Chapter 4: The Two-Million-Dollar Secret
Richard Whitmore stared at the document as though the paper itself had betrayed him.
“That is a preliminary transaction,” he said finally.
“It has absolutely nothing to do with this family situation.””
Margaret Lewis remained seated, her hands folded neatly over the leather folder.
“Then you should have no difficulty explaining it.””
Richard snatched the page from the table.
“The funds were transferred for legitimate business purposes.””
“Which business purposes?”” my father asked.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“I don't answer to you.””
“No,” Daniel Hayes replied.
“You answer to your shareholders, your lenders, and the contractual obligations you voluntarily accepted. I'm simply asking a question.””
I stood beside my father, holding Sophie against my shoulder. Lily slept in his arms, blissfully unaware that the adults around her were tearing apart the world I had tried so hard to build.
Ryan looked as if he might be sick.
“Dad, you told me the company wasn't making payments to Vanessa.””
Richard spun toward him.
“Because it wasn't your concern.””
“She's my intern!””
“And you're my son. I don't expect you to understand every financial decision I make.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“I'm the executive vice president. You expect me to sign off on every expansion, every acquisition, every payroll adjustment. But somehow, I wasn't supposed to know about two million dollars going to a woman I've been sleeping with?””
Vanessa's name had barely left his mouth before he realized what he'd admitted.
Richard looked at him with open disgust.
“You have managed to turn a private indiscretion into a public catastrophe.””
“Me?”” Ryan demanded.
“You're the one who paid her!””
“Lower your voice.””
“No. Tell me why.””
My father shifted Lily gently in his arms.
“Margaret, is the receiving account connected to any other company?””
“Yes,” she replied.
“The beneficiary company is registered in Delaware. Vanessa Cole is listed as its sole member, but the available records suggest that the entity has conducted very little independent business.””
“Meaning it's a shell company?”” I asked.
“Potentially,” Margaret said.
“We need more documentation before reaching that conclusion.””
Richard seized the opportunity.
“Exactly. Potentially. You have no proof of wrongdoing.””
My father nodded.
“That's why we're asking questions rather than making accusations.””
For a moment, Richard looked relieved.
Then Margaret turned another page.
“The payment was divided into four transfers over six weeks. Each was recorded as a consulting expense. However, the company has not produced any invoices or deliverables supporting those payments.””
Ryan stared at his father.
“You paid her half a million dollars at a time?””
Richard's face darkened.
“Do not speak to me like that.””
“Did you know she and I were involved?””
Richard said nothing.
Ryan took a step closer.
“Dad. Did you know?””
Richard adjusted his cufflinks, buying himself a few seconds.
“I knew you were spending time with her.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
“You have always been careless with women, Ryan. I assumed you would eventually get bored and move on.””
The words struck harder than a confession.
Ryan looked at Vanessa's empty chair.
“So you knew.””
Richard's voice became colder.
“I knew you were making a mistake. I was attempting to manage the situation before it damaged the family.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“You paid a young woman to keep her quiet?””
Richard turned toward me.
“Don't be ridiculous.””
“Then what was the money for?””
“Business.””
“What business?””
His lips pressed together.
For the first time, I understood why my father had asked him to explain the transaction in front of witnesses. Richard was accustomed to controlling conversations by deciding which questions were permitted. Every time someone challenged him, he tried to turn the challenge into an act of disrespect.
He had no answer for a simple question.
Ryan rubbed his face.
“I'm going to call Vanessa.””
“Don't you dare,” Richard snapped.
Ryan pulled out his phone.
“Why? Afraid she'll tell me something you don't want me to hear?””
“I'm telling you to put that phone away.””
Ryan ignored him and called.
The line rang four times before Vanessa answered.
“What do you want?”” she asked sharply.
“Vanessa, I need you to explain something. Did my father transfer two million dollars to a company in your name?””
Silence.
Then she said, “Where did you hear that?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“It's true?””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“Margaret has the documents. We know about the transfers.””
Another pause.
When Vanessa spoke again, her voice had changed.
“Ryan, I was told it was a consulting arrangement.””
“What consulting arrangement?””
“You need to talk to your father.””
“I am asking you.””
“And I'm telling you that I signed what they gave me. I didn't design the arrangement.””
Richard reached for the phone.
Ryan stepped away.
“Who gave you the money?”” he demanded.
“Your father did.””
“Why?””
Vanessa exhaled shakily.
“He said it was compensation for helping him with a confidential project. He told me that if anyone asked, I should say I was providing market research.””
Richard's face had gone rigid.
“What project?”” Ryan asked.
“I don't know all the details.””
“Vanessa, two million dollars isn't a casual consulting fee.””
“I know that now!””
Her voice cracked.
For the first time, she sounded frightened rather than smug.
“Ryan, he told me the arrangement was legal. He said I would be protected as long as I followed instructions.””
“Protected from what?””
“I don't know.””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He told me not to discuss the payments with you. He said you weren't supposed to know.””
Ryan stared at his father.
Richard looked away.
That small movement said more than any confession.
“Vanessa,” Ryan said quietly, “did he ask you to do anything else?””
She began to cry.
“He asked me to sign some documents. I didn't understand them. He said they were routine acknowledgments.””
“What documents?””
“I don't have them anymore. His office kept the originals.””
Margaret leaned forward.
“Vanessa, this is Margaret Lewis, counsel for Hayes Capital. Please don't destroy any records or delete any communications relating to these transactions. You should seek independent legal advice before answering further questions.””
Vanessa sniffed.
“Am I in trouble?””
“We cannot determine that from the information available. But you should preserve your records and obtain your own counsel.””
The call ended a moment later.
Ryan lowered his phone.
His face had lost all color.
“Dad, what did you do?””
Richard stood abruptly.
“This conversation is over.””
“No,” Ryan said.
“It isn't.””
“You are my son. I have spent my entire life protecting you.””
“From what?””
Richard's eyes flashed.
“From women like her. From people who want to use our family. From the consequences of your own stupidity.””
Ryan pointed at the folder.
“You paid her two million dollars, and you expect me to believe you were protecting me?””
“I was protecting this company.””
“Then why did you hide it?””
Richard said nothing.
My father finally placed Lily in my arms.
“Richard, I suggest you cooperate with the review. My company will not make assumptions about the purpose of those transfers. But the documents will be examined, and any contractual remedies will be pursued through the proper channels.””
Richard's hands curled into fists.
“You think you can destroy me with paperwork?””
“No,” my father replied.
“Your paperwork will either clear you or reveal what happened. That's entirely up to the facts.””
Richard turned to me.
“You should be careful about the company you keep, Emily. Your father may appear generous today, but powerful men always have their own interests.””
I held his gaze.
“My father never threatened to make me homeless because I disappointed him.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Don't be naïve.””
“I was naïve. I thought a man who loved his son would respect his son's wife. I thought a grandfather would be happy to see his grandchildren. And I thought my husband would choose his family over his pride.””
Ryan flinched.
I continued before either man could interrupt.
“I was wrong about all three.””
My father placed a protective hand on my shoulder.
“Let's go, sweetheart.””
This time, Richard didn't try to stop us.
He was too busy staring at the documents that might expose whatever he had been hiding.
As we approached the exit, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
*Emily, you need to know what Ryan's father was planning before you leave town. I have proof, but I can't trust anyone in that family.*
A second message followed.
*Meet me alone. There's something about your daughters that you don't know.*
I stopped walking.
My father noticed immediately.
“What is it?””
I looked at the screen again.
The sender had included a photograph.
It showed Richard standing outside a hospital room three months earlier, on the day my daughters were born.
May you like
Beside him stood a woman I had never seen before.
And in her hands was a folder bearing my full name.
