Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Smoke
The photograph slipped slightly in my hands.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The church around me faded into a blur of white flowers and frightened faces. All I could see was that old image.
The burned house.
The dark backyard.
The shadow of a person standing near the flames.
Someone I trusted.
Someone close enough to destroy my life.
I looked at my parents.
Neither of them would meet my eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
Because anger was easy.
Betrayal was not.
“Who is it?”” I asked again.
My voice was quieter this time.
Almost a whisper.
My father rubbed his face.
“Lily…”
“No.””
I held up the photograph.
“I am done hearing my name followed by excuses.””
The church went silent.
Emily looked at me with tears running down her face.
For years, she had been the person everyone protected.
But now she looked as lost as I felt.
Noah stepped forward.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I looked at him.
“You should have.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
His eyes moved toward the photograph.
“The person in that picture was your uncle.””
My stomach dropped.
“My uncle?””
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked away.
I searched through my memories.
My father’s younger brother.
Uncle Robert.
The man who used to bring me candy when I was little.
The man who called me his favorite niece.
The man who sat beside my hospital bed after the fire.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Noah looked down.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Noah’s voice was gentle.
“I wish it was.””
My hands started trembling.
Because suddenly, memories I had buried began crawling back.
The smell of smoke.
The sound of footsteps.
A man’s voice.
Not my father’s.
Not Noah’s.
Someone saying:
“Don’t move. Stay down.””
I had always thought it was a firefighter.
But maybe it wasn’t.
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
Noah looked at me.
“Because Robert was trying to hide something.””
My father finally spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was desperate.
“Some things don’t need to be dragged out in front of strangers.””
I looked at him.
“Strangers?””
I pointed around the church.
“You mean the people who know the truth before I did?””
My father had no answer.
Noah continued.
“Robert had been stealing from your grandfather’s business.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
“He knew the family was going to find out.””
My mother whispered,
“He was desperate.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She started crying.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Something?””
My voice rose.
“You knew your own brother was involved, and you let me believe I was just unlucky?””
My mother broke down.
“I didn’t know the fire would happen.””
“But you knew he was there.””
She couldn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Emily stepped forward.
“I remember something.””
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped her tears.
“Before the fire started, Uncle Robert came into the house.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Emily looked ashamed.
“Because he told me not to.””
My heart tightened.
“What did he say?””
She swallowed.
“He said if I told anyone, he would make sure everyone blamed me.””
I looked at Noah.
“So he threatened a child.””
Noah nodded.
“He knew Emily was scared.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“He used her.””
“Yes,” Noah said.
“But he also knew something else.””
I waited.
Noah looked at me.
“He knew Lily would come running if Emily screamed.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I understood.
Robert didn’t just start a fire.
He knew exactly who would enter it.
He knew exactly what kind of person I was.
A person who couldn’t leave someone behind.
My father stepped closer.
“Lily, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“Did Uncle Robert ever apologize?””
My father froze.
That pause told me everything.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Of course not.””
I looked down at my scars.
“Nineteen years.””
My hands moved over the gloves covering my fingers.
“Nineteen years, and everyone had pieces of the truth.””
I looked at Emily.
“You knew about Noah.””
She nodded.
“I was scared.””
I looked at my father.
“You knew about Robert.””
He looked down.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew enough.””
She cried.
Then I looked at Noah.
“And you ran.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Nobody was innocent.
Not even the people who claimed they loved me.
A sudden noise came from outside.
A car door slammed.
Everyone turned.
A church employee hurried inside.
“Excuse me…”
He looked nervous.
“There’s someone outside asking for Lily.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
The man swallowed.
“He said his name is Robert.””
My blood went cold.

After nineteen years…
The person who started the fire had finally come back.
