Chapter 8: The Nurse Who Switched the Babies

Evelyn Mercer lived in a modest care facility on the outskirts of Columbus, in a room overlooking a courtyard where two elderly men played chess beneath an oak tree.

She was seventy-three, with silver hair, delicate hands, and a face that looked painfully familiar.

Not because she resembled Vanessa.

Because she resembled the woman in the hospital photograph.

The resemblance was so strong that, for a moment, I couldn't speak.

Officer Hayes sat beside me.

A nurse closed the door behind us.

Evelyn looked at the photograph on the table.

Then she looked at me.

“Your father finally told you,” she said.

I leaned forward.

“Tell me what happened.””

She folded her hands.

“Which part?””

“The babies. The birth certificates. The money. Everything.””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Your wife was dying when the babies were born.””

I stiffened.

“My wife?””

“Rebecca Walker. She developed complications during delivery. The doctors believed she might not survive the night.””

I remembered the machines beside Rebecca's bed, the nurses rushing in and out, and the doctor asking me to wait outside while they stabilized her.

I'd been terrified.

I'd been twenty-nine years old and convinced that the world was about to take the woman I loved.

“Rebecca gave birth to a healthy girl,” Evelyn continued.

“But there was another baby born that same night. A girl whose mother had died during childbirth.””

“Who was the mother?””

“My daughter.””

I stared at her.

“You're saying Vanessa was born that night?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Vanessa was my daughter's child. Daniel was her father.””

I felt sick.

“Then why are you talking about two babies?””

“Because Daniel wasn't the only father in that story.””

She reached for the photograph and turned it over.

“Your father was right about one thing. The children were deliberately switched.””

Officer Hayes leaned forward.

“Who switched them?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I did.””

The room seemed to lose its air.

I stood abruptly.

“You switched my daughter?””

Evelyn didn't flinch.

“I switched the babies because I believed I was saving one of them.””

“Which one?””

“Vanessa.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“My daughter was young, unmarried, and dying from complications. Daniel was already involved in criminal activity. I believed Vanessa would grow up in a better home if she were raised by a stable family.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“So you gave her to Rebecca and me.””

“Yes.””

“And you took Nora?””

“No.””

The answer came so quickly that I froze.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Your daughter remained with you. Vanessa was the baby placed in your wife's arms.””

I couldn't breathe.

Officer Hayes glanced at me, then back at Evelyn.

“Are you saying the child Ethan raised as Nora Walker is actually Vanessa Mercer?””

Evelyn nodded.

I stared at the woman across from me.

“No.””

“I know it's difficult.””

“No. You're lying.””

“I wish I were.””

I pushed away from the table.

“Then who is Nora?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Rebecca's biological daughter. The child my daughter should never have been allowed to take.””

My legs felt weak.

For eight years, I'd loved Nora as my own. I'd watched her learn to walk, listened to her first words, and held her through nightmares.

I'd buried Rebecca believing that our daughter was safe.

And now a woman I'd never met was telling me that the little girl upstairs in my house wasn't biologically related to me.

But she was still my daughter.

That truth hadn't changed.

I sat down again.

“Where is Vanessa's biological child?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She was raised by Daniel.””

“Where?””

“Several families helped him hide her identity. He moved frequently. He was afraid your father would discover what happened.””

“Then how did Vanessa end up in my life?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because she eventually learned the truth.””

I looked at Officer Hayes.

He nodded for her to continue.

“When Vanessa was nineteen, Daniel told her that she had been switched at birth. He showed her a copy of the original hospital records. She began searching for the family that had raised her.””

My stomach tightened.

“She knew who I was before we met.””

“Yes.””

“Did she approach me because she wanted to know her biological family?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No. She wanted access to your business.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

“Daniel had spent years trying to recover money he believed your father owed him. He convinced Vanessa that your family had stolen her childhood and that she was entitled to compensation.””

“That's absurd.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you help him?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Because I was afraid of what he'd do if I refused.””

I stared at her.

“What did my father pay you for?””

“To keep the truth from reaching you until he could establish what happened.””

“And you accepted five thousand dollars a month?””

She nodded.

“Your father believed Daniel might attempt to blackmail your family. He wanted me to make sure the children remained safe.””

“Did he know you switched them?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't he expose you?””

“Because he didn't want the children punished for what I'd done. He was trying to find a way to correct the records without destroying their lives.””

I rubbed my face.

My father had spent years paying for a secret he couldn't bring himself to reveal.

But there was still one piece missing.

“Why did Vanessa fake a pregnancy?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“Because she believed marrying you would give her legal access to your assets. She thought she could convince you to add her to the business accounts once you believed you were about to become a father again.””

“And the fake belly?””

“She planned to claim she had suffered a miscarriage after the wedding. She expected you to comfort her, not investigate.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“She thought I'd give her everything.””

“Yes.””

“And Nora?””

Evelyn's expression darkened.

“Vanessa knew Nora had overheard her conversations with Daniel. She threatened the child because she was afraid Nora would expose the scheme.””

I closed my eyes.

I could see Nora standing at the altar with that pin in her trembling hand.

She hadn't been trying to destroy my wedding.

She'd been trying to save me.

“Does Vanessa know you're talking to us?”” I asked.

Evelyn nodded.

“She found out Daniel had disappeared. She'll know the police are searching for the truth.””

Officer Hayes stood.

“We need a formal statement from you, Ms. Mercer. There are also questions about the financial transfers and the original hospital records.””

Evelyn nodded weakly.

Then she looked at me.

“Ethan, there's something else you should know.””

I waited.

“The child you raised as Nora isn't the only person Vanessa has threatened.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Evelyn reached beneath her blanket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a recent photograph of a young woman in her twenties, standing outside a small apartment building.

On the back was an address.

I recognized the street.

It was less than two miles from my house.

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Vanessa found Nora's biological mother three months ago.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn looked directly at me.

“Her name is Claire. She's Rebecca's niece. She was the woman who helped Daniel arrange the original switch.””

I felt the world tilt.

“Rebecca's niece?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was seventeen when the babies were born. She worked at the hospital as a temporary assistant. She helped me change the identification bracelets.””

My throat tightened.

“Why would she do that?””

“Because Daniel promised her money. He told her that if Vanessa grew up in a wealthy family, she'd have opportunities she would never have otherwise.””

“And Claire?””

“She was supposed to take Nora home. But Daniel changed his mind. He wanted both girls separated so neither would discover the truth.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Where is Claire now?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Vanessa has been paying her to stay quiet.””

Officer Hayes took the photograph.

“We'll locate her.””

I stood.

“I want to speak to her.””

“Not alone,” he warned.

“I won't.””

But as we left Evelyn's room, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Nora was sitting at our kitchen table, coloring in a notebook.

The picture had been taken through the window.

Beneath it were six words.

*You have one daughter. Choose carefully.*

I called home immediately.

My mother answered, breathless.

“Ethan?””

“Where's Nora?””

“In the kitchen. Why?””

“Get away from the windows. Lock the doors. Call the police.””

“What happened?””

“Someone is watching the house.””

I heard my mother shout for Ryan.

Then a crash sounded through the phone.

Glass breaking.

May you like

My mother's scream.

And Nora's voice, crying out for me.
