Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photograph

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Nathaniel stood beside his father's desk, staring at the photograph Marcus had shown him.

His mother.

His wife.

And Adrian Cross.

Three people who had apparently been hiding something from him.

Victoria was the first to move.

“Give me that.””

Nathaniel pulled the photograph away.

“No.””

“It's not what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

Victoria glanced at Marcus, then at me.

“I don't want to discuss private family matters in front of employees.””

Nathaniel let out a humorless laugh.

“Yesterday, you pushed my mother over a railing in front of three hundred wedding guests. I think we've moved beyond private family matters.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“You're making a serious accusation.””

“Then give me a serious explanation.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Adrian contacted me months ago. He said your father had left certain financial arrangements that your mother was deliberately hiding from you. I agreed to meet him because I thought he could help.””

“Help with what?””

“With your inheritance.””

Nathaniel stared at her.

“My inheritance isn't your business.””

“I'm your wife!””

“You've been my wife for less than twenty-four hours.””

Victoria flinched.

I stood near the bookshelves, wishing I could disappear.

Nathaniel turned toward Marcus.

“Call Samuel Whitmore. Tell him I want to meet him today.””

Marcus nodded.

“And locate Adrian Cross. I want to know where he is and whether he's still in the city.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“You can't drag Adrian into this.””

Nathaniel slowly turned.

“Why not?””

“Because he has nothing to do with what happened to Eleanor.””

“Then you won't mind answering a few questions with him present.””

Victoria's expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something beneath her carefully maintained beauty.

Panic.

She reached for Nathaniel's arm.

“Please. We just got married. Don't destroy everything because of one misunderstanding.””

Nathaniel pulled away.

“My mother is in a hospital bed because of you.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears again.

“You don't know that.””

“I know what I saw.””

He looked toward the doorway.

“Marcus, take Mrs. Callaway's wedding guest list and identify everyone who was near the rooftop when this happened. Preserve every recording.””

Victoria immediately protested.

“You can't interrogate our guests!””

“I can investigate an attempted murder.””

The words hung in the air.

Victoria looked at me.

Her expression became cold.

“This is because of her, isn't it?””

I didn't answer.

“You think a servant understands our family? You think she knows anything about money, inheritance, or business?””

Nathaniel stepped between us.

“Rose saved my mother's life. Show her some respect.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Of course. The little heroine.””

Then she walked out.

Her heels struck the hallway floor in sharp, angry beats.

Marcus waited until she disappeared.

“Sir, there's something else.””

Nathaniel looked exhausted.

“What?””

“I reviewed the preliminary security footage from the rooftop.””

“And?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The camera nearest the west railing was disabled for exactly seven minutes.””

Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.

“Who disabled it?””

“Someone used an administrator access card.””

“Whose?””

Marcus looked down at his tablet.

“Mrs. Callaway's.””

I felt a chill travel down my spine.

“That doesn't make sense,” I whispered.

“Mrs. Callaway was already upstairs.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's why I'm concerned.””

Nathaniel took the tablet.

“Could someone have copied her access credentials?””

“Possibly.””

He stared at the screen.

“Find out who.””

Marcus left.

Nathaniel remained standing in the study, holding the photograph.

I approached him carefully.

“Sir, may I ask something?””

He looked at me.

“Go ahead.””

“Why would your mother meet Victoria and Adrian if she already suspected them?””

Nathaniel looked toward his father's photograph.

“Maybe she wanted proof.””

“Or maybe she was trying to warn Victoria.””

He looked back at me.

“What makes you say that?””

I remembered Eleanor's words.

Be careful with people who are too interested in what they stand to inherit.

“Your mother wasn't someone who made accusations without evidence. Maybe she was giving Victoria a chance to tell the truth.””

Nathaniel's expression softened briefly.

“She always believed people deserved one opportunity to do the right thing.””

He sat down behind the desk.

For a moment, he looked less like a billionaire and more like a son who had just realized he didn't know the people closest to him.

Then his phone rang.

Samuel Whitmore.

Nathaniel answered immediately.

“Samuel, I've seen the photograph.””

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Then you know I wasn't exaggerating.””

“Tell me everything.””

“I'll come to the estate, but there's something you need to understand first. Your father created two separate trust accounts.””

Nathaniel frowned.

“Two?””

“Yes. The second was established for a very specific purpose. It was designed to protect the first trust if anyone attempted to gain control through marriage, fraud, or coercion.””

Nathaniel leaned forward.

“Who controls the second trust?””

“Your mother was its protector.””

“Was?””

Samuel paused.

“Someone filed paperwork yesterday morning claiming she had voluntarily resigned.””

Nathaniel stood.

“That's impossible.””

“I agree. But the paperwork carries her signature.””

“Another forgery?””

“That's what I intend to prove.””

Nathaniel looked at me.

Then Samuel said something that made him go completely still.

“There's one more thing. The second trust has a beneficiary you haven't been told about.””

Nathaniel's voice lowered.

“Who?””

Samuel hesitated.

“Your father named someone outside the family.””

“Who?””

“The name is in a sealed document. But according to the instructions, that person must be notified before your thirty-fifth birthday.””

Nathaniel glanced at the calendar on his desk.

Six weeks.

“Samuel, send me the document.””

“I can't. The original is in your mother's possession.””

Nathaniel looked toward the hospital.

“Then we'll get it from her.””

Samuel's voice became urgent.

“There's a problem. Victoria has already requested access to that document.””

Nathaniel's fingers tightened around his phone.

“When?””

“Yesterday morning. Before the wedding.””

I felt my stomach drop.

May you like

Then Samuel added:

“And Nathaniel, if Victoria knows who the second beneficiary is, your mother may have been in danger long before yesterday.””
