Chapter 8: The Final Warning

Harrison stood outside my front door with Sloan beside him.

Neither of them looked surprised to see Margaret there.

That told me everything.

They knew.

They knew I had found the documents.

They knew the plan was falling apart.

I opened the door but didn’t step aside.

“What do you want?””

Harrison looked at me.

“Mom, we need to talk.””

I looked at Sloan.

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“No?””

“You’ve talked enough.””

Sloan crossed her arms.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s exactly what you said when I started asking questions.””

Harrison looked exhausted.

“Mom, please.””

I stared at him.

“Please what?””

“Please don’t make this worse.””

The words shocked me.

I laughed quietly.

“Make this worse?””

I held up the folder.

“You came into my home.””

I pointed at Harrison.

“You took my money.””

Then I looked at Sloan.

“You planned to take my house.””

Neither denied it.

That hurt more than anything.

Sloan stepped forward.

“You’re being emotional.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“For the first time, I’m thinking clearly.””

Harrison looked at the ground.

“Mom…”

I interrupted him.

“Did you ever plan to tell me the truth?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Sloan sighed.

“This is pointless.””

She reached into her purse.

For a moment, I thought she was leaving.

Instead, she pulled out a folder.

My heart tightened.

“What is that?””

She smiled.

“The paperwork you should have signed weeks ago.””

I stared at her.

“You still brought it?””

“Yes.””

She placed it on the table.

“You don’t understand. This house is too much for you.””

I looked at her.

“My house?””

She nodded.

“You’re older now. You need support.””

The fake concern almost made me angry.

Almost.

Instead, I calmly picked up the folder.

Then I tore it in half.

Sloan’s face changed.

“You just made a mistake.””

“No.””

I dropped the pieces onto the table.

“You did.””

Harrison looked terrified.

“Sloan, stop.””

She turned toward him.

“What?””

For the first time, I saw them disagree.

A crack in their perfect plan.

Harrison looked at me.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He swallowed.

“Sloan didn’t tell me about all of it.””

Sloan’s expression hardened.

“Harrison.””

“No.””

He stepped back.

“I’m done lying.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my son.

“Then tell me the truth.””

He looked at Sloan.

Then back at me.

“She wasn’t planning to just take the house.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Harrison’s face turned pale.

“She wanted control of the trust.””

Margaret immediately stood.

“What trust?””

Harrison looked at me.

“Your husband’s trust.””

I felt a chill.

“She knew about it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Harrison hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“She found out before she married me.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Before she married him.

This was planned from the beginning.

Sloan stepped toward Harrison.

“You’re really going to betray me now?””

He looked at her.

“I’m trying to fix what I did.””

She laughed.

“You think she’ll forgive you?””

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

I didn’t know if I could.

Then Margaret’s phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She looked at me.

Then at Harrison.

“I need everyone to hear this.””

She put the phone on speaker.

A man’s voice came through.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I recognized it immediately.

Daniel.

“I need to tell you something before it’s too late.””

The room went completely silent.

Daniel continued.

“The documents you found are only part of the plan.””

My fingers tightened.

“What else is there?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Harrison wasn’t the person who started this.””

I looked at my son.

Then at Sloan.

May you like

And Daniel’s next words changed everything.

“The person who convinced Sloan to target your family was someone much closer than you think.””
