Chapter 8: My Mother-in-Law's Final Confession
I stared at Daniel.
"What do you mean she's not supposed to be alive?""
He didn't answer.
Outside, Margaret knocked again.
"Daniel, please!""
Daniel moved toward the small window.
He looked through a gap in the wooden boards.
Then he stepped backward.
"That's not my mother.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"But I saw her at the hospital.""
"I know.""
"She was injured. The doctors treated her.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Emily, my mother has a distinctive scar on her left hand. She got it when I was a child. That woman doesn't have it.""
I remembered the garage.
The dark lights.
The confusion.
The woman who had grabbed my arm.
I had barely looked at her.
The knock came again.
"Daniel, open the door!""
He raised one finger to his lips.
Then he took my phone and switched it off.
A few seconds later, the woman outside stopped knocking.
"Fine," she said.
Her voice had changed.
"Then I'll have to do this another way.""
A loud crash came from the farmhouse.
Daniel grabbed the envelope.
"There's another exit.""
He pulled aside a stack of old wooden boards, revealing a narrow passage leading beneath the building.
We crawled through it.
The passage ended behind a row of trees.
A black sedan was parked nearby.
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Do you know how to drive?""
"Yes.""
"Good.""
He handed me the keys.
We drove for nearly forty minutes before he finally told me where we were going.
A small motel near Hartford.
The room was old, with yellow curtains and a broken lamp.
Daniel locked the door and checked the bathroom window.
Then he sat on the edge of the bed.
I stood in front of him.
"You're going to tell me everything.""
He nodded.
"No more secrets.""
"No more lies.""
He looked at me.
"Agreed.""
He began with Claire.
Seven years earlier, Daniel had discovered that Richard was stealing money from the family business.
He had confronted him.
Richard responded by threatening Claire, who controlled the majority of the company's shares.
Daniel tried to negotiate.
Instead, Richard arranged the car accident.
Claire survived, but the medical records were altered. She was moved to a private facility and placed under a false identity.
Daniel believed she had died.
For years, he carried that guilt.
Then, three months ago, someone sent him evidence that Claire was alive.
It was Vanessa.
"Why would Vanessa help you?"" I asked.
"Because she wanted Richard's position.""
"She wanted to replace him?""
Daniel nodded.
"She had been stealing money from him for years. She wanted me to expose Richard so she could take control of the company.""
"And Dr. Hale?""
"Victor was paid to provide medical cover. He had access to experimental drugs and private medical records. Vanessa convinced him to help stage my disappearance.""
I sat down.
"So you agreed to fake your death.""
"Yes.""
"And you never considered telling me?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I thought if you knew, Richard would use you against me.""
I stared at him.
"Instead, he did exactly that.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I know.""
I wanted to forgive him.
But forgiveness felt impossible when I remembered the coffin, the funeral, and the weeks I had spent believing the man I loved was dead.
Then he reached into his jacket.
"I have something else.""
He placed a small photograph in my hand.
It showed Margaret sitting at a kitchen table.
Beside her was a woman wearing a hospital gown.
The woman looked exactly like Margaret.
Only younger.
I frowned.
"Who is this?""
"My mother.""
"Then who was the woman at the workshop?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Margaret has a twin sister.""
I stared at him.
"She never told me.""
"Nobody outside the family knew.""
"What's her name?""
"Marianne.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why would Marianne pretend to be your mother?""
"Because she was involved with Richard long before I was born.""
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Daniel continued.
"My mother tried to expose Richard years ago. Marianne helped him. They switched identities during the investigation. Eventually, everyone believed Marianne had moved overseas.""
"And she didn't?""
"She stayed close. She became one of Richard's most useful people.""
I remembered the hospital.
The injured woman.
The missing scar.
It all made sense.
But one question remained.
"What happened to the real Margaret?""
Daniel looked at me.
"She's been missing for eleven days.""
My chest tightened.
"Then who showed me the photograph?""
"Marianne.""
"Why?""
"To make you believe she was helping you.""
He took my hand.
"She wanted you to find Claire's storage unit. She knew Vanessa would follow you there. They were using you to draw me out.""
I stood abruptly.
"So the whole thing was a trap?""
Daniel nodded.
A terrible silence followed.
Then my phone, which had been switched off, suddenly vibrated.
I looked down.
It was an incoming call.
Margaret Carter.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A weak female voice whispered.
"Emily?""
I froze.
"Margaret?""
"Yes, sweetheart. Listen carefully. I don't have much time.""
Daniel stood.
"Put it on speaker.""
I did.
Margaret was crying.
"Where is Daniel?""
"He's with me.""
"Oh, thank God.""
Daniel moved closer.
"Mother, where are you?""
A sob escaped her.
"I'm at the old house. In the basement.""
"Who put you there?""
"Marianne.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Margaret continued.
"She came here pretending to be me. She wanted the company documents. I refused. She hit me and locked me in the cellar.""
"Are you hurt?""
"My shoulder. But that's not important.""
Her breathing became uneven.
"Daniel, there's something you need to know about your father.""
Daniel froze.
"My father?""
"Yes. Richard didn't start this business. He didn't even own the original company.""
I looked at Daniel.
Margaret's voice trembled.
"Your father left everything to you. But before he died, he discovered that Richard and Marianne had been stealing from him.""
Daniel whispered:
"That's impossible. Father died of a heart attack.""
"No, sweetheart.""
A long silence.
Then Margaret said:
"Your father was murdered.""
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
"Who did it?""
Margaret began crying.
"Your mother knows.""
The call suddenly crackled.
Then we heard a man's voice in the background.
"That's enough, Margaret.""
Daniel shouted.
"Mother!""
The line went dead.
I looked at him.
He was shaking.
Then his phone rang.
A text message appeared.
It contained a photograph of Margaret tied to a chair in a dark basement.
Underneath it were seven words.
Bring the original documents. Come alone.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
I caught his arm.
"No.""
"She's my mother.""
"She's also the only person who can tell us the truth about your father.""
He looked at me.
"Then we're going.""
I shook my head.
"Not without a plan.""
Daniel stared at me for a moment.
Then something changed in his expression.
For the first time since I had known him, he seemed to understand that I wasn't the frightened woman waiting for someone else to save her.
I took the flash drive from his hand.
"You're going to stay here and let me handle something.""
"Emily, absolutely not.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was an old document bearing Daniel's father's signature.
But beneath it was another signature.
Margaret Carter.
And beside her name was a handwritten confession.
I knew what they did to my husband. I helped them bury the truth.
I looked at Daniel.
"Your mother isn't just a witness.""
He stared at the paper.
"She's involved.""
Before he could answer, another message arrived.
This time, it was from Margaret.
Emily, if you want to save Daniel, don't bring him to the house.
Bring the original birth certificate.
I frowned.
"Birth certificate?""
Daniel took the phone.
He read the message twice.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"That's why they never wanted me to find out.""
