Chapter 4: The Second Infant

For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of the words on the hospital document.

SECOND INFANT.

The paper trembled between my fingers. Beneath the heading were two identification numbers, two sets of measurements, and two separate entries for newborns delivered on October 14, 2021.

One was marked with a handwritten letter A.

The other was marked B.

Beside the second entry, someone had written, Transferred to private neonatal care.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me what this means.””

She pressed both hands against her mouth.

“Daniel, please.””

“No. You don't get to say my name like that anymore. You don't get to cry and expect me to forget what I've seen.””

Her eyes flicked toward Elijah.

That was when I realized she was more frightened of what he might learn than of what the police might do to her.

I held up the document.

“Was there another baby?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Rebecca made a strangled sound from the hidden room.

I turned toward her.

“You knew about this?””

“No,” she whispered.

“I knew I had a son. I knew Vanessa told me he died. But I never knew there was another baby.””

Marcus leaned against the wall, his face gray.

“That's because there wasn't supposed to be another baby,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Explain.””

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“Vanessa's pregnancy wasn't straightforward. She was carrying twins. The doctors discovered it late because she missed several appointments and refused certain scans.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's not how it happened.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You want to tell him? Go ahead.””

She stared at the floor.

I felt as though the room were tilting beneath my feet.

“Twins?”” I repeated.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Identical twins.””

The words struck me with a strange, sickening force.

I looked at Elijah, who sat on the couch holding the sleeve of my shirt.

“Where is the other child?””

Vanessa began to sob.

“I don't know.””

I stepped toward her.

“You don't know?””

“I haven't seen him in years.””

Rebecca gripped the edge of the mattress.

“Years?””

Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut.

“I made a mistake.””

Marcus pushed away from the wall.

“No. You made a decision. Then you made another one to cover the first.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“You helped me!””

“And I've regretted it every day since.””

“Then why didn't you tell him?””

“Because you threatened to destroy my life if I did!””

I raised my voice.

“Enough!””

Both of them fell silent.

Outside, the sirens had stopped. Blue and red lights flickered across the living room curtains.

The police were here.

But I couldn't let anyone leave before I understood what had happened to the second baby.

I crouched in front of Vanessa.

“When you brought Elijah home, you told me the delivery had been difficult. You said the doctors had to monitor him for several hours.””

“They did.””

“Was he the only baby you brought home?””

She looked at me.

Then, after a long pause, she shook her head.

“No.””

My fingers went numb.

“Where did the other baby go?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Marcus answered for her.

“He was taken to a different hospital.””

“Why?””

“Because he needed specialized care.””

“Then why wasn't he brought home?””

Marcus looked toward the document.

“Because Vanessa couldn't explain why there were two babies.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

“Your wife had told everyone she'd given birth to a single child. She'd already arranged the paperwork. When the second infant survived, she panicked.””

Vanessa whispered, “He was so small.””

Rebecca stared at her.

“You took my son, and you gave yours away?””

“I didn't give him away!””

“Then where is he?””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“I was told he'd be adopted by a family who could care for him.””

Marcus let out a hollow laugh.

“You signed the papers.””

“I was told it was temporary!””

“There's no temporary adoption agreement like that.””

I felt a sudden, blinding anger.

“You let someone take your child because you were afraid I would find out you had twins?””

Vanessa looked at me desperately.

“I thought if I could make everything simple, we could be a family.””

“A family?”” I repeated.

“You hid a woman in our house. You lied about the birth of our son. And you gave away another child.””

“I didn't know what else to do!””

“You could have told me the truth!””

She covered her face.

For a moment, the only sound was the faint tapping of rain against the windows.

Then someone pounded on the front door.

“Police! Open the door!””

Marcus moved toward the entrance.

I grabbed his arm.

“Don't even think about leaving.””

He looked down at my hand.

“I wasn't going to.””

I released him and opened the door.

Two uniformed officers entered first, followed by a paramedic carrying a medical bag. A female officer introduced herself as Officer Bennett and asked everyone to remain where they were.

I explained what I'd found.

As soon as I mentioned the hidden room, her expression hardened.

“Where is the woman?””

I pointed toward the opening.

“Inside. Her name is Rebecca Hale. She's been restrained.””

The paramedic hurried into the concealed space.

Officer Bennett turned to Vanessa.

“Ma'am, step away from the wall.””

Vanessa obeyed, trembling.

Another officer separated Marcus from the rest of us. When he attempted to explain that everything was a family misunderstanding, Officer Bennett cut him off.

“A woman has been found tied up inside a concealed room. You can explain your version at the station.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the officer's sleeve.

“Please. You need to understand. I never wanted to hurt anyone.””

Officer Bennett gently removed her hand.

“Then you should have called for help.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel, tell them I love Elijah.””

I couldn't speak.

She tried again.

“Tell them I was a good mother.””

Elijah began to cry.

I pulled him against my chest.

Officer Bennett looked at me, then at the child.

“Sir, we'll need to speak with you separately. For now, keep him with you.””

The paramedic emerged with Rebecca, wrapped in a blanket. She could barely walk, and two officers supported her as they guided her toward the front door.

When she passed Vanessa, she stopped.

For several seconds, the two women stared at each other.

Then Rebecca spoke.

“You could have told me he was alive.””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

“I know.””

“You could have let me see him.””

“I know.””

“You could have let me be his mother.””

Vanessa began to cry so violently that she had to sit down.

Rebecca turned away.

I thought that was the end of it.

Then she looked at me.

“Daniel, there's something else.””

I approached her.

“What?””

She glanced toward the officers, then lowered her voice.

“When I was in the hospital, before Vanessa told everyone my baby had died, I heard a nurse mention that the second infant had been moved to another ward.””

My heart started pounding again.

“Did you see him?””

“No. But I heard the nurse say something about the family requesting a private placement.””

“A family?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She said the people taking the baby were already waiting outside.””

Officer Bennett stepped closer.

“Mrs. Hale, we need to get you medical attention.””

Rebecca caught my wrist before the paramedic could guide her away.

“Daniel, find the other child.””

I looked at the document in my hand.

Two identification numbers.

Two babies.

One living in my house.

The other somewhere in the world, possibly unaware that he had a brother.

Then Rebecca said the words that changed everything.

“The nurse called the second baby by a name.””

I leaned closer.

“What name?””

She swallowed.

“Ethan.””

The room seemed to fall silent around us.

Because that was the name Vanessa had whispered in her sleep for years.

A name I had always assumed belonged to a character from an old childhood memory.

A name she had refused to explain.

And now I understood why.

May you like

Somewhere, there was another little boy named Ethan.

And my wife had known exactly where he was.
