Chapter 4: The Man Waiting Downstairs

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through my ears.

My father was alive.

The man I'd spent twenty-five years believing was buried somewhere along the California coast was standing downstairs in a hospital.

And according to the security officer, he had arrived with a photograph of my fiancé.

"Show me," I said.

The officer glanced at my mother.

"Miss, I need to verify the situation first.""

"That's my father. He's supposedly been dead for twenty-five years. I think I've waited long enough.""

Mom grabbed my wrist.

"Naomi, please.""

I turned toward her.

"Mom, you told me he was dead.""

"I told you what I believed.""

"Then why are you afraid?""

She looked down at the brass key on the floor.

"Because the last time I saw Daniel, he told me that if he ever came back, I should run.""

The security officer exchanged a look with his colleague.

"Ma'am, we'll escort you to a private room while we investigate.""

Mom shook her head.

"No. I need to see him.""

I knelt and picked up the key.

"Then we'll see him together.""

We were taken through a restricted corridor to a small security office near the emergency department.

A uniformed officer stood beside the door.

Inside, a man sat with his hands folded on his knees.

He was older than the man in the photograph. His hair was almost completely gray, his face was lined, and a faint scar crossed his left eyebrow.

But I recognized him.

Not from memory.

From the photographs.

From the yellow raincoat.

From the dreams I'd had as a child.

He stood when we entered.

His eyes moved to my mother first.

"Miriam.""

Mom covered her mouth.

Then he looked at me.

"Naomi.""

I couldn't move.

He took one careful step forward.

"You're beautiful, sweetheart.""

Something inside me broke.

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the small room.

He didn't defend himself.

"Twenty-five years," I whispered.

"Twenty-five years, and that's all you have to say?""

His eyes filled.

"No. It's not.""

"Where were you?""

He lowered his head.

"Trying to keep you alive.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You think that makes this better?""

"No.""

"Do you know how many school events I attended without a father? How many birthdays Mom spent pretending she wasn't crying? How many times I asked her why you didn't want us?""

He closed his eyes.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Mom finally stepped forward.

"Daniel, why now?""

He looked at her.

"Because Richard found the account.""

Mom went pale.

"What account?""

"The one connected to the original ledger.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Explain.""

My father looked at me.

"Richard Cole didn't simply steal money from his company. He used a network of fraudulent contracts to finance illegal property transfers. Some of those properties were purchased through shell companies. Some were used to hide money belonging to people who never agreed to sell.""

"Why would you know that?""

"Because I helped create the accounting system.""

He looked ashamed.

"I thought I was working for an ambitious businessman. Then I discovered the fraud.""

Mom crossed her arms.

"And you disappeared without telling us anything?""

"I was followed. The night I left, two men came to our house. I heard them outside your bedroom.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

"I did.""

Mom shook her head.

"Never.""

"I called the house. Someone answered. It wasn't you.""

He reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

"They told me they had you both. They said if I came back, they would kill Naomi.""

My throat tightened.

"Who told you that?""

"Richard's security chief.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I saw the photographs.""

He placed the paper on the desk.

It was an old photograph of me sleeping in my childhood bedroom.

Taken through the window.

Mom began crying.

I felt sick.

My father continued.

"I went to the police. The first officer I spoke to was already working for Richard. I was arrested on fabricated charges, released, and then attacked outside the courthouse.""

He touched the scar above his eyebrow.

"I escaped. But by then, Richard had convinced everyone I was dead.""

"Why didn't you contact us later?""

He looked at my mother.

"Because every time I got close, someone warned me that Naomi would be hurt.""

I stared at him.

"Then why are you here now?""

His expression changed.

"Because Brandon Cole contacted me.""

The room went silent.

My father looked directly at me.

"He said he was going to marry my daughter.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"What?""

"He claimed he loved you. He said he could arrange a private meeting and help us settle the past.""

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he wanted something.""

"The ledger?""

My father nodded.

"He told me he knew about the safe-deposit box.""

I looked at the brass key in my hand.

"How?""

"Someone accessed the bank records. Richard has been trying to find the original documents for years.""

Mom suddenly spoke.

"Then Brianna didn't steal the envelope because she wanted to read it.""

My father looked at her.

"No. She wanted to see whether Naomi had received the key.""

I remembered Brianna hiding the envelope behind her back.

Her casual smile.

Her refusal to give it back.

The way Brandon had gone pale.

My father continued.

"Brandon told me the wedding was a way to get close to Naomi's inheritance.""

I frowned.

"What inheritance?""

He took a breath.

"Your grandfather left land in your name. A large piece of property in Santa Clara County. Richard tried to acquire it through fraudulent transfers, but the original deed was never properly invalidated.""

I stared at him.

"How much is it worth?""

"Today? Several million dollars.""

Mom looked stunned.

"I thought the property had been sold.""

"It was never legally transferred.""

I felt dizzy.

Brandon had proposed to me three years earlier.

Three years.

He had met my mother, attended birthdays, spent Christmas at our small house, and talked about building a future together.

Had any of it been real?

My father seemed to read my thoughts.

"Naomi, I need you to understand something. I don't know whether Brandon ever loved you. But I know he was sent to find you.""

Before I could respond, the office door opened.

A hospital security supervisor entered.

"Mr. Hayes, there's a problem.""

My father turned.

"What?""

"Your visitor has arrived.""

"Who?""

The supervisor looked toward me.

"Mr. Brandon Cole.""

A cold silence settled over the room.

Then a familiar voice came from the corridor.

"Naomi, sweetheart, we need to talk.""

Brandon appeared in the doorway.

He looked at my father.

Then at my mother.

Then at the key in my hand.

His expression hardened.

"I see you found him.""

My father stepped forward.

"Stay away from my daughter.""

Brandon gave a humorless smile.

"That's funny. You spent twenty-five years doing exactly that.""

May you like

And then he said something that made my mother collapse into the chair.

"Ask him what happened to the real Daniel Hayes.""
