Chapter 4: The Man at the Door
The headlights outside our house went dark.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Michael gripped my arm so tightly that his fingernails dug into my skin. His face had gone gray, and sweat glistened along his forehead despite the cold air coming through the open back door.
“Danny,” he whispered, “you have to get Lily out of here.””
I glanced toward the staircase.
“Who is in that SUV?””
Michael swallowed.
“Richard Hale.””
Vanessa's father.
The man who had attended our wedding, toasted our future, and hugged me at Christmas while I thanked him for raising such a wonderful daughter.
The man who had supposedly retired to Florida two years earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told me your father was in Naples.””
“He was.””
“Then what is he doing here?””
She straightened her blouse as if preparing for a dinner party.
“Finishing something that should have been finished a long time ago.””
The casualness of her voice frightened me more than a scream would have.
I moved toward the front window and pulled the curtain aside.
A tall man stepped out of the SUV. His silver hair was neatly combed, and he wore a charcoal overcoat over a dark suit. Even from the window, I recognized his expensive watch and the polished leather shoes I'd bought him for his sixtieth birthday.
He wasn't alone.
A younger man climbed out of the passenger seat carrying a black duffel bag.
Richard looked up at our house.
Then he smiled.
My stomach turned.
“Call the police,” I told Vanessa.
She laughed once.
“You really think that's going to help?””
“There's a man here who imprisoned my brother for seven years.””
“Then call them,” she said.
“Tell them everything. Tell them how you discovered a starving man on your property, how he accused my father of a crime, and how you've spent the evening threatening your wife.””
She reached for her phone.
“By the time they arrive, Richard will have a lawyer here, and Michael will be taken to a psychiatric facility.””
I stared at her.
“You've planned this.””
“I planned for every possibility.””
The front doorbell rang.
Michael flinched so violently that he nearly fell.
I caught him.
“Stay behind me.””
“Danny, you don't understand. Richard doesn't come to negotiate. When he comes himself, it means someone has already made a decision.””
The bell rang again.
Then Richard's voice came through the door.
“Daniel, son! Open up. We need to have a family conversation.””
I almost laughed at the word family.
Instead, I pulled out my phone and started recording.
Vanessa noticed.
“Put that away.””
“No.””
“Daniel, please. Don't make this worse.””
“You had seven years to make it better.””
I walked to the front door but kept the deadbolt engaged.
“Richard, I know Michael is alive.””
Silence.
Then a soft sigh.
“My goodness,” he said.
“That boy always did have a talent for causing trouble.””
I heard Michael make a strangled sound behind me.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
“Of course you are,” Richard replied calmly.
“And what will you tell them? That your wife's mentally disturbed brother has made accusations about a man who hasn't been near him in years?””
“He has injuries consistent with years of abuse.””
“Then take him to a hospital. Have him examined. Let the doctors decide whether his stories are credible.””
The younger man outside shifted the duffel bag from one hand to the other.
I watched him through the narrow glass beside the door.
“What's in the bag?”” I asked.
Richard chuckled.
“Something that belongs to our family.””
I glanced back at Vanessa.
She wasn't looking at me anymore.
She was watching the staircase.
My heart lurched.
“Where's Lily?””
Vanessa said nothing.
I turned toward the stairs.
“Lily!””
No answer.
I ran upstairs two steps at a time and found her bedroom door open. Her pink teddy bear lay on the carpet, but she was gone.
A small window above her desk stood open.
My blood ran cold.
“Lily!””
I rushed to the window and looked down.
Below it, a narrow trellis ran beside the house toward the garden shed. It was just wide enough for a child to climb.
I spun around.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“Where is my daughter?””
She crossed her arms.
“She's safe.””
“Where?””
“She went to get something.””
“What did she get?””
Vanessa's gaze flicked toward the garden.
“The key.””
I grabbed her shoulders.
“You sent an eight-year-old outside while that man is here?””
“Lower your voice.””
“Where is she?””
“Daniel, listen to me. The key opens a room beneath the old Hale property. Your father left something there that Richard needs. Lily has it, and if we let her hand it over, all of this can finally end.””
I released her as if she'd burned me.
“You used our daughter as bait.””
“I gave her a task.””
“You hit her for helping a starving man, then sent her outside to help the people who tortured him?””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“Everything I've done has been to protect this family!””
“No. You've protected yourself.””
A scream came from the garden.
I raced downstairs and burst through the back door.
Richard stood beside the shed, gripping Lily by the upper arm. The younger man had one hand extended toward her.
Lily clutched something in her fist.
“Give it to me, sweetheart,” Richard said gently.
“Grandpa only wants to keep it safe.””
“Let go of me!”” Lily cried.
I ran toward them.
“Get your hands off my daughter!””
Richard turned.
For the first time that evening, his pleasant expression vanished.
“Daniel, don't be foolish.””
I shoved him away from Lily and pulled her against my chest.
The younger man stepped forward.
I pointed my phone at him.
“Touch either of us, and your face goes straight to the police.””
He stopped, glancing at Richard.
Lily was shaking so badly that she could barely breathe.
I wrapped my arms around her.
“I'm here, baby. I've got you.””
She opened her fist.
A small brass key rested in her palm.
“Uncle Michael told me to keep it safe,” she whispered.
“He said Grandpa would try to take it.””
Richard's face darkened.
“Michael has no right to give away property that belongs to me.””
I looked up.
“It's my father's property.””
“Your father is dead, Daniel. Whatever he left behind is a matter for the surviving family.””
“Then we'll let a judge decide.””
Richard smiled again, but this time there was nothing warm in it.
“You sound just like your brother.””
He took a step toward us.
“Michael made the mistake of thinking a few pieces of paper were worth destroying a family over.””
I held Lily tighter.
“And what mistake did you make?””
Richard leaned closer.
“Allowing him to live long enough to tell you about them.””
Behind him, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
She wasn't looking at her father.
She was looking at the key in Lily's hand.
And then she said something that made my heart stop.
“Richard, the records aren't the problem anymore.””
He turned toward her.
“What do you mean?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Michael told Daniel who ordered the abduction.””
Richard's face went utterly still.
For a moment, the garden was silent except for the wind moving through the bare branches.
Then Richard looked at me.
“You see, Daniel,” he said softly, “this is why you should have stayed in Chicago.””
He reached inside his coat.
Michael's warning echoed through my head.
When he comes himself, it means someone has already made a decision.
I shoved Lily behind me.
Richard pulled out a folded document rather than a weapon.
He held it up between two fingers.
“Before you call anyone,” he said, “you should read what your father signed three days before he died.””
I stared at the paper.
At the bottom was my father's signature.
May you like
And directly beneath it was the name of the man who had inherited control of our company.
Richard Hale.
