Chapter 9: The Son Who Inherited a Murder

Daniel sat motionless on the edge of the motel bed.

For several minutes, he didn't speak.

Then he opened the envelope and removed a folded document.

It was his original birth certificate.

I looked at it.

"What's wrong?""

Daniel pointed to the section listing his father.

The name was not Robert Carter.

It was Richard Lawson.

I stared.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel shook his head.

"My father raised me. He told me I was his son.""

"Maybe this is a mistake.""

He turned the paper over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Daniel, you deserve the truth. Your biological father is Richard Lawson. Your mother begged me to raise you as my own because she knew what kind of man he was.

The note was signed Robert Carter.

I looked at Daniel.

He seemed unable to breathe.

"Why would Margaret hide this?""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Because my entire life was built on a lie.""

He walked to the window.

Outside, rain began falling.

"Robert was a good man. He taught me everything. He taught me how to build houses, how to run a business, how to treat people.""

He turned around.

"And Richard was the man who destroyed him.""

I took his hand.

"Then why did Richard help raise you?""

"Because he wanted control of the company. Robert left everything to me. Richard couldn't take it legally while I was alive.""

I understood.

"That's why he wanted you dead.""

Daniel nodded.

"And that's why he wanted the original birth certificate. If he could prove I wasn't Robert's biological son, he could challenge the inheritance.""

I sat down.

"But Margaret said Richard murdered Robert.""

Daniel stared at the document.

"I think she knows more than she's telling us.""

We needed the real Margaret.

And we needed to find her before Marianne did.

I called the hospital.

The nurse who had treated Margaret answered.

I explained that we needed to speak with her urgently.

There was a pause.

Then the nurse said something that made my heart stop.

"Mrs. Carter was discharged this morning.""

"Discharged?""

"Yes. A family member signed the papers.""

"Who?""

"Her sister.""

Marianne.

I looked at Daniel.

He was already reaching for his keys.

We drove toward the old Carter farmhouse.

This time, we didn't use the main road.

Daniel knew the property well. He had spent summers there as a child.

We parked two streets away and approached through the woods.

The house was dark.

But a light was visible in the basement window.

Daniel pointed toward it.

"She's down there.""

We entered through the back door.

The kitchen was empty.

A cup of tea sat on the table.

Beside it was a small bottle of medication.

I picked it up.

The label had been removed.

Daniel examined the bottle.

"Victor Hale.""

"What?""

"That's his handwriting. He used to prepare my prescriptions.""

Before I could respond, we heard a voice downstairs.

"Marianne, please. I told you everything.""

It was Margaret.

Daniel rushed toward the basement.

I grabbed his arm.

"Wait.""

We listened.

Marianne answered.

"Not everything. You still haven't told me where Robert's original will is.""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I burned it.""

A loud slap followed.

Daniel's face twisted with anger.

He moved toward the stairs.

I caught him again.

"Let me go first.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

I took his hand.

"We need her alive. We need her confession.""

He finally nodded.

I quietly descended the stairs.

The basement smelled of damp concrete.

Margaret was tied to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

Marianne stood in front of her, holding a glass of water.

She looked almost identical to Margaret.

But now that I knew the truth, I could see the differences.

Marianne's hair was darker.

Her smile was colder.

And she wore a gold ring on her right hand.

The same ring I had seen in the photograph beside Dr. Hale.

I stepped into the light.

"Marianne.""

She turned.

For a second, she looked surprised.

Then she smiled.

"Emily. How thoughtful of you to come.""

Daniel appeared behind me.

"Let her go.""

Marianne laughed.

"There's my boy.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Don't call me that.""

She tilted her head.

"Why? You finally discovered who your father was?""

Margaret began crying.

"Daniel, I'm sorry.""

He looked at her.

"Tell me the truth.""

Marianne raised her glass.

"Your mother has been keeping secrets for thirty years. Perhaps we should let her tell the story.""

She pulled a chair closer.

"Robert Carter discovered that Richard was stealing from the company. He confronted him. There was a fight. Robert fell down the stairs.""

"Did Richard push him?"" Daniel asked.

Marianne smiled.

"I did.""

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Why?""

"Because Robert was going to destroy everything.""

"Everything?""

"The company. The money. The life Richard and I had built.""

Margaret struggled against the ropes.

"You killed my husband!""

Marianne looked at her.

"Your husband? You mean the man who raised another man's child?""

Margaret broke down.

Daniel's voice became cold.

"Was Richard there?""

"Of course.""

"And he let you kill Robert?""

"He helped me clean up.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

For the first time, I saw him cry.

Not because he had discovered Richard was his biological father.

But because the man he had called Dad had been murdered by the people who raised him.

Marianne placed her glass on the table.

"Now, Daniel, let's discuss the inheritance.""

She held out her hand.

"The documents.""

Daniel slowly removed the envelope from his jacket.

"Let my mother go.""

Marianne smiled.

"Give me the documents first.""

He hesitated.

I stepped closer to Margaret.

Marianne noticed.

"Don't even think about it.""

I froze.

Then I saw something beneath the table.

A small metal object.

Margaret's wedding ring.

She had been using it to cut through the rope.

I met her eyes.

She gave the smallest nod.

Daniel handed Marianne the envelope.

She opened it.

Inside was the original birth certificate.

And a second document.

Robert Carter's will.

Marianne's eyes widened.

"Where did you get this?""

Daniel smiled faintly.

"From the only person who ever truly protected me.""

Marianne looked confused.

Then she opened the will.

The first page listed Daniel as the sole heir.

But the second page contained a clause that made her face turn white.

If Daniel died under suspicious circumstances, all company assets would automatically transfer to a charitable trust administered by an independent legal foundation.

Marianne dropped the document.

"You knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"Robert knew what Richard was capable of. He prepared for it.""

Marianne reached for her gun.

Margaret suddenly pulled her hands free and knocked the glass from the table.

It shattered.

Daniel lunged.

The gun went off.

I screamed.

A bullet struck the basement wall.

Marianne stumbled backward.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

The gun fell beneath the stairs.

Margaret rushed toward her son.

But before we could move, the basement door opened.

Richard Lawson stood at the top of the stairs.

Behind him was Dr. Victor Hale.

Richard looked at the fallen gun.

Then at the will.

Finally, he looked at Daniel.

"Well," he said quietly.

"This family reunion has gone on long enough.""

He raised his own weapon.

"Give me the documents.""

Daniel stepped in front of Margaret.

Richard smiled.

"You really are Robert's son in every way that matters.""

Then he pointed the gun at Daniel's chest.

"But unfortunately, you're still my biological mistake.""

A siren sounded outside.

Richard's expression changed.

He looked at Marianne.

"What did you do?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

Then Dr. Hale reached into his coat and removed a phone.

"Richard, we have a serious problem.""

He turned the screen toward him.

A live video was playing.

It showed everything that had happened in the basement.

Every confession.

Every threat.

Every admission about Robert's murder.

I looked at the phone.

Then at Dr. Hale.

He was smiling.

"I believe the police are already listening.""

Richard turned on him.

"You recorded us?""

Dr. Hale nodded.

"Not just this conversation.""

He looked at Daniel.

"Your father left me something twenty years ago. I've been waiting for the right moment to deliver it.""

Daniel stared.

"What?""

Dr. Hale reached into his coat again.

This time, he removed a small photograph.

It showed Robert Carter standing beside a little boy.

The boy was Daniel.

On the back was a message.

To my son. If you ever discover the truth, remember that I chose you.

Daniel began crying.

Then Dr. Hale spoke the words that changed everything.

"Richard Lawson may be your biological father, Daniel.""

He paused.

"But he wasn't the only man who helped bring you into this world.""

Richard suddenly went pale.

And Margaret whispered:

"Victor, don't you dare tell him.""

Dr. Hale looked directly at Daniel.

"Your real mother wasn't Margaret Carter.""

The basement went silent.

"Your mother was Claire Bennett.""

Daniel stared at him.

I felt the room tilt.

Claire.

The woman whose photograph had appeared in the storage unit.

The woman everyone had claimed was dead.

Dr. Hale continued.

"Robert adopted you as an infant. Margaret raised you. And Richard spent thirty years trying to make sure you never discovered that the woman who gave birth to you was still alive.""

Daniel's voice broke.

"Where is she?""

Dr. Hale looked toward the basement door.

Then he said:

"She's standing upstairs.""

We all turned.

A woman appeared in the doorway.

Long brown hair.

A pale face.

And a familiar silver bracelet around her wrist.

She looked at Daniel.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

May you like

"Hello, my son.""

And for the first time in thirty years, Daniel saw his real mother.
