Chapter 1: The Locked Pantry
The sound of my daughter's crying was the first thing I heard when I walked through the front door.
The second was my wife's voice.
"You do not take food from my son.""
I stopped in the entryway, my work bag hanging from one hand.
Lily stood beside the dining table, her tiny fingers wrapped around half a dinner roll. Her cheeks were wet, her shoulders trembling. Across from her, my wife, Vanessa, pointed an accusing finger at her face.
My five-year-old daughter looked impossibly small.
And my stepson, Mason, sat in his chair with a full plate of roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans.
"What is going on?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Lily looked at me, and something in her expression made my stomach tighten.
"Daddy...""
Before she could say anything else, Vanessa snatched the bread from her hand.
"I told you that was Mason's.""
Mason lowered his fork.
"Mom, she can have mine," he said quietly.
"Stay out of this, Mason.""
"But I'm not even hungry.""
"I said stay out of it!""
Vanessa slammed the bread onto Mason's plate.
Lily reached toward the bread basket.
Then it happened.
Vanessa raised her hand and slapped my daughter across the face.
The sound cracked through the dining room.
Lily stumbled backward, bumping into a chair. One hand flew to her cheek while a frightened sob escaped her throat.
"Mom!"" Mason shouted, jumping up.
I dropped my bag.
"What did you just do?""
Vanessa froze.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then she turned toward me with an expression that looked more annoyed than frightened.
"Michael, you're home early.""
I stared at Lily's red cheek.
"Did you just hit my daughter?""
"She was stealing Mason's dinner.""
"She's five years old!""
"Don't raise your voice at me.""
Lily ran toward me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her in my arms. Her little body shook against my chest.
"Daddy, I was just hungry.""
Those five words nearly broke me.
I pulled back enough to examine her face.
"Sweetheart, when did you last eat?""
She looked down.
"Breakfast.""
I blinked.
"What about lunch?""
Vanessa answered before Lily could.
"She had lunch.""
I looked at my wife.
"That's not what I asked.""
"She's being dramatic. She refused to eat what I made.""
"What did you make?""
"Something she didn't like.""
Lily shook her head against my shoulder.
"I asked for a sandwich, Daddy.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"She wanted special treatment. Mason ate what I served him.""
Mason pushed his chair back.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa's head snapped toward him.
"Mason, go upstairs.""
"No.""
The word came out quietly, but it changed the atmosphere in the room.
Vanessa stared at her son.
"What did you say?""
Mason looked at me.
"She didn't refuse lunch, Dad.""
My blood ran cold.
"What do you mean?""
"Mom told Lily she wasn't allowed to eat.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"That's enough.""
Mason swallowed.
"She said Lily had already eaten too much this morning.""
I looked down at my daughter.
Her little hand was still gripping the front of my shirt.
"Is that true, sweetheart?""
Lily nodded.
"She said I wasn't supposed to ask for food.""
I felt something inside me shift.
Not anger alone.
Something colder.
I stood up, keeping Lily behind me.
"Vanessa, explain yourself.""
My wife threw her hands into the air.
"Oh, for heaven's sake! You have no idea how difficult it is to manage two children who have completely different needs.""
"Different needs?""
"Mason is growing. He needs proper meals. Lily is constantly asking for snacks.""
"She's a child!""
"And she's spoiled!""
Mason stepped between the dining table and his mother.
"Mom, stop lying.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Go to your room. Now.""
"No.""
"You're grounded.""
"Fine.""
She pointed toward the stairs.
"Move!""
Mason didn't move.
Instead, he looked at me with tears gathering in his eyes.
"Dad, there's something else.""
I glanced at him.
"What is it?""
He hesitated, looking toward Vanessa.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
"Mason," she warned.
But he continued.
"Mom locks the food in the pantry.""
I followed his gaze.
At the end of the kitchen stood a tall white pantry door. I had never paid much attention to it. Vanessa always handled the groceries and meal planning, and I had trusted her completely.
Now I noticed the silver combination lock hanging from its handle.
I frowned.
"Why is there a lock on the pantry?""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"It's where I keep cleaning supplies and expensive ingredients. It's none of your business.""
"Then why is my daughter afraid to go near it?""
"Michael, you're making a huge deal out of nothing.""
Lily tugged my shirt.
"Daddy?""
I bent down.
"What is it, sweetheart?""
She pointed at the pantry.
"Sometimes she puts my crackers in there.""
Vanessa went pale.
Lily continued in a tiny voice.
"She says I can't have them until Mason finishes his dinner.""
I looked at Mason.
He nodded.
"That's true.""
Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.
"Dad, that's not even the worst thing she does when you're at work.""
I stared at him.
"What do you mean?""
Mason looked toward the staircase.
"Can I show you something?""
Vanessa immediately moved toward him.
"No. You're not showing him anything.""
Mason backed away.
"Mom, you told me you'd never let Dad find out.""
The room went silent.
I stepped between them.
"Find out what?""
Mason's eyes filled with tears.
He looked at Lily, then at me.
"Where she makes Lily stay when she doesn't finish her food.""
Vanessa lunged toward him.
"GET BACK HERE!""
But Mason was already running upstairs.
And for the first time since I married Vanessa, I saw genuine fear in my wife's eyes.

Not fear of losing an argument.
Fear of what her own son was about to reveal.
