filled with filing cabinets and computer equipment.

Lily sat on a chair near the wall.

A female officer was beside her.

The moment she saw me, she jumped up.

"Mommy!""

I ran to her.

She wrapped both arms around my waist.

"You're here!""

"I'm here, baby.""

I kissed her hair.

"Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy said you wouldn't come.""

I closed my eyes.

"I'm always coming for you.""

Across the room, Rick was standing beside a desk.

His hands were cuffed behind him.

He looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

"You shouldn't have brought the police.""

I stared at him.

"You shouldn't have taken our daughter.""

He shook his head.

"You've ruined everything.""

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Everything?""

"The research. The funding. The work my mother started.""

I looked around the room.

"Your mother?""

Rick nodded toward the photograph on the wall.

"She spent thirty years trying to understand how memory works. She believed children could be helped by studying their responses to stressful experiences.""

I looked at Lily.

She was holding my hand.

"Your mother experimented on children?""

"She was a respected medical administrator.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Rick looked away.

"My mother believed the brain could be trained to forget traumatic experiences.""

"And you decided to test that on our daughter?""

"It wasn't like that.""

"Then what was it like?""

He raised his voice.

"We were trying to develop a treatment!""

"For whom?""

"For children who experienced trauma!""

I stared at him.

"By making children unconscious?""

His jaw tightened.

"Everything was monitored.""

"By whom?""

He didn't answer.

I looked at Morgan.

He was examining a computer terminal.

"Detective, I think you need to see this.""

Morgan walked over.

A screen displayed several folders.

Each folder contained a child's name.

Lily Bennett.

Emily Carter.

Mason Reed.

And three others.

Inside Lily's folder were photographs, school reports, medical notes, and recordings.

There were also videos.

I turned away.

I couldn't look at another image of my daughter in that place.

Then Morgan opened a document.

It was titled:

*PHASE TWO — PARENTAL COMPLIANCE AND MEMORY RESPONSE.*

He scrolled down.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He turned the monitor toward me.

The document contained a list of planned actions.

One line read:

If parental questioning increases, initiate alternative custody narrative.

Below it:

Prepare documentation supporting maternal instability.

And another:

Transfer child to approved guardian if necessary.

I felt sick.

"Approved guardian?""

Morgan looked at Rick.

"Who was supposed to take Lily?""

Rick remained silent.

Lazlo suddenly spoke from the doorway.

"Vonda.""

Everyone turned.

He was standing beside an officer, his face pale.

"Vonda was supposed to take her.""

Rick glared at him.

"Shut up.""

Lazlo looked at me.

"She was going to say Claire couldn't care for Lily. She had documents ready.""

I stared at him.

"You knew?""

He looked down.

"I didn't know how far it had gone.""

"You carried my daughter around while she was unconscious.""

His eyes filled.

"Rick told me it was temporary.""

I stepped closer.

"You watched her cry.""

He swallowed.

"Yes.""

"You heard her ask for me.""

He couldn't answer.

I felt something inside me break.

"Why?""

Lazlo finally looked up.

"Because Rick paid me.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"How much?""

"Two thousand dollars a week.""

I took a step backward.

My brother-in-law.

The man who had held Lily as a newborn.

The man who had attended every birthday.

Two thousand dollars a week.

That was what he had accepted to betray her.

Then Morgan opened another file.

"Claire, there's something else.""

The document contained a photograph of my hospital bracelet from the night Lily was born.

Underneath it was a scanned consent form.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

But beside it was a second signature.

Rick Bennett.

And beneath both names was a third.

*DR. ELEANOR BENNETT.*

Rick's mother.

The date was the night Lily was born.

I stared at the form.

"What does this authorize?""

Morgan read the heading.

"Enrollment in a long-term observational program.""

I looked at Rick.

"You enrolled her before she was born?""

He didn't answer.

Then I noticed something else.

A paragraph near the bottom.

*In the event of parental disagreement, the biological contributor's consent shall take precedence for research-related decisions.*

I read it twice.

"Biological contributor?""

Morgan looked at Rick.

"Who is Lily's biological father?""

The silence was immediate.

Rick's face changed.

I felt the room spin.

"Rick?""

He looked at the floor.

Then he said:

"Your mother should have told you.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What does that mean?""

Rick raised his eyes.

And for the first time that night, he looked genuinely afraid.

"Claire, Lily isn't biologically mine.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Your father was.""

The words seemed to echo through the room.

My father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had died two years earlier.

The man who had apparently been protecting a secret I never knew existed.

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

Rick looked at the document.

"Your father donated genetic material years before you met me. Your mother knew. I found out when I accessed the original hospital records.""

My stomach turned.

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"Why would my father—"

"Because he knew about the program. He was trying to stop it.""

I looked at Morgan.

He was reading the document again.

Then he said something that made the entire room go silent.

"Mr. Bennett, this form doesn't establish biological parentage. And it certainly doesn't establish any legal right to conduct research on a child.""

Rick's face tightened.

Morgan continued.

"We'll be obtaining independent records and genetic evidence.""

I turned back toward my husband.

"Why did you marry me?""

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the man I had once loved.

Then he said:

"Because your father had something I needed.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Rick glanced toward the filing cabinet.

"The original records.""

He nodded toward a locked drawer.

"The truth about Lily's birth is in there.""

Morgan ordered an officer to open it.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

I opened it with trembling fingers.

There was a letter.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed my father holding a newborn baby.

Lily.

On the back, he had written:

My beautiful granddaughter. I wish I could tell you the truth before someone else does.

I unfolded the letter.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

Claire, if you're reading this, then Rick has finally discovered what I spent seven years trying to protect you from.

And the last paragraph contained a name.

Not Rick's.

Not Vonda's.

A name I had never expected to see in connection with any of this.

*Your mother knew everything from the beginning.*

I looked up.

And suddenly, I understood why my mother had begged me not to tell Rick about our conversation.

May you like

She hadn't simply been hiding a document.

She had been hiding her own part in what happened to Lily.
