Chapter 6: The Night Rachel Never Came Home
I didn't remember sitting down.
One moment I was standing in the kitchen, and the next I was staring at the floor with my phone pressed against my ear.
"Say that again.""
Emily was crying now.
"Vanessa was supposed to drive Rachel home from her appointment.""
"Why?""
"Rachel had been feeling dizzy. She didn't want to drive herself.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why was Vanessa with her?""
"She offered to help. She told Rachel she had something important to discuss.""
My mouth went dry.
"What happened?""
"I don't know everything. But I know Rachel called me from the car.""
"Did she say Vanessa was driving?""
"Yes.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Mason was standing there.
He had heard enough to understand that something terrible was happening.
I motioned for him to come downstairs.
He sat beside me.
"Emily, send me everything you have. Every photograph, every document, every recording.""
"I will.""
"And please don't contact Vanessa.""
"Michael, I haven't spoken to her in months.""
I hesitated.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""
Emily's answer was painful.
"Because Rachel made me promise not to tell you until I had proof. She believed Vanessa was manipulating you. And after Rachel died, you were so broken that every time I tried to explain, Vanessa convinced you I was grieving irrationally.""
I remembered the arguments.
Emily calling.
Vanessa crying.
Me choosing the easiest explanation because I couldn't bear another painful possibility.
"I should have listened.""
"Michael, you didn't know.""
"I should have.""
There was a pause.
Then Emily said, "I'm sending you the recording now.""
A few seconds later, a video arrived.
It was short.
Rachel was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car. Her face was pale, and her hands were trembling.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Emily, I don't know if I'm overreacting.""
She took a breath.
"Vanessa keeps asking questions about Lily's inheritance. She says Michael isn't good with money and that someone needs to protect the child.""
Rachel looked toward the driver's seat.
Then she lowered her voice.
"I told her no.""
A door slammed somewhere outside the car.
Rachel flinched.
"She's getting angry because I won't sign the documents.""
The recording ended.
I watched it twice.
Then a second file appeared.
This one was an audio recording.
Rachel's voice came through first.
"Please, Vanessa. I already told you. I'm not signing anything else.""
Vanessa answered.
"You don't understand what I'm trying to do.""
"I understand perfectly.""
"You have a husband who works all the time. You have a little girl who needs someone responsible.""
"Michael is responsible.""
"Michael doesn't even know what's happening in his own house.""
Rachel's voice became sharper.
"Stop talking about my daughter.""
There was a brief silence.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
"Maybe if you weren't so protective, someone else could give Lily the life she deserves.""
I felt my stomach turn.
Rachel replied:
"You're not taking my daughter.""
The recording ended abruptly.
Mason was staring at the phone.
"That's Mom's voice.""
I nodded.
He swallowed.
"She used to say that Lily wasn't supposed to live here forever.""
I turned toward him.
"What do you mean?""
"She said Lily would eventually go somewhere else.""
"Where?""
Mason shook his head.
"I don't know. She said a family would take care of her.""
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Before I could ask anything else, my phone rang.
It was Emily.
"Michael, I found something else.""
"What?""
"Rachel made a written statement to her attorney two days before the accident. She described Vanessa's attempts to obtain access to Lily's trust and requested that the attorney investigate her.""
"Where is the statement?""
"With the original estate documents.""
"Send me a copy.""
"I will. But I need you to understand something. Rachel wasn't just worried about money.""
"What else?""
"She thought Vanessa wanted custody of Lily.""
I looked at Mason.
He had gone pale.
"Why would she want custody?""
Emily hesitated.
"Because Rachel's trust had a condition. If you became unable to care for Lily, the trustee could arrange for her to live with a designated guardian.""
"Who?""
"Rachel's sister. Me.""
I leaned back.
"That doesn't explain Vanessa.""
"Vanessa had been telling people that you were emotionally unstable after Rachel died. She wanted to establish herself as Lily's primary caregiver before anyone questioned her.""
I remembered the months after the accident.
The exhaustion.
The grief.
The nights I couldn't sleep.
Vanessa had taken over almost everything.
She handled Lily's appointments.
She organized the paperwork.
She encouraged me to work longer hours because she said routine would help me recover.
I had thought she was saving me.
Now I wondered whether she had been isolating me.
"Emily, can you come here?""
"Tomorrow morning. I'll bring the original documents.""
I ended the call.
Mason was staring at the floor.
"Dad?""
"Yes, buddy?""
"There's something I need to tell you.""
I put the phone down.
"What is it?""
He rubbed his palms against his jeans.
"Mom told me not to say anything about the night Lily got sick.""
My heart stopped.
"What night?""
"Last month.""
I leaned forward.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
Mason looked toward the hallway.
"Mom gave Lily something from a little bottle. She said it would make her sleep because she was being difficult.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What bottle?""
"I don't know. It was small. White with a pink label.""
"Did Lily take it?""
He nodded.
"After that, she couldn't stay awake.""
I stood abruptly.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Mom said Lily was pretending.""
I took a slow breath.
"Did she get better?""
"She woke up the next morning. But she was really sleepy.""
I immediately contacted Lily's medical team and provided Mason's account, including the description of the bottle. I was told not to administer anything not prescribed to her and to seek urgent evaluation if she showed symptoms again.
Then Mason reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I took this from Mom's bedroom.""
I opened it.
It was a pharmacy receipt.
The purchase date matched the night Mason had described.
The item was a sleep aid.
But the name written beside the purchase wasn't Vanessa's.
It was Rachel's.
I looked at the receipt again.
Then I noticed something handwritten at the bottom.
Same medication as before. Don't let Michael see the bottle.
My hands began shaking.
I called Emily.
She answered immediately.
"Michael?""
"Emily, I need you to listen carefully. I found a pharmacy receipt. It mentions Rachel's name and a medication Vanessa apparently gave Lily.""
There was silence.
Then Emily whispered:
"Oh, God.""
"What?""
"Rachel told me Vanessa had been asking about that exact medication before the accident.""
I looked at the receipt.
"Why?""
Emily's voice broke.
"Because Rachel had been prescribed it temporarily after a medical procedure, and Vanessa knew where she kept it.""
I stared at Mason.
He was crying.
Then my phone vibrated with a new message.
It was from an unknown number.
The message contained a photograph of Lily sleeping in her bed.
Underneath it were eight words.
Stop digging, Michael. You don't know what happened to Rachel.
May you like
And attached to the message was a second photograph.
A picture of Vanessa standing beside Rachel's car on the night of the accident.
