Chapter 9: The Last Thing My Father Hid

Richard met me at his office the following morning.

The building was old, with dark wooden floors and framed photographs of commercial properties lining the hallway.

He was waiting in a conference room.

On the table sat a sealed envelope, a thick accounting ledger, and a small black notebook.

I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.

My hands trembled as I picked up the envelope.

"Is this the one from your email?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father gave instructions that it was not to be opened unless someone attempted to take control of your inheritance without your consent.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you give it to me sooner?""

"Because the condition had not been met. Your father was very specific.""

I broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dearest Emily,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I desperately hoped you would never have to face.

I swallowed.

I have concerns about Daniel Carter and his mother. I believe they are interested in more than your happiness. I have tried to warn you, but I know how difficult it is to hear criticism of someone you love.

My eyes blurred.

Please understand that your inheritance is not simply money. It represents years of work, trust, and promises made between people who believed in doing business honestly.

I continued.

If Patricia ever attempts to access the properties or their proceeds, ask Richard for the black ledger. It contains the records I could not safely keep in my office.

I looked at the notebook.

Then I read the final paragraph.

There is one person whose name you must pay attention to. He helped me discover the truth, and he may be the only person who can explain why Daniel chose you.

The letter ended with my father's signature.

I pressed it against my chest.

For a moment, I was twenty-three again.

I could almost hear his voice telling me to stop worrying about money and enjoy being young.

I wished I'd asked him more questions.

I wished I'd known how much he had been trying to protect me.

Richard waited until I placed the letter down.

"Would you like to see the ledger?""

I nodded.

He opened the black notebook.

The pages were filled with dates, transaction amounts, company names, and handwritten notes.

Several entries were highlighted.

I recognized Patricia's name.

Between 2012 and 2015, multiple payments had been transferred from the property partnership into companies controlled by her.

The amounts were staggering.

$18,000.

$32,500.

$47,000.

$61,000.

I turned another page.

There was a company called Carter Family Consulting.

It had received more than $200,000.

"Was this Patricia's company?""

Richard nodded.

"She controlled it through an intermediary.""

I looked at the dates.

Some of the transfers occurred while my father was still alive.

Others happened after his death.

"Did she have permission?""

"Not for most of them.""

I stared at the final column.

My father had written notes beside certain transactions.

Unauthorized.

False invoice.

Duplicate payment.

Personal expenses disguised as maintenance.

I felt sick.

"How much did she take?""

Richard turned to the summary page.

"Based on the records we have, approximately $640,000.""

I covered my mouth.

"Did my father know?""

"Yes. He discovered the discrepancies shortly before he died.""

"Why didn't he report her?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"He wanted to recover the money without destroying the family. Patricia was your husband's mother, and Daniel was already involved with him professionally.""

I shook my head.

"He was trying to protect me.""

"Yes.""

I turned another page.

A name appeared at the bottom.

*Jonathan Pierce.*

I looked up.

"Who is this?""

Richard's expression changed.

"Your father's accountant.""

"Where is he now?""

"He disappeared shortly after your father's death.""

I frowned.

"Disappeared?""

"He resigned from the accounting firm and moved abroad, according to the information we have.""

"Why is his name important?""

Richard pointed to a note written beside it.

Jonathan has original copies of every transfer. If anything happens to me, contact him before allowing anyone to alter the partnership records.

I looked at Richard.

"Did you ever contact him?""

"We tried. The email address was inactive.""

I took out my phone and photographed the page.

Then I searched the name.

There were several results.

One belonged to an accounting firm in Boston.

Another showed a professional profile for a Jonathan Pierce who had recently returned to the United States.

The photograph was older, but I recognized him.

He was standing beside my father in a picture I'd seen many times as a child.

"Richard, I think I found him.""

Richard leaned over.

His eyes widened.

"That's Jonathan.""

I opened the profile.

He was now a financial compliance consultant based in Massachusetts.

I sent a brief message explaining who I was and asking him to contact me.

Then Richard handed me another document.

It was a copy of the attempted property transfer.

The buyer's company was listed as VM Hospitality Group.

The proposed sale price was $4.2 million.

But something was wrong.

The agreement also contained a separate payment arrangement.

$1.1 million was to be transferred to a private account after closing.

The account holder was Patricia Carter.

I looked at Richard.

"She was going to receive more than a million dollars?""

"Yes.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She was listed as the company representative. There was a separate management payment of $250,000.""

I shook my head.

"So Daniel was using Vanessa's company to sell my father's properties, Patricia was getting paid, and I was supposed to sign away everything.""

"That's what the documents suggest.""

I sat back.

Then I noticed another name.

A beneficiary listed in the final payment instructions.

Not Patricia.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

A person named Michael Carter.

I frowned.

"Who is Michael Carter?""

Richard looked at me carefully.

"Daniel's younger brother.""

I remembered him.

Michael had attended our wedding but rarely visited afterward.

He lived in another state and worked in real estate.

"Why would he receive money?""

"I don't know. But his name appears in several older partnership documents.""

I opened the black notebook again.

There was a page marked with a red tab.

My father's handwriting was larger there.

Michael Carter is not Daniel's biological brother.

I looked up.

"What?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"Your father believed Michael was Patricia's son from a relationship before her marriage.""

"Why does that matter?""

"Because Michael was also involved in the original property business. He was the person who first alerted your father to the missing money.""

I stared at the page.

"Then why is he receiving money from this sale?""

Richard didn't answer.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Emily Hayes?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Jonathan Pierce. I received your message.""

I sat straighter.

"Mr. Pierce. I've been trying to find you.""

"I know who you are. Your father spoke about you often.""

"Do you have the original accounting records?""

"I do.""

"Can you explain what happened?""

He paused.

"Emily, before I do, I need to ask you something. Has Daniel contacted you about a man named Michael?""

I looked at Richard.

"Yes. His name appears in the proposed sale documents.""

Jonathan exhaled.

"Then things have gone further than I feared.""

"What does Michael have to do with this?""

"Michael was the person who helped your father uncover Patricia's theft. But he wasn't working alone.""

"Who was he working with?""

Jonathan's voice became quieter.

"Daniel.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What?""

"Daniel helped your father investigate his own mother. He provided bank records and internal correspondence. Your father trusted him because he believed Daniel was trying to expose Patricia.""

I remembered the photograph.

Daniel standing beside my father.

The business card.

The handwritten warning.

"Then why did my father write that Daniel wanted to marry me for my inheritance?""

"Because after the investigation, Daniel changed sides.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why?""

"Patricia offered him a share of the money if he helped her regain control of the properties.""

I closed my eyes.

Jonathan continued.

"But there is something else you need to know. The missing $640,000 was only part of the story.""

"What do you mean?""

"Your father discovered that Patricia had been moving money through an account belonging to someone else. He believed the account was connected to a larger fraud.""

"Whose account?""

Jonathan hesitated.

Then he said a name.

"Laura Bennett.""

My heart stopped.

"Daniel's first wife?""

"Yes. Her identity had been used to establish one of the companies involved in the transfers.""

I remembered Laura's story.

The loans.

The credit cards.

The documents she had signed without understanding them.

I suddenly realized she hadn't simply been another victim of Daniel's affairs.

She had been part of the financial scheme without knowing it.

"Did Laura know?""

"No. Your father believed Daniel had used her information without her consent.""

I felt a chill run down my spine.

"Then what happened after my father died?""

Jonathan was silent for a moment.

"Patricia took control of the remaining records. Daniel married you. And the money kept moving.""

I looked at the ledger.

The dates.

The transactions.

The names.

All these years, I'd thought I had married into a difficult family.

I'd actually married into a financial scheme that had started before I knew Daniel existed.

Then Jonathan said something that made everything even worse.

"Emily, I need you to listen carefully. The four-million-dollar property sale is not their real objective.""

"What is?""

"Your father's properties are only the collateral. Daniel and Patricia are trying to obtain something much more valuable.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

"Your father's original partnership shares. If they can transfer those shares, they can take control of every remaining asset, including the trust.""

I looked at Richard.

He was already shaking his head.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Jonathan continued.

"There's one more document your father left with me. It contains the name of the person who legally controls the voting rights if the beneficiary is unable to act.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Who?""

Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Your father named Michael Carter.""

I stared at the name in the payment instructions.

Daniel's younger brother.

The man who had supposedly helped my father expose Patricia.

The man who was now listed to receive money from the fraudulent sale.

I looked at Richard.

"Can you contact Michael?""

He shook his head.

"I haven't spoken to him in years.""

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

This time, it was from Michael Carter.

Emily, I know what Daniel and Patricia are planning. Don't sign anything. And whatever you do, don't trust the documents Richard just showed you.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

Your father made a mistake eleven years ago. He trusted the wrong person.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Richard was standing across from me.

The black ledger lay open between us.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the man who had been helping me uncover the truth was hiding part of it himself.

The phone rang again.

Michael.

I answered.

May you like

His first words were:

"Emily, before you trust Richard Whitmore, you need to know what happened the night your father died.""
