Chapter 4: The Daughter Named in the Trust
For several seconds, nobody in the dining room seemed capable of speaking.
I stared at the document Vanessa had placed before me. My name appeared beneath Richard Whitmore's signature, typed in black ink beside a phrase that made no sense.
Beneficiary of the original Northstar trust: Emily Hayes.
My mother had been dead for twelve years.
I had never heard of Northstar until three days ago.
And now my husband's mistress was telling me that a company connected to our missing house money had somehow belonged to my family before I was even born.
"Explain it," I said.
Vanessa folded her hands in front of her.
"Your mother established the original trust with Richard.""
Richard's chair scraped backward.
"That is enough.""
"No," I said, turning toward him.
"It isn't.""
"Emily, this is a complicated family matter.""
"My mother's name is on that document. My name is on that document. My savings are in your son's company. I think I've earned an explanation.""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"Vanessa is manipulating you. She's been doing it to me for months.""
Vanessa gave him a look of open disgust.
"That's rich coming from the man who told his wife he was attending a business meeting while using her money to pay my company.""
"Your company?"" I repeated.
She ignored him.
"Northstar was originally created to manage a private investment trust. The trust held commercial property, securities, and several other assets. Your mother was one of its original beneficiaries.""
"Was she an investor?""
"More than that.""
Richard slammed his palm against the table.
"Vanessa, you have no authority to disclose those records.""
"Neither does Daniel have authority to move money out of an account belonging to his wife.""
The room went quiet again.
I looked at Richard.
"Did you know my mother?""
He lowered himself into his chair. For the first time since I'd known him, the powerful businessman looked old.
"Yes.""
"How?""
Richard glanced at Margaret, who was watching him with an expression I couldn't decipher.
"Your mother and I worked together when we were young," he said.
"She was an exceptionally intelligent woman. She helped establish a private investment structure with several other people.""
"Why didn't she ever tell me?""
"I don't know.""
"That's convenient.""
He flinched.
Vanessa opened her folder and removed another sheet.
"Your mother died before the trust was fully settled. Her share was placed in a protected account until you reached the age specified in the original agreement.""
I looked at the page.
There were figures in the margin, dates, and the seal of a financial institution.
"How much?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"At the time the trust was last independently valued, your beneficial interest was worth several million dollars.""
My knees weakened.
Daniel stepped toward me.
"Emily, sweetheart, listen to me.""
I backed away.
"Don't call me that.""
He stopped.
"I didn't know the trust was yours.""
"Then why did you use my signature to guarantee Northstar's debts?""
"I thought the agreement was legitimate.""
"You thought?""
He ran a hand through his hair.
"Vanessa told me the business needed temporary financing. She said the trust was dormant and that Richard had already approved the restructuring.""
Richard's face hardened.
"I approved no such thing.""
"She showed me documents!""
"Documents you apparently never bothered to verify.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"You told me everything was authorized.""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"I told you the business needed money. You were the one who insisted on moving funds before the next review.""
"Because you said we'd lose the opportunity!""
"And you decided to finance it with money stolen from your own wife.""
"Enough!"" Margaret cried.
Her voice cracked across the room.
She had spent years defending Daniel whenever his father criticized him. I had watched her excuse missed birthdays, forgotten promises, and his habit of treating other people's time as less valuable than his own.
But now she looked at him with tears shining in her eyes.
"You lied to Emily," she said.
"You lied to us. And you brought another woman into our home while claiming you were building a future for your wife.""
Daniel lowered his head.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Then I remembered the hotel. The envelope. The way he had kissed Vanessa beneath the lights while our savings disappeared.
The sympathy vanished.
"Who actually owns Northstar?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at Richard.
"That depends on which set of records you believe.""
Richard stood.
"She is deliberately confusing the issue. The original company was created by me, Eleanor, and two other investors. Its ownership was subsequently restructured.""
"Without my knowledge?""
"Your mother's estate was represented by an attorney.""
"Which attorney?""
He hesitated.
Vanessa answered for him.
"Martin Cole.""
The name meant nothing to me until Richard's expression changed.
"Martin has been retired for years," he said.
"Retired," Vanessa replied, "but not dead.""
Daniel suddenly looked ill.
I noticed it because his face had gone the same pale shade it had when Claire read Vanessa's message aloud.
"What?"" I asked him.
He shook his head.
"Nothing.""
"Daniel.""
He stared at the document.
"Martin Cole handled some of the paperwork for Northstar. I met him twice.""
"When?""
"Last year.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't relevant.""
Vanessa laughed once.
"That's what he told me when I asked why Martin had requested a copy of Emily's birth certificate.""
The words seemed to drain the warmth from the room.
"My birth certificate?""
Richard slowly turned toward Daniel.
"Why would Martin need that?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I felt a terrible certainty gathering inside me.
"Did someone use my identity to access the trust?""
Vanessa closed her folder.
"I believe someone attempted to transfer control of it. I also believe the money sent through Northstar was only a small part of a much larger arrangement.""
Richard's expression became dangerous.
"You have been in possession of these records for months. Why come here now?""
"Because the final transfer was supposed to happen tonight.""
Daniel looked up sharply.
"Vanessa, you said it was postponed.""
"It was.""
"Then why are you here?""
"Because someone submitted a new authorization this afternoon.""
She removed a printed email from her folder and placed it on the table.
The sender was an account associated with Northstar.
The recipient was the trust's financial custodian.
The subject line read:
*CHANGE OF BENEFICIAL CONTROL — FINAL AUTHORIZATION*
I scanned the message.
It requested that the trust's remaining assets be transferred into a newly established holding company.
The authorization carried my name.
My signature.
And a date from the previous week, when I had been at home with Daniel, believing he was working late.
"I never signed this," I whispered.
Richard took the paper from me.
His hands began to shake.
"This transfer cannot proceed," he said.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Then we have a problem.""
"What problem?""
"The custodian received the original authorization, not a copy.""
Daniel sank into his chair.
I turned toward him.
"Did you send it?""
"No.""
"Did you know about it?""
He stared at me.
For the first time that evening, I believed his answer when he said, "No.""
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unsaved number.
Daniel read it.
His face went white.
"What does it say?"" I demanded.
He turned the screen toward us.
Stop asking about Eleanor Hayes. If Emily learns who her real father is, the entire trust will collapse.
Margaret gasped.
Richard gripped the edge of the table.
May you like
And I realized that the missing money, the forged signatures, and Daniel's affair might all be distractions from a secret that had existed long before my marriage.
A secret about the man who had fathered me.
