Chapter 6: The Night My Father Fell

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The digital recorder sat between us like a witness.

I looked at Claire.

"You were there?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"The night before he was taken to the hospital.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Why did you tell me he was alone?""

"Because Jordan asked me to.""

Maya looked horrified.

"Why would Jordan ask you to lie about something like that?""

Claire began crying again.

"I don't know how to explain it.""

"Then start at the beginning," I said.

She took a shaky breath.

"Your father called me around eight that evening. He said he needed me to come to the workshop. He sounded frightened.""

"Why didn't he call me?""

"He said he didn't want you involved until he had spoken to Marcus.""

I looked toward the recorder.

"What happened when you arrived?""

Claire stared at the floor.

"Your father was sitting at his workbench. There were papers everywhere. He had the black notebook open, and he was arguing with Jordan.""

Maya's face tightened.

"Jordan was there?""

Claire nodded.

"He was angry. He kept telling your father that the company couldn't survive if he continued investigating the transfers.""

I felt my hands curl into fists.

"What did Dad say?""

Claire closed her eyes.

"He told Jordan that the money wasn't his to take. He said he'd already contacted the bank and requested a full audit.""

"And then?""

"Jordan told him he had no idea what he was doing. He said there were people involved who wouldn't tolerate being exposed.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. Your father asked him the same question.""

Claire wiped her cheeks.

"Jordan refused to answer.""

I paced across the kitchen.

"What happened next?""

"Your father told him to leave. Jordan picked up some papers and started toward the door. But your father stopped him.""

"Why?""

"He said one of the documents was missing.""

I looked at the notebook.

The torn page.

"Was it the missing page?""

"I think so.""

Claire continued.

"Jordan became furious. He accused your father of trying to ruin his life. Then he shoved the papers off the workbench.""

Maya covered her mouth.

"And Grandpa fell?""

Claire nodded.

"He reached for the edge of the workbench. There was a loud crash. He fell backward and hit his head against the concrete floor.""

I felt sick.

"Was he conscious?""

"At first. He told me to call an ambulance.""

"Then why didn't you?""

Claire looked at me.

"Because Jordan said we needed to wait.""

I stepped toward her.

"Wait?""

"He said if the police came, they would find the financial documents and assume your father had been involved in something illegal. He told me we needed to get the papers out first.""

"Your father was lying on the floor!""

"I know!""

Her voice broke.

"I know, Arthur. I know.""

Maya stood up.

"Mom, what did you do?""

Claire looked at her daughter.

"I called an ambulance.""

"How long after he fell?""

Claire hesitated.

"About twenty minutes.""

I felt my heart pounding.

Twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes my father had spent on a concrete floor while his son worried about missing paperwork.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Jordan said your father had suffered a fall. He told me to say he had been alone because he didn't want you to suspect him.""

"And you agreed?""

Claire nodded.

I looked away.

My father had spent his final days trying to protect the family from a betrayal.

And we had protected the person responsible.

The next morning, I called Marcus.

He arrived within an hour.

When I told him about the fall, his face changed.

"Claire was there?""

She nodded.

Marcus sat down slowly.

"Arthur, there's something you need to know.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The night Dad fell, I received a call from him.""

Claire looked up.

"What?""

Marcus took out his phone.

"I saved the voicemail.""

He opened an old recording.

Dad's voice sounded weak and breathless.

"Marcus, it's me. I need you to come to the workshop. Something has happened with the second authorization. I think Jordan has found the original.""

There was a pause.

Then Dad continued.

"Don't come alone. And don't trust anyone who tells you I was by myself tonight.""

The recording ended.

Claire began shaking.

Marcus looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

She couldn't answer.

I stared at my brother.

"Why didn't you come?""

Marcus's eyes filled.

"I did.""

The words hung in the air.

"What?""

"I drove there immediately. But when I arrived, the ambulance had already taken Dad away. Claire was standing outside with Jordan.""

I turned toward my wife.

"Was Marcus there?""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Jordan said Marcus had been threatening Dad. He said if I told you Marcus was there, you would assume he'd caused the fall.""

I looked at my brother.

"Did you speak to Jordan?""

Marcus nodded.

"He told me Dad had fallen while working alone. I knew he was lying because of the voicemail.""

"Then what happened?""

"I demanded to see the documents. Jordan told me there were no documents. We argued, and he called the police.""

I frowned.

"The police?""

"He claimed I was trespassing and threatening him. By the time they arrived, he had already left.""

I rubbed my face.

Everything was beginning to make sense.

Marcus hadn't abandoned our father.

He had been shut out.

And when I accused him of stealing, he had allowed me to believe whatever I wanted rather than reveal something that could expose the entire family.

But one question remained.

"What happened to the second authorization?""

Marcus opened his briefcase.

"I found a copy yesterday.""

He placed a document on the table.

It was dated six days before Dad's fall.

At the top was a reference to a second financial institution.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Jordan.

Daniel Reeves.

And Claire.

But there was another name in the document.

A fourth party listed as the ultimate guarantor.

I leaned closer.

The name was unfamiliar.

"Who is this?""

Marcus shook his head.

"I checked the company registry. It's an offshore holding arrangement. The beneficiary is concealed.""

I looked at the amount.

$610,000.

More than twice the amount we had originally discovered.

"Where did this money come from?""

"Company assets, property deposits, and a loan secured against one of Dad's commercial buildings.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"They used Dad's building as collateral?""

Marcus nodded.

"And there's something worse.""

He turned the document over.

On the reverse was a handwritten note.

If the old man refuses to cooperate, activate Plan B.

I stared at the words.

"Who wrote this?""

Marcus pointed to the bottom corner.

A set of initials.

D.R.

Daniel Reeves.

Maya stepped closer.

"Does that mean Daniel planned everything?""

"Possibly," Marcus replied.

"But I don't think he was the one making the decisions.""

My phone rang.

Jordan.

I answered.

"Dad, we need to talk.""

"About what?""

"About Mom.""

I looked at Claire.

"What about her?""

Jordan lowered his voice.

"She shouldn't have told you about Grandpa's fall.""

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know she told me?""

Silence.

Then Jordan said, "Because I know everything that's happened in that house since Grandpa died.""

I stood up.

"What exactly are you threatening?""

"I'm not threatening anyone. I'm trying to protect you.""

"From whom?""

Jordan sighed.

"From the truth about what happened that night.""

I gripped the phone.

"Your mother says you were there.""

"She doesn't remember everything correctly.""

"Then tell me what she got wrong.""

He hesitated.

Then he said something that made Marcus stand abruptly.

"Grandpa didn't fall because we argued, Dad. He fell because somebody switched his medication.""

I stared at the phone.

"What?""

Jordan continued.

"And before you accuse me, you should know that the person who brought him his medication that night was...""

The call disconnected.

I looked at Claire.

She was trembling.

Marcus picked up the financial documents.

"Arthur, we need to find out what medication your father was taking that night.""

Maya's voice was barely audible.

"Why?""

Marcus looked at us.

"Because if someone deliberately interfered with your father's treatment, this isn't just a financial investigation anymore.""

Then Claire whispered something none of us expected.

"I know who changed his medication.""

I turned toward her.

"Who?""

She looked directly at me.

May you like

And her answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had about my family.

"Your father asked me to do it.""
