Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Daughter's Birth

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

Patricia believed Sophia should have been hers.

Rachel sat across from me, her hands folded over the folder, while the café continued around us. A waitress laughed near the counter. Someone dropped a spoon. Outside, a delivery truck rumbled past the window.

Ordinary sounds.

An ordinary morning.

And yet everything I believed about my family had just been turned upside down.

"What exactly are you telling me?"" I asked.

Rachel didn't look away.

"I'm telling you that Patricia and Emily had a relationship before you met Patricia. They were once very close. When Emily became pregnant, Patricia believed she had a right to be involved in the child's life.""

"Involved how?""

"She wanted to be the child's legal guardian.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed Emily had promised her that they would raise the baby together.""

I stared at the documents.

"Emily never told me anything about this.""

"She was afraid you'd misunderstand.""

"Understand what?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Michael, Emily and Patricia were once partners in a small business. They were close friends for years. When that relationship ended, things became bitter. Patricia believed Emily had taken something from her.""

"What?""

"Her future. That's how Patricia described it.""

I shook my head.

"This makes no sense. Emily was my wife. We planned our family together.""

"I know.""

"Then why would Patricia think she had a claim to our daughter?""

Rachel opened the folder and pulled out a letter.

"Because Emily wrote this shortly before Sophia was born.""

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was Emily's.

The letter was addressed to Patricia.

You cannot make me choose between you and my child. Sophia will have a home with Michael. He will love her, protect her, and give her the stability we once promised each other.

I read it twice.

The words blurred.

Rachel continued quietly.

"Patricia believed Emily had betrayed her by choosing you. She thought she could change Emily's mind after the baby was born.""

"And the date?""

"October fourteenth was the original date recorded in the maternity ward. Emily gave birth that night. You were present, but you were called away briefly when a nurse asked you to complete paperwork in another office.""

I remembered that night.

I'd been exhausted, frightened, and overwhelmed. Emily had suffered complications after delivery, and the doctors had asked me to sign several documents.

I had trusted them.

I had trusted everyone.

"What happened while I was gone?""

Rachel took a breath.

"Patricia arrived at the hospital. Dr. Harris allowed her into the maternity ward.

Emily was recovering, and she was frightened. She believed Patricia had come to take the baby.""

"Did she?""

"Not physically. But Patricia persuaded Dr. Harris to make changes to the records. The official birth date was altered, and a consent form was created suggesting that Emily had agreed to a temporary guardianship arrangement.""

I stared at the signature on the document.

"It looks like mine.""

"Someone copied it from another form.""

"Why?""

"To make the arrangement appear legitimate.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"And you let this happen?""

Rachel flinched.

"I was twenty-nine years old. Dr. Harris was my supervisor.

He told me the paperwork was a temporary measure to protect the baby while Emily recovered. By the time I realized what he'd done, Patricia had threatened to report me for stealing confidential records.""

"So you stayed silent.""

"Yes.""

The word came out like a confession.

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me did.

But I also saw the fear in her face, and I understood that silence could become a habit when speaking up seemed dangerous.

That didn't make it right.

It only explained how people could fail a child while convincing themselves they were protecting her.

"Where is the original paperwork?"" I asked.

Rachel tapped the folder.

"Some of it is here. But the original consent form and the complete maternity record were removed from the hospital archive.""

"By Patricia?""

"With Dr. Harris's help.""

I leaned back.

"Then why did she marry me?""

Rachel's expression grew grim.

"Because she believed she could eventually become Sophia's legal parent. She thought that if she married you, gained your trust, and convinced you that Sophia needed stricter discipline, you would eventually agree to a guardianship arrangement.""

I remembered Patricia's repeated comments about how overwhelmed I was.

How she said Sophia needed someone with more time.

How she sometimes joked that I should let her handle the difficult decisions because I was too soft.

Every conversation now seemed to contain a hidden meaning.

"She wanted me to sign something," I said.

Rachel nodded.

"An agreement confirming that Patricia had been Sophia's primary caregiver and should have expanded legal authority over her.""

"Did she forge anything else?""

"I don't know. But I believe she has been collecting documents to support her claim.""

I thought about the black notebook, the brown box, and the email about everything being settled once I signed the agreement.

Then I remembered Sophia's frightened question.

Even if I'm not really your daughter?

I stood so quickly that the table shook.

"I'm taking my daughter away from that house.""

Rachel rose too.

"Michael, don't confront Patricia alone. She's been planning this for years. She knows how to make herself look reasonable and everyone else look unstable.""

"I don't care how she looks.""

"You should care about what she might do next.""

I stopped.

Rachel reached into her bag and removed a small flash drive.

"I copied these files before I left the hospital. They include the original delivery log and a scanned note Emily wrote after the birth.""

"Why didn't you give these to the authorities?""

"Because I was afraid. And because I thought Patricia had destroyed the evidence that mattered.""

She placed the drive in my hand.

"There's one more thing you need to know.""

"What?""

"Emily wasn't afraid that Patricia would take Sophia away from her.""

I stared at her.

"Then what was she afraid of?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"She was afraid Patricia would convince you that Emily had lied about something important.""

Before I could ask what that meant, my phone rang.

Laura.

I answered immediately.

"What's wrong?""

"Michael, you need to come home.""

Her voice trembled.

"What's happened?""

"Patricia came back. She said she's taking Sophia to see a specialist because you're emotionally unstable.""

I stood frozen.

"Where is Sophia?""

"Upstairs. Patricia has packed a suitcase.""

My blood turned cold.

"Don't let her take Sophia anywhere.""

"I tried. She said she has documents proving she has the right to take her.""

I grabbed the folder and rushed toward the café exit.

Then Laura said something that made my heart stop.

"Michael, she showed me the document with your signature. And she says if you interfere, she'll tell the court that Sophia isn't your biological daughter.""

I ended the call and ran to my car.

I had spent nine years believing that being a father meant providing food, shelter, and love.

Now I understood that it also meant recognizing when someone was trying to take your child while making you believe you had no right to stop them.

And Patricia had been preparing for that moment since before Sophia could even speak.

When I reached home, her car was already in the driveway.

The front door stood open.

I ran inside.

Patricia was standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding Sophia's suitcase in one hand and a thick folder in the other.

Sophia stood behind Laura, crying.

Patricia looked at me and smiled.

"You're just in time, Michael.""

May you like

She lifted the folder.

"Now we can finally discuss who Sophia really belongs to.""
