Chapter 4: The Debt His Father Had Kept Secret

Daniel stared at the paper as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less devastating.

His father remained standing beside the table, one hand resting on the back of his chair.

“Read it,” Richard said again.

Daniel swallowed.

“‘Daniel, on March 14, three years ago, I transferred one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to you to prevent the bank from foreclosing on your investment property.’”

A murmur traveled around the table.

Patricia's hand flew to her mouth.

Jason stopped arguing with the server about his check.

Daniel lowered the paper.

“Dad, I don't think we need to discuss this in front of everyone.””

Richard's expression didn't change.

“You were happy to let everyone believe you were the generous provider tonight. You told them you had everything handled. Now tell them what you handled with my money.””

Daniel's face reddened.

“I was going to pay you back.””

“When?””

“I've had a difficult few years.””

“You bought a new car eighteen months after I lent you that money.””

“That was financed!””

“And you took your family to Florida.””

“Claire paid for that!””

The words escaped Daniel before he could stop them.

Twenty-two faces turned toward me.

I felt something inside my chest go still.

There it was. The truth he'd spent years disguising with affectionate smiles and promises of partnership.

When money was involved, Daniel remembered exactly whose money it was.

Richard looked at his son with an expression I couldn't quite interpret.

“So you acknowledge that your wife paid for the Florida vacation?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“That's not the point.””

“Then perhaps you can explain the point to me.””

Daniel glanced at the letter.

“I was trying to keep everyone happy. Claire earns more than I do, and she offered to help. You gave me the money for the property because you wanted me to succeed. I thought we all understood that family helps family.””

I almost laughed.

He had taken my words, my sacrifices, and even his father's generosity and arranged them into a story where he was the victim of everyone's expectations.

Richard pulled out his chair and sat down.

“No, Daniel. You understood exactly what you wanted to understand.””

He tapped the paper.

“That money was not a gift. It was a loan. You signed an agreement acknowledging that you would repay it within five years. You also agreed to provide quarterly updates on the property.””

Daniel stared at him.

“I thought you weren't going to enforce the agreement.””

“I never said that.””

“You said you wanted to help me.””

“I did help you. I gave you the money when no bank would lend it to you. I trusted you to act like an adult.””

Richard paused.

“Instead, you stopped sending the reports. You ignored my calls. And when I asked about repayment, you told me your wife was helping you manage your finances.””

My stomach tightened.

I turned toward Daniel.

“You told your father I was managing your finances?””

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Richard answered for him.

“He told me that you knew about the loan and had agreed to help repay it.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“I never agreed to repay your loan,” I said.

“I know that now, Claire.””

Richard reached into the envelope and removed another sheet.

“Two weeks ago, I asked Daniel to bring you to my office so we could discuss the outstanding balance. He told me you were too busy.””

Daniel's head snapped up.

“Dad, please.””

“You told me she was aware of everything. You said there was nothing to discuss.””

Richard placed the second page on the table.

“This is the remaining balance, including the payments you missed under the agreement.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“How much?””

Richard looked directly at him.

“Eighty-seven thousand four hundred dollars.””

Patricia made a small choking sound.

Megan covered her mouth.

Jason whispered, “Jesus.””

Daniel stared at the number.

“That can't be right.””

“It is.””

“I've paid you back!””

“You made three payments. Then you stopped.””

“I had expenses!””

“So did I.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

Richard's voice remained quiet, but there was steel beneath every word.

“You think you're the only person in this family who has bills? You think your mother and I built our lives by spending money we didn't have and hoping someone else would rescue us?””

Patricia lowered her gaze.

Richard continued.

“When I was your age, I worked sixteen-hour days to keep this family fed. I missed holidays. I drove a truck with a broken heater through two winters because I couldn't afford a replacement. And when my father died, I paid his outstanding debts before I bought myself a new coat.””

He leaned closer to Daniel.

“I taught you that being a man meant keeping your word. Somewhere along the way, you decided it meant making promises with other people's money.””

Daniel's eyes glistened, but his voice remained defensive.

“You're making me sound like some kind of criminal.””

“No. I'm describing the choices you've made.””

Then Richard turned to me.

“Claire, I owe you an apology.””

I hadn't expected that.

“For what?””

“For allowing Daniel to tell me that you were part of the arrangement. I should have spoken to you directly. I trusted my son, and I didn't verify what he told me.””

He paused.

“I also should have noticed how often you were paying for things that he claimed to have covered.””

I looked at the untouched scotch beside him.

“Thank you.””

Richard nodded.

“I can't give you back the years you've spent carrying this family financially. But I can make sure my own money is no longer used to protect Daniel from the consequences of his decisions.””

Daniel straightened.

“What does that mean?””

Richard slid the letter toward him.

“It means the repayment agreement stands. You have thirty days to contact my attorney and establish a formal repayment plan. If you don't, I'll pursue the remedies available under the agreement.””

Daniel's face went white.

“You'd sue your own son?””

“I'd hold my own son to his word.””

“Over money?””

“Over trust.””

Daniel looked around the table, searching for someone who might defend him.

His mother looked stricken. Megan stared at her hands. Jason had become fascinated by his empty water glass.

Finally, Daniel turned to me.

“Claire, say something.””

I folded my hands.

“What would you like me to say?””

“Tell him we can work this out as a family.””

“Your father has offered you a way to resolve the debt. You should take it.””

Daniel blinked.

“You're supposed to be on my side.””

“I was on your side when I paid your brother's rent. I was on your side when I covered your mother's property taxes. I was on your side when you promised to repay money you never discussed with me.””

My voice trembled, but I continued.

“Being on your side doesn't mean lying for you.””

Richard's gaze moved between us.

Then he reached into his jacket once more.

This time, he produced a smaller envelope.

Daniel recoiled slightly.

“What now?””

Richard placed it beside the first one.

“This one concerns Claire.””

My heart began to pound.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel reached for it, but Richard put his hand over the envelope.

“Not you. Claire.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a bank transfer receipt dated three years earlier, followed by a letter from Richard's attorney.

The transfer showed that Richard had sent Daniel $120,000.

But the attorney's letter referred to a second transaction.

A payment of $35,000 made from Richard's personal account to a contractor.

The recipient's name was unfamiliar.

The address wasn't.

It was the address of the property Daniel had bought using his father's loan.

I looked up.

“Richard, what is this?””

He glanced at Daniel, whose expression had become unreadable.

“That's the payment your husband never told me about.””

“Payment for what?””

Richard took a breath.

“For a renovation that was supposed to increase the property's value. Daniel told me it had been completed. But when I visited the house last month, I discovered something very different.””

He turned to his son.

“Tell Claire what happened to the thirty-five thousand dollars.””

Daniel didn't move.

Richard's voice sharpened.

“Tell her, Daniel.””

My husband stared at the envelope in my hands.

May you like

Then he whispered three words that made every relative at the table go silent.

“The contractor was Jason.””
